Hallo Erik,
check your Makefile. The path used in the default was different to my
installed Samba. (SuSE 6.0)
I changed the entrys for
prefix=/usr
BASEDIR=/usr
SBINDIR=${exec_prefix}/sbin
LIBDIR=/etc
VARDIR=/var
PRIVATEDIR=/etc
SWATDIR=/usr/swat
LOCKDIR=/var/lock
Then I called make and make install. After restarting the damon everything
works fine with my
Distribution.

I have this problem with Samba. It won't start. I've updated it like
described: (after unpacking with tar I did: "./configure";"make" and "make
install")
Everything went well in my opinion.
But...., when I reboot my system Samba 2.0.3 will not show up. Only the
old Samba does.
I had a complete Samba system running before I updated.
So, whats the problem here. Can anyone help me?

Also, take a look at rc.serial (Slackware at least) I just got a Digiboard
working, and found many useful examples in the rc.serial file (which is
disabled in rc.S by default)

Hi
I have got a 100MBit network card. I tried to install it with the
Tulip and the Realtek driver, but it doesn't work.
I have got two computers directly connected together with an crossed
cable. I gave one the IP 192.168.0.1 and the otherone 192.168.0.2.
The card will be installed at boottime, with the correct interrupt and
base adress. Telnet says that there is no network accessible.
Does anybody know where I can find the necessary software or the
necessary hint?

I currently have internet access provided via cable modem using dhcp to
allocate the address. Originally when the 2.2.+ kernels came out, I tried
compiling a new kernel. I upgraded my dhcpcd, initscripts, and the rest, but
I'm still having problems with dhcpcd failing everytime. I'm currently back
to using the 2.0.36 kernels which work without issue. I'm not sure where to
begin my troubleshooting for this issue, and I'm wondering where some good
resources for dhcp would be. RFC's, etc. A coworker of mine with a fresh
redhat 5.2 install had the same problem, while mine is a hacked up redhat
5.1. My ISP is less than enthusiastic about helping me out with an
unsupported OS, so I'm hoping anyone can provide hints. Let me repeat again,
that I have upgraded my dhcpcd client to the proper version, and it still
does not work. How do I go about troubleshooting the negotiation between
myself and my ISP.
I'd appreciate any help with this.
Thanks,
Brian Seppanen

Ok, I'm trying to install NIS on a Sun Solaris 5.6 box that will serve
several Linux boxes. I downloaded the ypserv-1.3.6(which I assume will work
on the sun box?). Everything seems to work well yet when I type a command

Domain not bound.
My ypserv outputs:
ypproc_domain_nonack("<nis.domain>") [From: <Solaris box IP>:32771 ]
refused connect from <solaris box IP>
---> Ignored (not a valid source host)
ypbind doesn't even let me do a debug.
Not sure what is going on here, any help is greatly appreciated.

Dwayne;
Your NIC must be properly recognized by the hardware driver before any other
set-up can happen. That is why you are getting the various error messages
when trying to configure the interface.
I believe the Tulip driver is the correct on. The problem seems to be that
you have specified the I/O address wrong in the /etc/confg.modules.
You did the correct thing by going to /proc/pci to see where the card
is being placed by the bios. (I/O = 0xfc00) All you need to do is place this
in the I/O section of the config.modules and you should be set.

Hi,
One thing you might try is "xhost +" instead of with the machine name.
That should allow any client to connect from any host. I'm not sure if
it'll work but you should definitely try it.

Subject: Network Domain Problem
I need help with a weird problem I am having concerning the /ect/hosts
file. I use RH5.2 for my home lan with three computers attached to the
lan. If I enter the linux machine's local assigned IP and name in the
/etc/hosts file, then all my Win98 computers can login to the server.
However, if I connect the linux machine to my ISP when it's address is
in the /etc/hosts file, then ifconfig will report my inet addr as the
locally assigned IP instead of the dynamic address that is assigned by
my ISP.
If I remove the linux machine entry from the /etc/hosts file, and then
connect to my ISP, the inet addr is assigned correctly. However, none
of the Win98 machines on my lan can connect to the linux server, they
get the 'No domain server found' error.
I just discovered that if I put the linux machine's address back in the
/etc/hosts file AFTER I connect to it to the ISP, then the computers on
my lan are once again able to login it to the linux machine over the
lan.
The only change I have made on my system that was running great before
is to switch from an internal 56k modem to an external ISDN TA. Nothing
else has changed from my working environment.
So what am I doing wrong?

after compiling a new kernel I get the following error on boot:
Apr 26 12:08:16 linuxdb1 modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-4
Apr 26 12:08:16 linuxdb1 modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-5
I assume that this means it can't find the proper module but I am pretty
sure that I did the kernel upgrade correctly:
make config
(chose most settings as modules so that I could get a zImage instead of
bzImage)
make dep
make zImage
make modules
make modules_install
I copied the zImage that was in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot to /boot
made an entry in lilo config for the new kernel (left old one in place
just in case)
rebooted
always get that error.
I even made a kernel with that stuff compiled in (bzImage)
I still get that error. I really need to get my system to route
correctly :)
Any ideas?

When compiling dhcpcd-1.3.17-pl5, a bug in the last stable release of egcs make
the binary unable to connect to your ISP (it causes an error in checksums). So
you have 2 solutions (i prefer the second:))
1. Use the binary provided in dhcpcd-1.3.17.pl5.tar.gz
2. Remove the optimizations -O2 in the Makefile and recompile dhcpcd.
If should fix your problem...

You can check the file /etc/ftpusers and delete the entry for root although
that is not

You probably don't want to do this: it allows any client to connect
from any host. That means that, if I was feeling generous, I could go
off and xlock your display (with my password) because I felt like it.
I could do other worse things if I were feeling less generous. You
probably want to use some variant of xauth, or perhaps ssh; see the
Remote-X-Apps mini-HOWTO for more details.

Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 21:29:20 +0100
Hi,
I'm running SUsE Linux 6.0. My internet connection is dial-in using
ppp/chap. Wu.ftpd is configured as described in the man pages and I've
triple-checked the permissions and file setups. I have the -a switch set
in the conf file so I'm using /etc/ftpaccess. My /etc/hosts.allow is set
up to allow wu.ftpd: ALL.
I can get an anonymous login on my local machine but ls doesn't display
any files; nlist on the other hand displays everything correctly. If I
login as a "real" user e.g. root, still no file display using ls - nlist
displays the files correctly.
The same applies with test anonymous users who have tried to access the
ftp on the internet.
If I login from a Sun workstation on my local lan (using SunOS 4.1.2) I
can get an anonymous ftp in which ls displays all the files correctly.
I've been over this a hundred times but I can't figure out what is wrong.
Can someone please give me a pointer? I'm not using firewalling or IP
masquerading.

Subject: re-export with knfsd?
Date: 26 Apr 1999 13:56:49 -0700
The userspace nfsd has the option re-export that lets you export your NFS
mounted filesystems to other computers. For convoluted reasons, I need to
do this. I.e., Computer A exports a filesystem to Computer B. Computer B
then needs to re-export this filesystem to computer C. Computer C mounts it
from Computer B, but all three computers end up reading from and writing to
the same physical disk.
Unfortunately, the userspace nsfd also crashes frequently when Solaris
machines try to access the NFS exported partitions.
I solved the latter problem by going to the knfsd in 2.2.6-ac1. However, I
can't figure out how to do the re-exporting with knfsd. It's not documented
anywhere that I can find.
Can anybody offer any suggestions?
Thank you,
