You can have chat report it by adding 'REPORT' 'CONNECT'' to your chat
scripts.
This is in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0 in RH5.2

I'm not sure about average data throughput directly, but you could
calculated it from output of 'pppstats'.

I was thinking of ridding my network of NFS clients and servers and using
Samba and smbfs as my only network filesharing.. However, my smbmount
doesn't work since I upgraded kernels to 2.2.6 and I think I know why, I
need a newer version of smbmount.. but before I go through all the trouble
I was wondering if it is worth it.. Obviously it would make it easier since
the Windows boxes already use SMB and makes everything uniform but is there
any speed advantage?

(both /dev/modem and /dev/mouse are just symlinks)

Actually, you have to be careful and use the same "name"
for your modem (let's say /dev/modem) in all applications which
use it, so that they would use the same lock file.
Otherwise you might end up accessing modem from two different
applications, and who knows what's gonna happen.

Best,
a.

Subject: Linux as a "smart" firewall with VPN
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 15:32:23 GMT

I am wanting to use my linux box as an in-between fro my client machines
and my DSL line. I know were to go for info on setting up firewalls and
such, but I have a monkey wrench to throw in. I need to access a PPTP
VPN from the client machines and I don't want to make them run the VPN
client on their machines.

Is there any way to make the Linux box automatically know, based on
subnet address or domain name, to direct traffic to the internet or to
the VPN (using the Linux VPN client). In other words, to the clients,
the VPN would be completely "black box" - they won't even know it's
there. (The login/passwd for the VPN is the same for all clients so I
have no problem with the Linux box "knowing" them)

This is for a home LAN - two or three clients on various platforms.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Subject: Problems to establish CompuServe PPP connection

Hey folks,

- I try to setup ppp on my machine, connecting to CompuServe (it's
a long story, but I am stuck with CompuServe, as they do some
  hosting for me).
- I had ppp already running on my machine with another ISP
which was using static IP addresses.
- I use pppd 2.2 and Kernel 2.0.30 (redhat 4.2 distribution)
- My ppp-on script seems to work fine. The modem is dialing, I can
see in the log file that ppp-on-dialer is working properly, and
After runnin it, the last line in /var/log/messages is
  May 11 23:32:49 hamburg pppd[827]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyp1
  This looks fine to me.
- running ipconfig doesn't list ppp0 at all, only lo
- running "ipconfig ppp0" produces this output:
  [root@hamburg ppp]# ifconfig ppp0
  ppp0 Link encap:Point-Point Protocol
            inet addr:0.0.0.0 P-t-P:0.0.0.0 Mask:0.0.0.0
            POINTOPOINT MTU:1500 Metric:1
            RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
            TX packets:7 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
- subsequent calls will have continuously increasing numbers
for RC packets and TX packets.
- What strikes me is that not even "Mask" has a proper value.
- I don't use CHAP or PAP authentication
- Any ideas? All input is mostly appreciated!!!

PPP works but when I dial in from a windows 95 client using PPP it just

If I use a terminal window after dial in Win 95 I can log in and start PPP

Check the file permission of the cache directory.
If you roun Squid as user nobody the permission must be rw for this user
try chown -R nobody.nogroup "cachedir"

Hi

I installed Netatalk, I think!!!!

Certainly I cannot see a STANDARD Appleshare volume BUT I can see my Linux
box if I put in its TCP/IP address.

However the only share I have read/write access too is my home directory.

I want however everyone to have full read/write access to a spare disk.
Although Netatalk SHOWS this it comes up as read only.

HOW do I change this for everyone?????

>randomly by my ip provider ?

Maybe it was a random scan, and s/he happened to notice that your
machine was open. Has it happened again since? Are you sure it wasn't
yourself telneting into your own machine?

Go into /etc/inetd.conf and disable any services you don't need by
putting a # in front of them, then restart inetd with

kill -HUP `pidof inetd`

"services you don't need" is anything that you know you don't need, and
anything that you aren't sure if you need it or not. Chances are you
can comment out practically everything that is open.

