Subject: dnsserver binary - what does it do?
Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 03:11:34 GMT
I've noticed Red Hat distributions have an executable called "dnsserver"
in addition to "named" and "routed". There's no man path for dnsserver
and no help when I run it. Does anybody know what this program does and
how it relates to named, if at all?
Thanks. Ken B.

Subject: Failed diagnosis.txt Test 5 - Please help

Howdy:
I have 3 computers on an Ethernet network: a Win95, a Win98, and a
Linux. The Win98 and the Linux are able to connect flawlessly using
Samba. However I am having some problems with the Win95. While I and
able to Telnet to the Linux machine it does not appear in the
"Neighborhood Network". In working through Andrew Tridgell's
DIAGNOSIS.txt I do fine up to Test 5.
====================================================================
TEST 5:
run the command "nmblookup -B ACLIENT '*'"
You should get the PCs IP address back. If you don't then the client
software on the PC isn't installed correctly, or isn't started, or you
got the name of the PC wrong.
======================================================================
Here is what I get back:
# nmblookup -B rct '*'
Sending queries to 10.0.0.1
Name_query failed to find name *
So, what software install/start on the PC? Thanks!

Try using the AT command to initialize the modem
AT&F AT&D2&C1X4V1Q0S7=70&M4&B1&H1&R2
I am using these command to connect my isp, using slackware 3.6
Have a look at the www.ibm.net about the ppp connection.
Have a good luck.

Subject: Re: 3c509 Cant see packets
Date: 15 May 1999 20:03:35 -0700
I have a very similar problem on my system.
Because of repeated complains about the 3c509b-TPO card support by the
2.0.3? kernels -- and maybe Linux in general -- I would conclude the the
driver written for the card is causing more disservice and problems than
any other around.
Of course, in some cases the problems may be caused by IRQ conflict, pnp
crap, etc, but in the majority of the complains which I read about the
card this is not the case.
I, for instance, have the IRQ=10 (no other subsystem is using it, because
without the card don't see it in /proc/interrupts) and IO port 0x300
(again, no conflicts). I have switched off the pnp support on the card
using a Windows config program for it.
The cards initializes, the ifconfig talks to it OK.
I have a home LAN with the 10baseT hub and connections to the @home server.
Let's say "the system with 3c509b" has the IP X.Y.Z.p1 and my other system
has IP X.Y.Z.p2. The @home server has address X.Y.Z.1.
So, the system with the HP 2585B PCI card (with the p2 address) communicates
to the @home without problems.
The system with the 3c509b card can only smoothly ping itself.
When I ping the server, X.Y.Z.1, every other return is marked as DUP
and the return times are hundreds of ms. After a certain time I cannot
ping the server at all.
What annoys me the most, however, is that I cannot ping my other system
(with the X.Y.X.p2 address). In other words, the card cannot talk to systems
in the same subnet. Why does it talk (with hick-ups) to the server is another
puzzle.
I need also to add, that when I boot my system with the 3c509b card to
NT workstation, I can smoothly talk to the @home server, can easily
communicate to my other system (over the hub).
The 3c509b support under Linux sucks!
Whoever worked on it must be a hidden MS follower.
Zenon
PS.
Just want to add, that on both systems have a Debian recent distribution.
In despair I have also tried the newest SuSE system, but the result was
exactly the same. Linux with 3c509b is lame.

Personally, I use Postfix (see www.postfix.org). Speed comparable to
Qmail, simpler configuration, no need to change the MUA configuration,
a more sensible logfile format, and a less abrasive maintainer.

im just taking a wild guess here, literaly, but are the permisions for

Hi!
I've got RH52 and the samba version that came with the RH distribution. Now
I want to use printers on win95 stations.
I've got a Novell network and userlevel security on win95, the userlist is
fetched from the novell (3.2) server.
Anytime I try to connect to a win95 station this message is displayed:
Session request failed (131,130)
with myname=PRINT destname=COMPUTER
Called name not present
Try to connect to another name (instead of COMPUTER)
Any way to connect anyway?

Hi totempolem,
Here is a sample config that works well for me:
******************** <CUT HERE>
set syslog
set daemon 900
poll mail.somemailserver.com
proto POP3
user marbles has pass reallysecret is john here
poll mail.amailserver.com
proto POP3
user abacus has pass prettysecret is peter here
user calculator has pass secretpretty is paul here
*************<CUT HERE>
The set syslog is used to log to /var/log/maillog so I can see if there were
any errors with the process
the set daemon 900 makes it run transparently and polls the servers every
900 seconds.
The rest is self explanitory, just replace the appropriate mailserver,
usernames and accounts with the correct ones

Subject: Help: BOOTP response isn't getting through.
Date: Sat, 15 May 1999 22:20:31 -0600
Hi,
I was hoping someone could help me with a BOOTP configuration problem.
My server is recognizing the BOOTP request from the Diskless Linux Box,
and generating the correct response, as seen by tcpdump:
on eth0:
20:57:36.809982 0.0.0.0.bootpc > 255.255.255.255.bootps:
xid:0xc8fcdc3f secs:451 [|bootp] (DF)
on eth1!!!
20:57:41.075856 pacbell_host.bootps > 255.255.255.255.bootpc:
xid:0xc8fcdc3f Y:kenny S:portal.pacbell.net [|bootp]
The problem is that I'm running a firewall on the machine that is also
the BOOTP server. It seems that the response is being sent to the
remote interface (and off to my ISP) instead of staying on the local
net. I added the following firewall rules to allow the request to be
accepted in the first place:
# local interface, local machines using BOOTP is valid
ipfwadm -I -a accept -W eth0 -S 0.0.0.0/0 68 -D 0.0.0.0/0 67 -P udp
ipfwadm -O -a accept -W eth0 -D 0.0.0.0/0 68 -S 0.0.0.0/0 67 -P udp
How do I keep the BOOTP response on the local net (eth0) ? Do I need
another firewall rule?
Much Thanks in advance,
Brian

I did not examine all your data, but have you tried this.....
I could not get Linux to recognize my modem at all until I jumpered it manually on the
modem itself (with the shorting blocks) then it dialed out fine. Of course Windows
balked entirely at that as it would only recogine the modem jumpered as PNP.... go
figure...
