Do you have a transfers-allowed statement in either of the affected zones?
If so, you will need to add the ip address of your slave server.

I've got another one to add:
9) Are you running on a valid DNS?
I have an isolated "simulation internet" running in my bedroom and I have
found that samba has some identity problems without valid DNS to help out.

May I respectfully suggest that you buy a copy of "DNS and BIND", by
Paul Albitz & Cricket Liu, published by O'Reilly, Third Edition,
Copyright 1998.

Just follow chapter four. It's easy, and the book is quite intuitive.

That's what I did. It works. If you order the book from Amazon you can
have it by Tuesday <smile>.

"DNS and BIND", and another O'Reilly book, "Sendmail", are like bibles
here.

The speeds you're refering to have no real relation at all to the modem
speed, except that if you set this speed lower than your modem speed, you
can have problems. The speed you're talking about is the rate that data
is transfered between the modem and the machine (aka, it's the speed of
the serial port). 115200 should be plenty for a 56k modem, especially
since many serial ports can't go higher than that (as yours apparently
can't).

I might be able to help you here...
The PCI autoprobe cannot detect your card because the base address for the
card is out of NE2000 autoprobe range. I found my RTL-8029 based 10Base-T
adapter/hub living at address 6500h by default. Go into your
/etc/rc.d/rc.modules file with your favorite text editor and add the line:

/sbin/modprobe ne io=0x6500 #RTL-8029 based PCI NE2000 compat. REALTEK
network card

Everything after the "#" sign is optional, but it serves as a good reminder
as to what the line is for. Good Luck!

I work on both Unix and NT servers, there is no way that an NT can compete with a
Unix server. Also, the reason there is so much said about uptime is that Joe User
can log on to the computer, but he can't delete or execute files that he should
not. Unix systems ususally go down because of either hardware or someone with
"root" access did somthing stupid.

Hi Patrick,

This is because the Linux kernel module for the 3c905 family (which also
does the 3c590 family)[1] for some reason doesn't bother trying to do
100Mbps. It assumes you want 10Mbps, unless you manually intervene and
give it a module option to change that behaviour.

I have 3C905B-TX cards in 4 machines, three of which run Linux (to
varying degrees), and it took me a while to find out why it was only
doing 10Mbps. The following URL gave me the answer:

   http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html

The answer is to add "options=4" to the options for the 3c59x module.
This can be shown by pasting in the relevant portion[2] of my
/etc/conf.modules file:

alias eth0 3c59x
options 3c59x options=4

You probably already have the first of those 2 lines in your
/etc/conf.modules. If you add the second line, you should get 100Mbps
next time you reboot the linux box!

Regards,
sj

[1] It's the 3c59x module.
[2] Ok, so that's all there is in /etc/conf.modules ;-)

Date: Sun, 02 May 1999 18:17:25 GMT

Hi Guys

I have a Linux box running as a Sendmail / Pop3 Server which I also want to
use as a firewall, using the TIS Firewall Toolkit.

I realise that Sendmail is one of the most common hacking entry points into a
system. However I cannot motivate another machine for use as the mail server
/ firewall.

I have installed the Firewall toolkit and read in the documentation
Overview.ps that Smap and smapd can be used to implement SMTP to insulate a
notoriously buggy program which is often used to break into systems, since
Sendmail runs wih system level permissions. Apparently smap & smapd is
invoked instead of sendmail etc, after the initial connection the rest of the
mail processing is done by sendmail.

Can anyone tell me how to implement this - Please?

Also what other services/ports should I block.

The machine may require remote admin - could I install some sort of SSH
daemon to allow this?

Thanks all
Rick

You're requiring that the peer (ISP) authenticate itself to you and aren't
set up for it in the secrets file. The ISP probably wouldn't do it anyway.
Remove the +pap or require-pap pppd option and the problem should go
away. Read "man pppd" about require-pap, +pap is an obsolete equivalent
that may still be supported but not in the man pages.

You might do yourself a favor by getting ppp-2.3.7, the latest version.
The ppp-2.3.6 version was only out a couple of months when ppp-2.3.7
appeared.

Remove the default route you have to your LAN and configure a network

be only one active default route and pppd won't replace an existing
default route with one of it's own through the ppp interface, even with

Dunno what pppd does when you set a speed it's not able to handle.
You could ask it for 230400 but you very likely have a 16550A UART which
has a top speed of 115200 and asking pppd for anything more than this
is asking for trouble. Where did the rule of 4 come from anyway?

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Chuck Shimada)
Subject: Route lost 2.0.35 Slackware
Date: Sun, 2 May 1999 18:43:01 GMT

I am currently have a strange problem on the 2.0.35 networking stuff.
I have two system on a 486 the other is a Pentum. I have loaded
Slackware 3.6 from an InfoMagic cd set on both machines. The 486
has 16mb, scsi 1gb disk, scsi cdrom, adaptec 152x controler, 2 SMC
elite 16 nics (wd chipset). The other machine has IDE drives
and a simillar SMC nic card. I loaded both machines from the CD
using the appropriate boot floppy for each configuration and the
color.gz root disk. There were no errors during loading. I am
setting these machines up as IP-Masq. Firewalls.

