I had the same problem with the 3c59x v0.99H driver at RedHat 5.2
with the Kernel 2.0.36 (Two P2 233 boxes with identical 905B-TX NICs
directly connected by crosswired TP cable). Each time 3c59x driver
initialize the NIC falls down to 10bps. Even the following settings
in the conf.modules
alias eth0 3c59x
options 3c59x options=20 full_duplex=1
changed nothing. Eventually I was able to resolve the trouble
by increasing some timing parameter in the driver as follows
477c477
< { "100baseTX", Media_Lnk, 0x02, XCVR_100baseFx, (40*HZ)/10},
---
> { "100baseTX", Media_Lnk, 0x02, XCVR_100baseFx, (14*HZ)/10},
Now networks works fine at 100bps. Maybe such "surgery" results
in some performance penalty, but have nothing to compare...

Subject: mgetty - no dialout
Date: 15 May 1999 06:30:54 GMT
I installed mgetty and got it working to accept incoming calls
(I'm running Red Hat 5.2). I can call my linux computer from
my win98 computer and run telnet, ftp and bring up my homepage
from my win98 netscape (strictly computer to computer connection).
My problem is that now I can't dial out to get to my ISP
(it worked before mgetty). Here is my inittab:

I've been trying and reading, but no success.
Why is the connect script failing? The modem doesn't even
make any sound when I activate my ppp0 interface from network
configuration in x. To dial out, I have to put in my old inittab
without mgetty. What's the problem?

If you are really set on internal modems, Viking makes trouble free, non
PCI, LINUX friendly modems. I have one and just had to set up the ppp
nothing extra for the modem. Also, USRobotics 56k "Fax" modem whis sells
retail pretty high right now has also proven to be a trouble free
installation for LINUX. (Make sure its the 56k "Fax" not Winmodem or
anything else) Comp USA sells it for those of you who prefer not to buy
over the internet.

When I connect to my ISP I get an IP address and everything seems to be OK.
But I can't do anything. (like ping, ftp, browsing etc) "WTF!" Was my
thought cause according to /var/log/messages everything SHOULD be ok.
But when I checked "ifconfig" there is no ppp0 interface.
My /etc/resolv.conf should be ok.
Is there anything else I've missed??
Thanx a mill!!

Subject: PPP Server probable LCP problem?
Date: 15 May 1999 06:52:31 GMT
I am trying to get a PPP server on my Linux box (Debian 2.0.34) going
using getty and pppd and am having trouble getting a connection from a
Win98 machine to stay up. The connection seems to hang at "Verifying
user name and password" and then errors with "The computer you're dialing
in to cannot establish a Dial-Up Networking connection. Check your
password and then try again." The Win98 dial-up connection is configured
with all the defaults...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
