Subject: ppp dial out through a modem pool/terminal server
Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 14:32:01 GMT
I am currently trying to find some info on the following:
My company has a modem pool (3Com HiPer Arc) where you can telnet to a
certain port and issue AT modem commands. Once I dial, I get a terminal on a
remote system. What I would like to be able to do is to use this for dial
out ppp service (basically, use the linux box to ppp dial out through the
modem pool). The problem is, I need that to show up as a /dev/xxx entry, for
pppd to take over (as far as I can tell). I have been researching several
how-to's and other docs, and see some vague references to doing something
like a "reverse telnet" and various other possibilities, however, I have seen
nothing concrete. I have also been researching other modem pool type
products, and some seem to come with software for this, however, the 3Com
does not. I have read the 3Com docs, and they state that I should simply
"install a pseudo-tty driver to make the modem appear as a local modem",
however, I don't know what I need to do in order to do that. Any help is
greatly appreciated, as are repies directly to me as well as to here

Subject: APC Smart-UPS 420 and Linux
Date: 26 Apr 1999 17:57:19 GMT
Hello,
I've been trying to get an APC Smart-UPS 420 to work with Linux (Slackware,
libc5, 2.0.36 kernel) but to no avail. apcupsd 3.5.8 (compiled source)
keeps saying 'PANIC: cannot talk to UPS'. Same thing with the 3.5.6 binary.
Does anyone have an apcupsd.conf for this UPS? I'm under the impression
there's something wrong with the serial port (Asus P5A-B mobo) because my
USR 56K modem seemed 'dead' on /dev/ttyS0, not even responding to a simple
AT command. With an apcupsd.conf from a fellow Smart-UPS 420 user I can
rule out any problem on the software side.
Please mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] as well as posting to this newsgroup.

This message appers in /var/log/messages when i try to use my new 56k
modem. i edited my ppp-on script to use the new connect speed (and the
new phone number). It turns out, actually, that 115200 (28.8 X 4) is the
highest value that doesn't produce this error. How can I find the speed
at which I am transfering data? Can I just ignore this message?
It does feel like a 28.8 connection, but it's been one day, and I
haven't guaged the general vagaries of net congestion yet.

Hello Mike, thanks for the response. Okay, I only have one zone (i.e.,
deathstar.net). My whole network is isolated (i.e., not connected to the
Internet). The files on my primary DNS server (RedHat 5.2 PC) are
located in the /var/named directory. The files that the secondary DNS
server are trying to download are: "db.deathstar" and "db.10.1". My IP
address on my primary server is 10.1.2.1 and the secondary is 10.1.2.2.
My subnet mask is: 255.255.0.0.
All seems fine except that the secondary server can't get the files
(i.e., "db.deathstar" and "db.10.1") when named starts up. I've read the
manuals and nothing seems to explain how to setup permissions so that
the secondary server can read and download from the primary. Thus, I
keep getting a "permission denied" statement from the secondary server
when it tries to download the files.
So, one primary DNS server (named 8.x) and one secondary DNS server
(named 4.9.x) on a flat (i.e., non-routed) isolated network.

Daniel,
I don't know if I can help you but I will give you some advise and input.
You are masquerading under linux and I take it that you are using ipfwadm to
do this. If so you have to go to metalab.unc.edu and read their HOWTOs on
ipfwadm and firewalls. Also there is some good links to this issue on
www.linuxapps.com under the networking and security section. Also I play
starcraft too and its main protocal for LANs is IPX/SPX. If you are using it
this way you have to install the modules for IPX support and Appletalk (you
can see this message come up at boot time). Let me know how it works, and if
you have any other input or questions you can reach me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Linux kernal is 2.2.1. My old pppd is 2.2.0. I heard that pppd 2.2.0 doesn't
work under kernal 2.2.1, so I download the 2.3.6 version PPPD. After compile
and install, when I try to run "pppd" to connect to my ISP, the error
message is:
pppd: peer authentication required but no suitable secret(s) found
pppd: for authentication any peer to us(ABCD)
"ABCD" is my username for connect to my ISP.
My ISP uses "PAP authentication". And I did add correct content in
"pap-secret" file.
So what's wrong? Any idea?
Help me out!! Thanks a lot!!

David,
WOW! It looks like you have some problems. Well if you can afford it,
I would suggest reinstalling linux. If you can't afford to do this, I
would suggest installing all fo the libXXXX etc libraries. It looks to me
that you are having some dependency problems. Since you don't have any
control panel to work with you will have to install the libraries by hand.
Here is how to do it if you dont know how.
1. put you cd into your drive and mount it with mount -t iso9660
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
You have a SCSI cdrom you will have to type mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0
/mnt/cdrom
2. change you directory to /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS
3. list the contents but go one page at a time with ls | more
4. scroll down untill you see the lib packages and intall them with
rpm -ivh libXXX etc
Hope you can fix it. Sorry that I was not much help but I have never seen
this problem before.

It might be a variation of this, too.
For example, many places use either a public or private list of
IP addresses that are dialups. SMTP connections from these addresses
are disallowed. As was pointed out, this is a way that the problem
of junk email is being attacked.
Then, there are other possibilities.
The best best is to ask GULF.NET why specifically these messages
are being rejected. We get requests like this every so often
(although we try to keep this down with SMTP errors messages that
are more informative than "access denied"). GULF.NET is the proper
place to address your question because it is (judging from
your message) pompano.pcola.gulf.net that is rejecting the SMTP
traffic.
Most likely, they'll be happy to explain why (although you should
be ready for a suggestion that you change ISPs). If it does turn
out to be that GULF.NET rejects connections from dialups, then the
solution is to (as others have pointed out) pass all your SMTP
traffic via Earthlink's servers. This actually has other advantages
for you as well, so it's a good idea regardless of the problem
with GULF.NET.

Clair,
If you want to dual boot a machine you have to intall NT first and then
Linux. When install linux, at the end of the install it will ask you if you
have any other OSs you would like to boot to from lilo (Linux Loader), say yes
and select the partitions that have NT on them and give them a name like
windowsNT. I take it that you are using redhat because in versions 5.1 and
newer they have a program called diskdruid to install linux. Let me know how it
goes.

Matt,
You have to add the parameter -o to the ipchains lines. This will logg all of
the data hitting your firewall. This parameter is for ipfwadm but should still
work in ipchains. If you type man ipchains at the termial you should see a
parameter similar to -o . If so this will put everything into the directory
/var/log in the files messages and secure. Hope I was of help.

You have to make a script file and put all of thes settings into it
and have it run at boot time. See the HOWTO pages at metalab.unc.edu.
