Subject: Trouble connecting to ISP using PPP
Date: Mon, 03 May 1999 00:03:02 +0000

I'm having establishing a connection with my ISP using PPP. I can make
the connection, but my modem keeps hanging up on me, and I'm not sure
why. The problem seems to have something to do with PAP
authentication. Here is the output from pppd. I was hoping someone can
shed some light on this for me. Note: I've changed my userid and
password in the following logfile to USERID and PASSWD. Those are not
the actual entries.

TIA,
Aaron Ginn

Subject: Cannot connect with PPP to BSDI
Date: Sat, 01 May 1999 20:15:33 +0000

Hi,

First, I am running RH51 with PPP-3.5.2 and 2.0.29, 34, 35, 36,
and Suse 6.0. The modem is a Sportster 28.8 Fax Voice internal.

I just subscribed to a new ISP and I cannot connect to them through PPP.
Here is an (edited) excerpt from /var/log/messages:

If I connect to my old provider (via long distance) or to the same new
provider but a different number (it doesn't write which OS, maybe not
BSDI) then I can see the starting 7E sequence of the incoming frame. I
looked up RFC1662 which states the following:

Flag Sequence

Each frame begins and ends with a Flag Sequence, which is the
binary sequence 01111110 (hexadecimal 0x7e). All implementations
continuously check for this flag, which is used for frame
   synchronization.

Only one Flag Sequence is required between two frames. Two
consecutive Flag Sequences constitute an empty frame, which is
silently discarded, and not counted as a FCS error.

What can I do? I cannot connect to them. Go to another provider? The
book
"PPP Design and Debugging" by James Carlson states on p12-13

As transmitted, an example PPP frame ...
   ...
The initial 7E is optional here, but decent implementations will
send it if the previous frame is not immediately back-to-back with
    this frame.

I do not get the starting 7E on the initial frame. Does it mean that the
BSDI implementation of PPP is "not decent"? I cannot believe this.

If anyone can help me please also send a private mail to
mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] since right now I have internet only long
distance and I do not want to browse the newsgroups.

Thanks for your time, Vilmos Soti

We have the same problem on a Novell network. It is a bug in Access where
the database was created without setting up the users on the access machine.
We tried using Novell rights to the file but even 2 people with full access
could not open it at once. We had to recreate the database in Access with
the proper names of the users and their rights and privileges embedded in
the file.

That was just us but you may want to look into the same area for linux too.
Especially if other Samba files can be open simultainiously with no problem.

Two different protocols - check ipfwadm script - you provided no details.

Hi,

I'm looking for a X-mailclient and a X-newsclient. The only problem is: They
have to support a proxy server (Wingate 3.0) on an NT4 server. I can use
Netscape, but I want another program.

Any1??

Are you running routed? It doesn't sound like you need it if it is, and it
could
cause the problem you're seeing. Does your route table change when the
failure happens? netstat -nr

Are the modules missing have to do with net-pf-3, net-pf-4, or net-pf-5?
Then add the following to your /etc/conf.modules file:
      alias net-pf-3 off # Forget AX.25
alias net-pf-4 off # Forget IPX
alias net-pf-5 off # Forget AppleTalk
However, this probably has nothing to do with the problems you're having.

Assuming both are 10Mb Ethernet why not get a hub that has both RJ45 and
COAX, or a simple transceiver to act as a bridge?

I think you'll need to install a SOCKS server on your firewall machine and
have the application behind the firewall open a socks port. There may be
other ways to do this but this is all I can think of at the moment :)

Masquerading uses ports above 61000. Is it just that these are reserved
for use by masquerading?

Subject: help-Packet collision problems.
Date: Mon, 3 May 1999 08:41:44 -0300

I got a problem of packet collisions to and from a linux box. Maybe someone
knows where the best place to start looking is.

When I send files to or from the linux box the collision light on the ACER
509u hub lights up with each packet and the transfers are very slow. I can
send files from win-win with no problem. The internet works fine in all
ways.

network with 5 win95/98 and 1 linux samba file/ip masq internet server for
lan Cat5 cable, hub and RJ-45 connections.

Linux box:
slakware 3.5
network Ne 2000 OK
IP masq
masq_ftp (tried with this off)
masq_real audio (tried with this off)
samba with shared access

5 windows machines all with acer aln-201 PCI all working OK
Frame = auto
tcp/ip and compatible IPX installed
gateway=linux box
dns=ISP numbers

Is there a possibility of frame types mismatching? Where is this set in
linux?

Where is a program to better list / check this on the linux box?

The linux ne2000 card is ISA. Does anybody know if I can drop an ACER PCI
ALN 201 into the box (it is pci)? I do not see it supported by default.

Any general help would be great.

Could I have more detailed information about the netflex card
setup ?
I had a hard time to make linux(slackware4.0) understand
my NIC (netflex-3p) in compaq DeskPro6000.
Thanks.

Does anyone know where I would find any Alpha/Beta/Release drivers for

I've got that ethernet card working, and for me there are two options;
disable PnP with software that comes with the card (or can be downloaded
from 3Com) and compile support into the kernel, or compile support into a
module, initialize the card with isapnp, and call the module SPECIFYING THE
IRQ. There's a little blurb buried in the driver docs mentioning that it
doesn't always autodetect the card resources if it's a module - but no
problem if it's in the kernel.

My experience was that when the card didn't work there were no error
messages, but it was like the card (or a cable) wasn't there. I've got a
crossover cable though, and no hub so I don't know if there was the type of
activity you describe.

Subject: samba not seen in Network Neighborhood
Date: 3 May 1999 11:05:31 GMT

A newbie with common problem.....

I can ping either machine but I cannot access or see the linux(RH 5.0)
server from
Win 95 machine (I don't know how or if I can 'see' the win 95 machine from
Linux). I am new to Linux and Networking and I'm a bit stuck. I get this
message when i log onto windows: "No domain server was available to
validate your password. You may not be able to gain access to some network
resources".

smbstaus output reads:

samba version 1.9.17p4
service uid gid pid machine

no locked files

I have not been able to set the domain up and the machine is
[root@localhost /root]#.

/etc/hosts output reads:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain
192.168.1.254 harry.lightfoot.com *Linux box*
192.168.1.2 mollie.lightfoot.com *win 95*

I can telnet to the IP address 192.168.1.254 but not the domain
'harry.lightfoot.com.

smbclient //harry/root -U root output reads:

added interface ip=127.0.0.1 bcast=127.255.255.255 nmask=255.0.0.0
unknown socket option tcp_nodelay
server time 'etc'
timezone 'etc'
password:
Domain=[WORKGROUP] OS=[UNIX] Server=[Samba 1.9.17p4]
security=user
smb:\>

My guess, for what it's worth, is that the Domain/DNS need(s) to be set up
somewhere.

Any ideas?
