Upgrade to 6.0 or at least 5.2, now. Don't waste your precious time with
patching versions that are old enough to have kernel and security problems
that are long fixed. Then read my notes at

I am using Calderas OpenLINUX 2.2 and I see that I have a number of gettys
running. What file do they read for configuration? Is it the
/etc/gettydefs. It is not there.

Any good docs on the getty process and its config file would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Date: Thu, 06 May 1999 21:13:53 GMT

Hi,

I'm setting up fax services on my Linux box. (RH 5.1/Sparc). Has anybody
had success in setting up a Windoze NT system as a client to use the fax
"printer" remotely? I know that you can get to the fax process via
Samba, but how would you pass the fax number to the fax system from NT?

Has anybody solved this yet?

Hi Ian:

Actually, I'll have to side with Jen on this one. I couldn't get my bash to
work with

rm "-filename"

either. What shell were you using? I tried both bash and tcsh, neither would
work with a command like this, at least, not in my hands.

Sorry,

I was working from memory. I'm at work and I don't have a Linux box here.
Quoting or escaping are the usual methods of dealing with these things.

I've just tried it on a SGI IRIX box and by using the escape \ I could
create and remove the $filename version.

However, the -filename version gave me a bit more trouble until I tried
this:-

touch ./-filename - Which created the file happily
rm ./-filename - Which removed the file happily

rm doesn't like a filename with a - in front so I used a pathname (in this
case ./) in front to keep it happy.

Ian.

Hi Jen:

Yes, these wierdly named files are hard to deal with using bash. You can
either write a C routine using unlink, then supply this program with the
wierd name and unlink will do the rest. (Actually, I checked this call from
Fortran, but I assume it is calling the same system service to delete the
file as it would be from C.)

If you don't want to go to the trouble of writing your own routine, you can
also use emacs.

In emacs, do a "dired" on the directory containing the wierdly named file.
You do this by typing "^X-d" and then entering the directory name followed by
return. Move the cursor to the line containing the wierd filename (either my
clicking on it with the mouse or using the 'up' and 'down' keys until the
cursor is on the proper line. Type a "d" and you should see a 'D' appear at
the far lefthand side of the line containing the wierd filename. This 'D'
means the file is marked for deletion. Then type an "x", at the bottom of the
emacs window you should see "Delete 'wierd filename' (yes or no)", type yes,
and emacs will respond "1 deletion done" and the file should have disappeared
from the dired window. I believe this 'emacs way' is again just calling the
same system service that your own unlink program would have called. It works,
I just successfully tried it on the file called "-filename".

Good luck,
Nick Bourbaki

P.S. I hope you don't mind my "emacs" explanation, but I thought I should give
complete instructions. I apologize if you are already an emacs user.

P.P.S. I'm certain there are numerous other ways to delete these wierdly named
files, say from Perl, or probably even from bash ...

I figured out what my problem was...

I needed to use a FQDN instead of an IP address. In other words, my exports

/home/ftp/pub/rh5.2 host.lfcomputers.com(ro,no_root_squash)

WHY couldn't I find this in the documentation?

Oh well.

I realize this is off topic and also posted in another group but I
need your help.

Hi. My name is Jon Neal. I am an undergraduate at the University of
North Texas and I'm taking a client/server class. I have been offered
the opportunity of gaining a full letter grade if I can get 6
participants in an Internet survey. This will be used for my
professor's Doctorial Thesis.

I need people who have worked on information systems projects that are
near completion or have been completed within the last year. Both of
the surveys must be completed for each systems project.

Survey #1 assesses the process used to implement the project from an
IT development perspective
Survey #2 assesses the success of the project implementation from a
user's perspective.

Both surveys are accessible from the Internet and do not take long to
complete. They are mostly radio button responses.

In order to receive credit for this I must e-mail my professor stating
the company and project name along with both completed surveys. (When
you click the submit button at the bottom of the survey it is sent to
my professor I e-mail him the project subject you have worked on and
the company you did this for.) I have to have this done by no latter
than 5:00pm Tuesday (5/11)

Please e-mail me if you are willing to help with the project you
worked on and the company. I can then send you the URL's of the
Surveys and send my professor the necessary information as well.

I know this is off topic but I figured you might be able to help my
cause. Thanks again.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Neal

Hey there,

You should have about 6 different consoles to work from... try using the F1,
F2, F3, F4, F5, F6 keys... (you must hold down CTRL and ALT while pressing
each one) This should take you from console to console. It's rudimentary,
but it is useful.

For this, you should be able to do the following:

man PROGRAM > /path/to/outputfile
lpr /path/to/outputfile

It worked for me... I just printed up the man pages for mount.

> 4. Using X Windows and Linux to print to a Windows 9X/NT printer

What do you mean by a Windows 9X/NT printer? You should be able to print to
any networked printer by adding the printer's name or IP addr to your
/etc/printcap file. There is great documentation on how to do so in a book
call Using Linux. It is published by QUE (http://www.quecorp.com). There are
also a number of O'Reilly books that could help you, Running Linux (supposed
to be a great starters book), Essential System Administration.....

This should be easy... get a telnet client (one should come with windows... if
not, HyperTerminal is a good one for free) and open up a connection to your
linux box.

The BASIC for the Enterprise Elan (later, Enterprise Flan) also had

The login option is sometimes used for authenticating a call-in with
PAP in addition to or in lieu of a secret in pap-secrets. It's *not*
appropriate for calling out to the ISP.

: This is my /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file:
: edgarc * ^secret@

A strange way to represent the secret. I take it you don't really enclose
the secret in ^ @ .

This is odd. You ask for asyncmap 0x0 here yet in the options file the
asyncmap 0xa0000 is given ??

: pppd[695]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x17 <asyncmap 0xa0000> <auth pap> <magic

Here is what causes the failure. The ISP asks for PAP authentication and
pppd refuses (ConfRej). This usually means that you have the pppd option
-pap that explicitly tells pppd not to authenticate to the peer with PAP
or there is no pap-secrets file or are no lines in the pap-secret file.

You don't show how pppd is started so pppd may have a -pap as an argument
but *something* is preventing pppd from trying to authenticate with PAP.

Please find out about unix2dos and convert the messages from the log
file to DOS format before posting from the dark side. Then they don't
glob into a great ball that's hard to read.

In the setting of a small LAN (5 to 10 workstations) does Linux make
Netware moot, or do they work together?

Can a DOS database application running under Netware be run successfully
under Linux if the engine has not been ported to Linux?

TIA for any observations, advice or opinions.

Linux can do all the file sharing work that Netware can do, and printer
sharing. Linux can also do Intenet access (all users through the one modem),
email serving and sending, and a few other bits. NetWare may be able to do
those as well, but Linux does the whole lot for free.

If it is a database like Access or FoxPro that simply use the file server as
a storage area and don't actually run any processes on the server such as
NLMs then, Yes it will work. If it does have a component the runs on the
server itself, then it may be a problem. There are databases available for
Linux such as Oracle, Informix, Sybase and it even comes with a free one
called Postgres

For an operation of that size, Linux is a very good choice.

Hello all.

I ended up with a filename called "-filename". Since it has a "-" on it, I
can't rm the darn thing, or mv or anything! I also have one that starts with
a "$" which I ended up with while I was fooling with Perl scripts. How can I
delete these files?

Thanks! Jen H.

I also have mediaone, and it works fine and dandy wow that tech was an ass.
I e-mail a tech before and he told me yes and he helped me a little but on
his private account. Its easy not big problem just have DNS client running
and your set.
