Subject: IPX/PPP Problem
Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 17:01:32 GMT
I have a Linux machine (P133, 98M ram, 4Gig hard
drive) using RedHat 5.0 kernel build 2.0.36.
I rebuilt the kernel for PPP & IPX support, fired it up and
dialed in. I have got TCP/IP working without any problems or errors
and
I can 'surf' the net with Netscape no problem.
I added the lines :
Ipxcp-accept-network
Ipxcp-accept-remote
Ipxcp-accept-local
To my options file and pppd fell over complaining that
it did not know what they were. I downloaded the latest 'ppp' from the
RedHat Web site and installed it.
PPPD stopped complaining about the 'ipxcp' commands.
I enter the command 'ipx_interface add -p ppp0 802.2' there was
no error
Ifconfig tells me that there is an IPX protocol on ppp0 - but no
node address.
When I do slist I get the error 'no server found in ncp_open'
I thought that this may have implied that it had not seen an IPX
packet over the link as yet so it could not allocate a network number
so
I left it running for about 4 hours only to get the same error from
slist, same response from ifconfig.
After reading every HOWTO, FAQ and Web search I can I am at a
dead end.
BTW: I run both computers (The server I am dialing into and the client
I am using to dial in).
I have tried the latest experimental kernel with no luck
either.(2.1.132)
Thank You,
William

Subject: Re: SuSe 6.0 + 2.2.5 = No network!

There are a variety of possibilities here.. First of all, are you compiling
your network card driver as a module or part of the kernel? If you are
making it as a module, a common thing is to forget to run
make modules
make modules_install
after compiling the kernel.. This will install the newly compiled network
modules in their proper places and set them up. If this isn't the problem,
run ifconfig and look at the functioning network devices. Does your
network card show up? If not, try these commands:
ifconfig eth0 up
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 (or any old IP address you like)
See what happens. If that is working, check your routing table.. use the
route command to see what the table looks like.. you might need to run a
command like:
route add default gw 192.168.0.1 (or whatever the IP of your NIC is)
yes, this should all be automatically setup, but if it isn't this will get
it going until you figure out why it isn't automatic.

Subject: Masquarading X sessions?
Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 18:56:46 GMT
I use a masquarading Linux at my Internet connection. How can I get X
servers behind the firewall to receive display? I tried setting
$DISPLAY to the firewall, it won't work. Set it to any internal names
(or IPs, I use private IPs), the client couldn't recognize it.
Another test I made was with the routing on the other side of the
firewall. I set a static route to my private IP. But the machine still
attempts to route packets to default gateway.

You may already have tried several of these things, but if not, one
of them may help things get going.
1. Make SURE that the Tx and Rx pins are connected by twisted
pairs. The best way to do this is by visual inspection: if the cable is
made using (US) standard color coding, then pins 1&2 should have
white/green and green/white wires attached to them on one end, and
white/orange and orange/white wires at the other end. Similarly, pins
3&6 should have white/orange and orange/white at one end, and white/green
and green/white wires at the other end. If this is not so, then in the
words
of Jean-Luc Picard, "Make it so." This is my best guess at the problem,
on account of the Tx errors you report.
2. You still need to have routes in both route tables, even if you are
only
connecting 2 computers. Using the command #netstat -rn, verify that
you have a line like this on each system:
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS window
irtt Iface
192.168.134.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 1500 0
0 eth0

Type modprobe -l and you should see something like.
/lib/modules/2.0.36/ipv4/ip_masq_ftp.o
/lib/modules/2.0.36/ipv4/ip_masq_irc.o
Have you done the, make modules , make modules_install ?
This maybe the problem I'm willing to bet it is trying to return the
directory list to the default ip of the box doing the ftp which may
give you a port error and not give a directory list.
Just a rookie myself, but this may stir up a better answer . :)

I'm having troubles with my PPP script again.
This time it might be that "can't locate module ppp-compress-21" error I
get just before I'm assigned an IP address from my ISP.
How can I fix that?

Only thing I can suggest now is to try some of the other ne2000 setup
programs and see if they work
for you card. You might start at ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network.
ether16.exe might work.

I'm in a telnet session to my unix host (Linux, if it makes a difference),
and I enter the "who am i" command. My unix host replies with
srdscs05!pitchl ttyp1 May 14 13:03 (49.21.20.105)
and I note that the IP address in parenthesis is the IP address of my
Windows NT client machine (from which I telnet to unix).
OK, how does 'who' determine that IP address? Could that technique
(what ever it is) be used to answer this thread's original question?

Could anyone out there please tell me why my identd server (on a Slack
3.6/35 box)
appears to be running fine, but doesn't send out proper replies to get
onto any EFNet
and most other networks IRC servers? I've tried the standard ident,
cident, jidentd
and mident... But no matter what, the IRC servers give me a "You are
not authorized
to use this server" blah blah blah, because there is no, or an improper
ident response.
I'd like to have this work over the entire network (to masq'd 95/NT
machines), but
right now I'd even be happy with it working on the linux box (live
internet)...
Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

Subject: TN3270E on Linux?
Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 15:30:38 -0500
Hi,
I am a newbie to Linux. I am running Redhat Linux 6.0. Does anyone know if
there are any TN3270E emulators available for Linux besides the X3270.rpm
that comes with the Redhat Distribution. Specifically, I looking for an
emulator that can establish print sessions to an IBM mainframe.
Thanks,

I had the same problem, and it turned out that my /etc/hosts file was
causing my computer to register at the ISP using my local IP number.
If your config looks something like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost
a.b.c.d mycomp
Try changing it to:
127.0.0.1 localhost mycomp
Hope that helps,

WinModem junk. Throw it away and buy a nice external modem.
