Subject: Valid IP addresses for home network
Date: Mon, 03 May 1999 18:52:43 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have one question before I dig in and start configuring my home network.
What is considered a safe IP address for a private home network, w/ one
machine intermittently connecting to the internet to download news and mail?
I intend to use all the goodies eventually, i.e. ip masquerading, etc for the
other machines, but I need a valid IP address( I figured a Class C would be a
good place to start, but one of the online documents got me wondering) to
start configuration, preferably one that won't cause conflicts w/ the outside
world.
Please respond via email as well as to the group.
Thank you,
Monte

Can anyone point me in the right direction on this.
I just installed Mandrake 5.3 on an Intergraph dual 300Mhz P2.
It has an etherexpress pro/100B adapter.
The ethernet card passes all the self test during boot up, but reports this
error:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource temporarily unavailable.
I get the same error when I try to activate the card in netcfg.

Subject: DHCPD & Routing NT boxen to their controllers
Date: 3 May 1999 06:10:24 -0700
Got a strange problem I can't figure out the solution to:
I've got a Linux box set up to provide DHCP services for guest laptops
connecting at our location. When those guests are using Windows 9x machines,
they have no trouble hooking up to and seeing everything they're supposed to,
including the NT-based networks.
However, when they bring up a NT-based machine, NT *cannot* seem to find the
proper domain controllers (or ?) to get logged into their NT-domain. The 9x
machines have no troubles at all. TCP/IP *is* working on the NT machines, I've
checked it. That much it's letting it see.
Do I need to somehow configure DHCP to give the addresses of the NT domain
controllers? WINS machines? Is this somehow tied w/ Samba? (Also installed, but
running just for our location's LAN)

You compile nis-utils with glibc 2.0 header files. You need glibc 2.1
for NIS+.

Subject: Secure PPP login?
Date: Mon, 03 May 1999 16:00:54 GMT
Hi. I am trying to make a special PPP login script that prompts for Username
and Password (the password always changes). I know the Minicom way of logging
in and such, but it can be a real hassle, esp for our Xwindows users having
to switch back and forth. Anyone have an example script that does about the
same thing?
This is about what I am looking for:
====================================
Script name: secure-ppp
Start Script.
Dial Secure PPP number...
Prompt for Username...
Prompt for Password...
Wait for 'Prompt>'
Do 'ppp' command...
End Script.
The password ALWAYS changes (uses a special character, randomized number
sequence via SecureID card), so that is why the prompt is needed. The username
prompt is optional, but would be a plus for multiple computer users, etc.

sending AT-commands and sending the output from the modem to the screen.
Is there a way of doing this without using a terminal program (like
minicom)? Some weird combination of cat and pipes maybe?
Any help sent as email to

is greatly appreciated
Have a nice day,

Subject: TCP attack or wrapper problem?
Date: Mon, 03 May 1999 14:08:20 GMT
I have these entries in my /var/log/secure logfile. Im running RH5.2 with
the latest RPMS from RedHat. I've heard that this can be a portscan from
outside to see what ports are hot or an attack otherwise. I have wrapper
service as tight as can be... Why am I not getting the IP address?
If this is an attack, what have I left open? /etc/hosts.allow only allows
three hosts from my internal network, /etc/hosts.deny is ALL : ALL, and I'm
only using the bare minimum services--telnet and pop3; finger, ftp, are not
started.
Since this server has been compromised in the past, I'm worried about this
pattern. I have done a clean install of RH so there's nothing left from the
attack.

card in it. If so, then you have one of 3 general types:
IPX/SPX for Netware
IPX/IP with DLC support
IPX/IP with DLC/LPD support
If it is one of the first two, then you are probably barking up a tree.
If, as I suspect, it is the third option, then you set it up as served
by a UNIX server.
If you could transcribe a self test from this printer where it refers to
its networking and mail it to me (I assume that the rest of this NG don't
want to know about it) I will try and help you get it set up.

My guess is that the kernel picked up the wrong interrupt for your card.
You might try something like the following in your /etc/conf.modules file:
options eth0 io=0x300 irq=11
alias eth0 3c509
Although for my 509 card , no options were needed. Did you turn off PnP,
with the DOS based config software that came with the card?

So, I joined that newsgroup.

??? PPP requires a clear text channel to send data over. no such channel
exists for ethernet, though you could it over an IP session. what could
this be for?

Here's the ifconfig results for ppp0:
ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
inet addr:63.10.32.216 P-t-P:63.10.33.0 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:9 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:11 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0
Memory:e44038-e44c04
I can't ping anything except the ip i'm assigned, but it pings at 0 ms
so I know it's not going through the net. So, for some reason I get a
real ip but I'm not really on the net. I do have my isps dns servers
set up. On a side note, if I get a connection above 33600 my modem
stops responding and the "connection" is aborted. Any suggestions?