The 486 is setup with IP_alias and IP_masq. I have eth0 set to
an 209.xx.xx.99 address with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.240. I
have eth0:0 set to an 172.xx.xx.1 address with a subnet mask of
255.255.0.0. The Pentum is set up almost the same except that
the eth0 address is 209.xx.xx.110 and the eth0:0 address is
172.xx.xx.170. The default gateway on both machines is set
to 209.xx.xx.97.

What happend is after a while, any where between 5 min. to 30 min., the
Pentium loses it ability to talk to any thing on the 209.xx.xx subnet.
Pings fail. Some times both subnets are unreachable. Rebooting the
system corrects the problem, sometimes doing a route -v command clears
the problem up. Other times the route -v hangs. Redoing the ifconfig
commands and route command does fix the problem. Having to do that every
5 min. is not acceptable. The problem seems to correct its self after
a few minutes. This does not help if you are ftping a large file and
we do.

The 486 is more stable, but it still fails but after a longer period of
time and seems to correct its self faster.

I have tried installing Redhat 5.2 from CD and have see the same problems,
only they occure faster. I have only done this to the Pentum.

If I try to compile the kernel and modules to add the nic drivers into the
kernel. The make go with out any aborts that I can detect. But when I
reboot, depmod tells me I have missing symboles in modules. I would normaly
not be too woried but on of the modules was in IPv4 ipip. And the problem
got worse, the systems could not talk to anything on either subnet.
Yes, I did this on both the 486 and the Pentium. Redhat gave me similar
modules errors after recompling the kernal.

I don't understand what is failing or why. I realy don't know how I could
be getting the unresolved externial in the modules after a clean compile for
source code supplied on the cd with the images.

I would like to use the Pentium as the firewall the 486 is in use just
because it seem to be working better than the pentium.

The pentium was inuse before a firewall running 2.0.33 kernel with a ne2000
generic card. It was changed to the SMC card because no one remember how
it was configured and no one remember the root password. So a newer
version was installed over the top with the SMC nic.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be greatful. I have trying to get
this resolved over the past two weekends and I need a second option.

Mean while, I am planning to try to switch the address of eth0:0 and eth0.
I will also try changing the subnet mask on 255.255.255.240 to 255.255.255.0
(ok so I would see broadcast after). I will also try recompiling 2.0.36,
2.0.33 and 2.0.29.

And if I can figure out how, I wil try install RedHat 6.1 from the FTP site.
I am told it can be done.

Once again any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Oh ya, I do have several other system at different sites doing the same
things I am trying with the Pentium. They work but they are on older
kernals. At this point, I don't care what kernal I use so long as it
works. But I don't believe that there is a inherent problem with the
2.0.35 kernal. But I also don't know why this are failing. It is difficult
for me to believe that two sets of hardware are both failing, but stranger
thing can happen.

Any help would be greatly appericated.

How can I ping one machine from the other?

You could try fooling your pppd into thinking that the port runs 115200
whil it is in fact running much faster.

Hi folks,

I've got Red Hat 5.2 w/ kernel 2.0.36 running as a gateway/router using
ipmasq[1] to connect my LAN to the 'net using PPP. Pretty much
everything seems to work fine[2]. The one odd thing is that while I can
traceroute from other boxes on the network, traceroute on the gateway
machine itself to somewhere outside, e.g. www.yahoo.com gives a result
like this:

[sj@heinlein - ~]$ traceroute www.yahoo.com
traceroute: Warning: www.yahoo.com has multiple addresses; using
204.71.200.68
traceroute: Warning: Multiple interfaces found; using 10.0.0.1 @ eth0
traceroute to www.yahoo.com (204.71.200.68), 30 hops max, 40 byte
packets
 1 * * *
 2 * * *
 3 * * *
 4 * * *
 ...

...which is plainly ridiculous. It's trying to go out eth0 instead of
ppp0[3].

I have the following lines perhaps somewhat hackily placed in
/etc/rc.d/rc.local:

# Set up IP Masquerading
ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 10.0.0.0/8 -D 0.0.0.0/0

This seems to do all I need in general.

What am I missing here? There has to be something. =)

Regards,
sj

[1] Running lots of other services -- httpd, squid, nntpcached, smb,
named, etc., etc. -- but that's beside the point.
[2] Except ftp from machines other than the gateway box, and it seems
that's something I may be able to sort out with the appropriate module.
[3] Last time I looked, I didn't have a massive web directory server
anywhere in my house. ;-)

I use WINNS for my nt4-samba-network. my sambamachine is also winns-
server (a samba-feature). this also will reduce networktraffic (someone
said in faq)
