Two major things.. first of all, if the card is in Plug-N-Play mode, you
need to put it into Legacy mode. Secondly, you need to be certain that
these are the correct resources and that nothing else in the computer is
using them.

Also, I suggest using a module and adding the IO and IRQ into the config
for the modules. Also, if your NE2000 card is a PCI card, there is a
seperate driver module for PCI NE2000 cards!

Haven't tried yet.

Yes to all.

One thing that might be obvious to everyone but me: Do I need to run
NetBIOS over TCP/IP? I currently run NetBIOS and TCP/IP.

I've got a Mod 95 & 2 Mod 77 working on TR and they all have the
module compiled into the kernel. The two 77s are on 2.0.35 (patched)
and the 95 is on 2.2.1. I've never had to do anything but compile
and go. I'll take a look at work tomorrow and see what IRQ etc
they're running on.

Subject: 3c509 and SoundBlaster Conflicts
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 13:26:08 -0700

Howdy. I recently got Red Hat 6.0 running on my box and ran into a very
bothersome prob. It seems that Linux and Winders both like to ignore
the SoundBlaster I have on IRQ 5 and instead double put the 3Com 3c509
ethernet card that I have on the same IRQ. I have both working in
Winders [big surprise, I know] but I still have problems in Linux. When
the ethernet is on IRQ 5 it will not detect the card. When I tried IRQ
11 which is what it is in in Winders it did not detect either. When I
tried the default for the 3c509 [IRQ 10, IO 0x300] it detected but
still failed, although this time much quicker. Later I tried IRQ 9
which was said to be free in Windows and it failed to detect in Linux.
I know the card is not in Plug N Prey.

The SB is very picky and will only go onto certain IRQs, 5 is the only
one available on my machine. I would also try putting my mouse in USB
mode to free up IRQ 12, but I know it won't fly in Linux.

Is there any way to view IRQ listings in Linux? If I could view the
listing I am hoping I could find a free slot to get my ethernet in. If
my ethernet is detected, how do I configure it again? I am kinda new at
this so please bear with my ignorance. Thanks in advance.

Allow me to add some information since I'm in the same boat as Tom:

It has a chip with LUCENT 40-04834 marked on it. The 3Com number is

Can someone help point us to a driver which handles this chip?

Subject: Red Hat 6.0 upgrade - TAR PROBLEM
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 15:30:33 -0500

I upgraded from 5.2 to 6.0 yesterday. Should have waited :). When I tried
to upgrade it wasn't really successful. Things booted, but that was about
it ..no apache, no squid, no secure server. So last night I wiped it all
clean (after tarring the important files) and started over. I got the
system back up with squid running, basic apache running. But I still have
two basic problems:

1. When I went to untar the files it spewed out a half dozen files and then
said "Skipping to next file header" and quit...........now all my files are
off in never never land somewhere. I still have the original tar file by
the way. I did a simple "tar xvf www.tar" to do this. Files were not
compressed...any help..PLEASE!!

2. As far as I can tell..no secure server anymore?? I tried installing
secure server 2.0 on the first try (the upgrade try) but it bombed out with
all kinds of errors because of new and updated files. But I thought the new
version included a secure version of Apache....I need to get that back
online asap.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry about the first reply, I screwed up, abviously :) As for your
problem, this reply is with the assumption that you upgraded your kernel
to 2.2.5 from 2.0.3*, so if my assumption is false, read no further.

If you indeed did so, then did you upgrade your dhcpcd as well once you
upgraded the kernel? I think I'm running 1.3 something now with my 2.2.4.
Also, if that doesn't help, then check out the dhcp mini-HOWTO to get your
dhcpcd working properly. It looks like your cable modem and your NIC is
working fine.

Subject: network issues
Date: 12 May 1999 03:18:08 GMT

Hi everyone. I've got some serious networking issues. I have a server called
ziggurat which is running kernel version 2.2.6 and has two Linksys EtherFast
cards in it. It's also got the masq action going, via use of the ipfwadm
wrappers. I have a workstation called monolith that is masked behind it and
runs kernel version 2.2.0. It has a 3Com Vortex/Boomerang card.

So the issue is that I am getting 3 second ping times between the two computers.
I'm not doing anything to the outside world...just pinging between my two
computers. I've ruled out just about all the hardware possibilities by testing
all sorts of things - cards, cables, hub, etc. However, I could be wrong...

Earlier today, it was working just fine for a few hours, but has since gone
back to being very slow. The strangest thing is if I try to telnet from one
to the other. Initially, it takes a very long time to establish the
connection. But once it is set up, I can do stuff at a pretty good speed.
However, doing things like ftp or web stuff is just about impossible.

Please help...I feel like I'm on a 14.4 modem!

Date: Thu, 13 May 1999 00:29:43 GMT

I've been trying for about two weeks to get my Linux/RH5.1 system
NFS server running. I've had some help from the net and know
more about diagnosing the trouble. At this point I'm convinced
that my configuration is correct and something else is broken.
For what it's worth, I've read a great deal of DejaNews stuff on
the topic before deciding that I should post for help again.
Excluding the NFS server, the rest of my network setup is working
just fine.

The symptom I can't get beyond is this:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs start reports these errors:

    rpc.mountd Cannot register service:
RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection refused
    rpc.nfsd Cannot register service:
RPC: Unable to receive; errno = Connection refused

I'm at my wits end on this. Please help, if you can.
Many thanks in advance....
