HELP: Cannot ping between Win98 box and Redhat 5.1 server. ("Dennis L. Droba")

Subject: Help enabling IPPortFW with 2.0.36 kernel
Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 12:36:34 +0100
I've got a Redhat 5.2 machine, with the linux 2.0.36 kernel, I install
the VPN Masq patch from:
ftp://ftp.rubyriver.com/pub/jhardin/masquerade/ip_masq_vpn.html
I then install the IPPortFW patch, at:
http://www.ox.compsoc.org.uk/~steve/portforwarding.html
Part of the second patch then fails (as expected) - because the first
patch alters the config file. I merge this portion of the patch into the
net/ipv4/Config.in file manually, and run a "make config"
Sure enough, I am given the options for IPAUTOFW and IPPORTFW, and I
answer yes. The .config file has these set to the correct value. I
compile and install the kernel and reboot.
However, the /proc/net/ip_portfw and ip_autofw files are not present -
the kernel does not seem to be paying attention to these options. What
is the problem? Masquearading works absolutely fine, ipfwadm and such,
IP forwarding. But, I can't seem to get IPPORTFW and IPAUTOFW to work.
The compile gives no errors.
If anyone knows how to get this to work I'd be very grateful. I *don't*
have the option of using the 2.2 kernel series either I'm afraid...
Could any responses be CC'ed to me, as my server is a quick expirer.
Thanks in advance.

Well.... I need help to to smthing with Samba !
Let me explain... Ive two servers : one NT and one Linux... Each servers
control one domain :
==> NT server MYNT : control DOM1
==> Lin. server MYLIN : control DOM2
when I configure smb.conf like other classics smb.conf files, I can see
my server on network
explorer on my NT workstation named NTWKS (global network ==> two
domains DOM1 and
DOM2 and when I clic on DOM2, I can see MYLIN and I can connect and see
shared directories)
Ok but now I want to switch NTWKS from DOM1 to DOM2, ssssoooo I go to
network config in
control panel and clic on domain radio button and type DOM2 and I see a
message like :
be sure your computer has an account on this domain (Im french, so Ive
french message but it's
smthing like that) but Ive created an account for NTWKS on MYLIN with
adduser NTWKS$ and smbpasswd -a -m NTWKS.... ?!?!?
And I see on my log file :
[1999/04/27 15:17:28, 5] passdb/smbpass.c:getsmbfilepwent(258)
getsmbfilepwent: returning passwd entry for user NTWKS$, uid 506

So what happend ?????
At last, I want to add DOM2 in the login NT Box to let users choose

Not required. His problem was that his DENY-all rule preceeded his
logging rule.
But CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL_NETLINK would let you do more advanced, funky
logging,

Subject: I've got the modem blues...
Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 17:30:40 GMT
Hi there,
For some reason I cannot get Linux to see that I have modem on COM3
(which is where old Windows 95 says it is). It did work in Linux, but
due to reasons I won't go into - I had to reinstall Linux.
When I attach my friends external modem to COM1, the external modem
works so I know that I _can_ dial out.
When I run isapnp I get the following:
Board 1 has Identity 3f 10 30 28 09 11 00 72 56: USR0011 Serial No
271591433 [checksum 3f]
My modem is a USR Robotics Sportster therefore I'm assuming that the
'USR0011' means that its found the modem.
If I try and run pppd, I find in /var/log/messages the following:
Apr 27 18:02:05 localhost pppd[618]: tcgetattr: Input/output error(5)
Apr 27 18:02:06 localhost pppd[618]: Exit.
What does that mean?!? I tried the man page to tcgetattr() but it
doesn't tell me what the error message means!
Please help - then I can stop using Windows!!
TIA,
Oliver B. Tupman.

I need some advice on mounting a UNIX filesystem on a LINUX machine.
The network administrator thinks that it is okay to use Samba to mount
the files on the Linux machine. I have read that there are problems with
(i) Uppercase and lowercase filenames (ii) User/Group IDs. The
alternative is to mount using NFS but the administrator will not let me
do this for security reasons. Has anyone successfully used smbmount to
mount UNIX files?

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have an account from an ISP which is behind a firewall. In windows
I can setup proxy in all applications such as MIRC, ICQ, Netscape, ..., but
in linux I can only access our local ISP and not any other address.
In linux I can only use netscape because it has a part that I can set the
proxy in edit--> preferences part. In windows I have setup a programm named
Winsock 2.2 , so I don't need to set proxy in any application and all the
applications I run in windows use the proxy setting in the configuration file
of winsock. here is the configuration in winsock file:
DIRECT 195.96.147.0 255.255.255.0SOCKD5 @=proxy.safineh.net 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
And when I want I set it manually like this:proxy.safineh.net : 8080
How can I use these proxy setting in linux?

Do you have a default route set to the ppp0 interface?
route add default ppp0
Actually, I don't think it has been beat to death. There is an actual sparsity
of real world example rule sets for ipfwadm. Now that ipchains is in the lead,
I hope more example crop up.
You can also try specifying the full word 'masquerade', as in the man page. I
have heard this work, but the standard syntax of the HOWTO has always worked for
me.

I'm sure there is any easy way to do this, I just don't know it.
In a nutshell, Linux machine with 3 ethernet devices, eth0 - 2.
eth0 goes to our standard LAN, eth1 and eth2 are connected to a private
LAN.
eth1 is 192.168.1.10, eth2 is 192.168.2.10.
I write a standard networking application that creates two sockets.
One binds to the eth1 ip addr, the other to the eth2 ip addr.
when I send out on one socket, I expect it to go out eth1 and in eth2.
It appears on lo, which is not what I want.
Thanks
Joe

Hi all.
1. Could somenbody tell me what'll happen if I send packets to my linux
router box using one of the IP address used for "the not directly connected
interface" ?
Ooups, not very clear. I try again :
system1-------if1-ROUTER-if2-----------system2.
What happens if I send data to the router from system1 using if2's IP address
?
2. Is there a way (on the router) to determine which interface an IP packet
comes from ?
Thanks

Hi Gurus,
I have spent quite a lot of time already trying to set-up a ppp connection
on my linux box.
As I have shed a considerable amount of my hair in the process without any
success, I would be grateful
if one of you could just have a look at my config file and debug log below
and even tell me
what is wrong, THAT would be really great. I must mention that I have done
extensive reading
of all the accessible WEB resources on the subject before coming to this
newsgroup, and I
am (almost) confident this is not one of the common ppp pitfalls.
>From what I understood of the debug stuff, ppp insist on requesting pap
authentification from
the server, even though I specified noauth in the option file. How so??!!!
There are also a couple
of LCP ConfRej at the beginning that may have confused the server, but how
can I avoid these?
Thanks for your time,
LMN.

Subject: HELP: Cannot ping between Win98 box and Redhat 5.1 server.
Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 16:42:10 -0500
I'am new to Linux and trying to network between my Win98 PC and my Linux PC.
My Win 98 box has a PCI Fast Ethernet DCI 21143 card, and my Linux box a
3COM 3C509B-TPO card. I am able to ping to each card on both PCs but I
can't ping between computers.
What have I done wrong???
Thanks in advance for your help.
