Impossible to know, as there is nothing that points back in this case.

Hi,

I'm having trouble negotiating ppp with an ISP. My Linux system is
trying to be the client.

Here's the relevant part of the debuging info:

sent [CCP ConfReq id=0x1 <deflate 15> <deflate(old#) 15> <bsd v1 15>]
rcvd [IPCP ConfReq id=0x1 <compress VJ 0f 01> <addr 195.197.0.195>]
sent [IPCP ConfAck id=0x1 <compress VJ 0f 01> <addr 195.197.0.195>]

... so at this point the local IP address has been negotiated
successfuly ...
... then the ISP sent a compression request which the local ppd rejected

rcvd [CCP ConfReq id=0x1 < 11 06 00 01 01 03>]
sent [CCP ConfRej id=0x1 < 11 06 00 01 01 03>]
rcvd [IPCP ConfNak id=0x1 <addr 195.197.4.251>]

... it seems that the ISP then said "well in that case I don't like your
address either ...
... and so the local ppd requested the address again

sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x2 <addr 195.197.4.251> <compress VJ 0f 01>]
rcvd [CCP ConfRej id=0x1 <deflate 15> <deflate(old#) 15> <bsd v1 15>]
sent [CCP ConfReq id=0x2]
rcvd [IPCP ConfAck id=0x2 <addr 195.197.4.251> <compress VJ 0f 01>]

... but it seems that the ISP got really stubborn.

sent [IPCP TermReq id=0x3 "Interface configuration failed"]

..............................
The problem seems to be the
rcvd [CCP ConfReq id=0x1 < 11 06 00 01 01 03>]
... which was rejected by my local pppd.

What should I do?

I'm using ppp 2.3.3 on kernel 2.1.109 with kernel modules activated.
The ppp modules and compression modules are loaded in the correct order.

Is the modem getting reset to a proper state after each call. You
say that it works once after a reboot and then won't connect. Make
sure that you are using a proper initialization string.

Also, there is a version of 0.16.5 of diald. I would get it and try
that. I know a couple of later versions have come out within the
last few months but I could not get them to compile on my Slackware
system with a 2.0.36 kernel.

Does anyone have experience downloading email from the demon POP3
mailserver?

When I do it, using fetchmail, its does download email; however
unfortunately sendmail is running as well and some of the messages get
downloaded by SMTP -- Demon recognises this and sends an email telling
me.

I've tried not running sendmail, but this is no good because it causes
fetchmail to stop working too (fetchmail tries to deliver its mail to
sendmail). There's nothing in the Demon section of the fetchmail FAQ,
either.

I'm running SuSE6.0, if that's any help.

If SMTP is working, why worry about using POP3?

You will need to prevent sendmail from getting the mail from Demon.
Sendmail can use TCP wrappers to control connections, not done it so
I can't help you. The Linux firewall can be used to prevent connections
from external machines (you are running a firewall, aren't you?).

I find the same thing, but I use fetchmail only when the punts are refusing
to disgorge. In that case I don't get the emails from demon, although they
don't do any harm in any case; you just delete them.

Two choices
1) Have sendmail only accept connections from 127.0.0.1. e.g. using
ipfwadm/ipchains.
2) There is an option to turn of SMTP delivery on the configuation
webpage

I suggest using the ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) drivers.
Your SB 128 will only barely work with the included OSS/LITE drivers in
the first place (I find that the DMA keeps getting messed up and the
sound that's playing suddenly turns into scratches and hisses).

Try http://www.alsa-project.org . Works great with my ESS1371-based card!

If are trying to use modules, as opossed to compiling support into the kernel
itself then
this is incorrect.

You cannot pass options to a module using LILO. Period.

This misinformation seems to propegated here quite regularly. If you are using
modules
you need to make the appropriate entry in /etc/conf.modules. For example:

===========/etc/conf.modules=================
alias eth0 3c503
options 3c503 0x300,5
========================================

alias eth0 ne
alias eth1 ne
options ne 0x300,0x320,10,5

This is from memory but should be close. I also seem to recall that there were
probablems using two ne2000's. I have never used two ne2000's. But this does
work using 3c503, 3c509's etc etc. The BNC port can also be selected this way
as well by using two additional args. 0=TP 1=BNC . IIRC

Now if support is compiled into the kernel for ne2000's then this append =
stuff will work.

Subject: network init on linux?
Date: Sat, 08 May 1999 08:27:52 -0400

hello,
I have a linux box (p133, 16m memory, 2-3c503 nics, kernel 2.0.34)
that I am using for a firewall/nat and connecting between
a home lan and mediaone.

I have noticed some strange initializationbehavior that I'd like to
confirm with other users.

Sometimes the ethernet cards/routing is not configured correctly.

It used to be that the nic card that was connected to mediaone
did not always configure properly. I noticed that "ifconfig"
did not always display the missing nic. I usually enter
"route add ..." and the card shows up and routing works.
The command is in the .../rc.inet1 file but sometimes it
seems that the command does not get executed properly.

The rc.inet1 file does have the command to invoke the dhcp client
before the ifconfig or route commands.

I installed a "sleep 10" command to make sure that the
dhcp command was started and executing before the ifconfig
and routing commands. That seems to have allowed the mediaone
connection to be reliable.

Then I noticed that the home lan nic is not always ifconfiged to the
linux box. Executing the "ifconfig ...." command that is in the
rc.inet1 file usually corrects the problem.

Is there some proper order or timing of commands that must be
observed when using dhcp? Is this a situation that is
common knowledge when using 2 nics?

I have the impression/feeling that the linux networking is not reliable.
I don't really believe this impression as so many folks
are successfully using linux to satisfy all sorts of network
requirements.

Does anyone have the same experience.

I hoped to have a "headless" linux box be my firewall that is
turned on when the cable modem is powered up. Obviously
I would telnet and halt the linux box before removing power.
Since the net is not alway reliably initialized, I have a terminal
connected to verify that both nics and routing is running correctly.

I have noted that once things run correctly, they are up to stay.
I would like to eliminate the questionable initialization.

Any hints or pointers.

I have NIS running on my server and every time I have to add someone in

NIS.

Is there any other way to tell NIS to create the account without running
make. Is it possible to run some "nisuseradd" on any machine on the

Yup, the problem I see with trying that is that the mail coming in via
SMTP would be rejected and sent back to the sender. That is, you lose
the mail.

Easier just to firewall it off I should imagine. Something like

/sbin/ipchains -A input -J DENY -p tcp -s 194.217.242.0/255.255.255.0
-d your.dotted.ip.addy 25

should do it.

I am setting up a Linux box with dialin remote access and and a dial out
