Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
i have a problem with my 100mbit ethernet here..
i connected two machines (linux/win98) using a twisted pair crossover
cable, both are equipped with 100mbit ethernet cards..
it all runs pretty fine, the only problem is that i keep getting
overrun errors on the windows machine (reported by the linux box,
wouldn't know how to find out on the winbox itself) and transfer rate
never gets any higher than 2,2mb/s.
also there is quite an amount of receive errors (linux box).
this is what ifconfig reports (after some data went thru the cable):
eth0 Link encap:10Mbps Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:E8:6F:DF:5E
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:1058918 errors:12617 dropped:0 overruns:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:9857067
Interrupt:11 Base address:0xfc00
i already tried switching the ethernet card inside the win-box to
half-duplex and other modes but it didn't help.
does anyone have any idea how i could fix that?
(all services work as well as ftp transfers, its just annoying to
know that its not properly configured and that its not as fast as
it could be)
this all happens on a 2.2.6 linux using donald becker's rtl8139.c
ethernet-driver.
not knowing if its relevant i'd like to add that i do get errors
and overruns from my isdn-dialup too:
ippp0 Link encap:Point-Point Protocol
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:16644722 errors:16569 dropped:0 overruns:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:916770
probably its just "normal", do you get same output from your dialups?
my linux box runs on "only" a 100mhz pentium, could that be the
reason?
any help is highly appreciated!

Tom, we offer DNS hosting for us$10/month; at the moment we're waiving
all setup fees. If you know how to maintain the files, you can,or we
can do it for you.
We currently allow unlimited changes at this price, but of course we
expect you to be reasonable <smile>.
We can handle geographic disbursement of your domain, which is easy, but
which many companies either don't offer, don't know how to offer, or
charge extra for.
We also offer such additional optional services as mail-hosting and
forwarding, POP3 mail boxes for your domain, SMTP via ETRN, web-hosting
and forwarding, etc.
Currently both our primary and secondary server are on the same network;
however we should be disbursed, with secondary, tertiary, etc., all over
the world, by the end of the month, as we're setting up secondary
service through ISPC.
If you're interested, please let me know.
Thanks.

Modify your way of running pppd to read:
pppd connect 'chat -v "" ATD<YOUR_NUMBER> CONNECT \\d\\c'
/dev/modem <YOUR_MODEM_SPEED> -detach noipdefault asyncmap 0
debug crtscts modem defaultroute name YourISPUserName &
Create or edit /etc/ppp/pap-secrets and /etc/ppp/chap-secrets so that each
contains this one line:
YourISPUserName * YourISPPassword
In all of the above you must replace YourISPUserName with your actual ISP
username (login name) and YourISPPassword with your actual ISP password.
I added a couple of options to the pppd argument list that have nothing
much to do directly with PAP or CHAP authentication but are usually
appropriate to avoid some common PPP link negotiation problems.
You should start using the *nix world's man pages. "man pppd" and "man
chat" will tell you about pppd and chap options and configuration files.

would this mean that the linux box would then have the IP address

advised or does'nt it matter ?
You mentioned the following..

Being quite new to the Ethernet network and setups how would one
specify the eth0 interface is there a command line I should use ?
Many thanks

Well, it depends. You will probally want to use some sort of IP
Masquarding. What kind of pc will be running Linux? If you want it to
masquarade and thats it check out www.linuxrouter.org for a disk based
router. If you want to use the box for something other then routing
I'd reccomend either Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 or Redhat 6.0, both
available from www.cheapbytes.com

Hi, I recently upgraded my RH5.2 box to kernel 2.2.5. Then all of a
sudden I could no longer authenticate (timing out) to our company's
NetWare 5 server using ncpmount. Slist still worked as did pqlist etc.
I figured I'd messed up the upgrade somehow and would wait until RH6 was
out and install that instead. (In the meantime I'm using samba and have
shared drives on an NT server which is logged in to the NW server as me -
not very nice).
However I installed RH6 and now I can't even do an slist:
slist: No server found in ncp_open
I tried doing an strace, and I get a 'Network unreachable trying to find
server' error. My ipx settings are OK, and it has picked up both the
EthernetII and Ethernet 802.2 networks and network numbers correctly, I
can see what's going on in ipxdump but still no joy.
Any ideas - thanks very much

Hi Group,
I hope somebody can point me to a better place if this is not the
appropriated ng to discauss this question.
I got the redhat linux 5.2 installation guide with the free CD from
linuxmall.com. Soon I realized that I need the boot discatte, or run autoboot
at cd-rom. However, at dos prompt the machine can't recognize d drive. I
suppose I need some driver. However this is school's box I'm messing around
with. I have absolutely no idea where to start.
I suppose I can get a bootdisk from a new linux distro (openLinux2.2 is
cheap) or get a linux 5.2 box from ebay. Any other recommendation? Any
program that can format a floppy disk in linux format and make a linux
bootdisk from the dos prompt?
Any input is greatly apprecated.

route add -net 192.168.10.0

You can always go to /etc/services, and block all services you
won't need.

It's probably easier to put them into /etc/hosts.allow,
/etc/hosts.deny. Look in the manpages.

Hmmm, mine (an early Linksys with a real Dec chip) seems to be working:
cat /proc/net/dev
Inter-| Receive | Transmit
face |bytes packets errs drop fifo frame compressed multicast|bytes packets
errs drop fifo colls carrier compressed
lo:585407792 2204419 0 0 0 0 0 0 585407792 2204419

42453440 13 0 2 0 11 0
I have several of these, some Intel 10/100 pros, and some of the 3Coms that
Dell builds into their motherboards. I have never had any problems
with the Intels. The only problem with the others have been occasional
mis-negotiations of 10/100 or half/full duplex with certain hubs or
switches. I've never seen a problem where the card works correctly
for a while and then fails. If you have this with more than one card
I would suspect some other problem. Try connecting to a different hub
or if you are using a switch lock it in full duplex, 100M for your
port. You might also have cable problems that only show up under
certain conditions. 100M equipment can be more sensitive to this
than the 10M versions, even when running at 10M. Be sure everything
is cat 5.

RH 5.2 networked to three windoze boxes. All Networking works. Diald to
ISP works. What doesn't work is when I mail from one user to another on
the linux box I get unknown user errors. I removed the pasword for ftp and
I can email from root to ftp no problem and from ftp to root. Any user I
have added with adduser is unknown to sendmail. Both Pine and Mail report
the same error. I am using the default sendmail setup. I have looked in
the doc and set up and can't find where I have to introduce the users to
sendmail. Where did I go wrong? Any suggestions?

I got your answer, but it hasn't worked out!
So any further suggestions?

With the 3c509 I get 8.5 Mbytes/sec with wget from 100Mbit switched ethernet
lan. It has never crashed, the machine is a web/ftp server and completely
reliable.
(With the same card I get 3.5MB/sec max with W98) ;-)

ITYM /etc/inetd.conf You should leave /etc/services as it is, unless
you want to add to it.

Not sure exactly what utility you mean. You can use ipfwadm or ipchains
to firewall off your Linux box, and tcp wrappers to limit services to
certain machines.

Hi,
Seems not to be the problem, because down and uploads are working fine
on both sides when connected to the Internet. Which is done over the
same line!
Thanks