For the rest, you should check

/etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow

and make sure that they are set up properly. Assuming you are using TCP
wrappers. (You can tell if you are because the entries in
/etc/inetd.conf will look like -

blah blah blah /sbin/tcpd blah

or similar. )

Read the man pages for hosts.access and related things.

Basically, since someone has been inside your system and may have
compromised it, the safest thing to do is to remove and reinstall the
entire system. If you haven't done much with it yet, that may be your
best option.

and its not universally true - so don't believe it. it depends on the
implementation. there are no hard and fast rules on network gear

RE: lack of Linux support

You are probably tired of hearing this - from a search of newsgroups, it
looks like thie will not be the first message you've gotten on the
subject.

I am also disappointed in the lack of support for Linux at MediaOne
Express in Chicago. I have your service at home, it runs well when I
run Win98, and could very well run on Linux if I could get basic
information from Media One. It seems that other areas of the country do
not have this problem. Why is MediaOne Chicago ignoring this growing OS
market? Many people really interested in computers and fast, 24-7
access are going to be interested in Linux - the basic home user is more
likely to be happy with AOL and a phone modem, since they mostly just
use e-mail and basic web shopping pages.

Knowing the enthusiasm of this comunity, I bet you could get a couple of
volunteers to support other Linux users on MediaOne in Chicago - they
would just need your support to get going. Has anyone considered this as
a reasonable solution?

===================
I hope we can get other area users to e-mail MediaOne Chicago about
this. It's absolutely stupid! The amount of support I asked for was a
4-minute phone call with an actual tech person (as opposed to the
customer service people.) But, it's "against policy.."

What you need is IPMasquerading. if you go to www.linux.org, then go to
support/how-to you will find a document on it.. However, I just got
through spending about 24 hours making this work because there are a few
tiny (but very important) things these documents leave out.. If you are
running a stock RedHat 5.x or Slackware 3.4 or older feel free to email me
and I can help you out with it.. If it is any other form of Linux or if you
are using a kernel in the 2.2.x series then I have no idea so better ask
somebody else..

Subject: NIS Problems
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 12:59:00 GMT

I'm having trouble setting up a NIS server. It's at home, and I'm at
work, so I don't have the exact error messages, but I can explain what's
happening. I'm trying to build the NIS databases following the
NIS-HOWTO, and I'm running /usr/lib/yp/ypinit -m. rpcinfo shows ypserv
running. It says that it is entering the directory /var/yp/nis.domain
and running make, and then says there is no rule for make in
/var/yp/ypservers. It looks like this relates to the Makefile under the
make all: section, because if I removed ypservers from the list, it will
give me an error on the next listing under make all:. Anybody have any
idea what the problem is? It tells me that make failed, so try building
the database by hand, but I don't know how to do that. I tried running
makedbm with the same switches that the Makefile has, but that doesn't
look like it does anything.

Thank you very much for your help.

Check /etc/sysconfig/network and make certain IP forwarding is turned on.

As simple as it sounds to Linux-gurus... symlinks really baffled me at
first. They are like windows-shotcuts except on the command line.. see,
there is no such thing as /dev/modem.. so what you want to do is have the
file /dev/ttyS1 get called whenever a program looks for /dev/modem. You
could always direclty copy the file and have it use the name of /dev/modem,
but this is inefficient. So, just make a symbolic link using the ln
command (or Midnight Commander) from /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS1 and it should
work! The /dev/mouse and /dev/cdrom are pretty much the same idea.

Dial up server? You need to be more specific? Do you want people to
dial-in and connect to this box? Do you want this box to dial out and
connect to an ISP? Are you needing this machine to be a router for the
rest of the network? In either of these cases, YES.. it comes with what
you need.. However, I am not going to explain how to setup each
circumstance so you need to say what it is you want to do.

Well, you will need to edit the file /etc/smb.conf with a text editor. Go
through all of the selections and change the things you need.. You will
need to add some shared-folders to the list.. and change your workgroup
name.. It should work fine as RedHat 5.2 has Samba 95% setup for you
already. If samba ever appears to die on you, try reading the log files
under /var/log/samba and see why so you can correct the problems.
