open dos-box on win98
telnet to linux (telnet 192.168.1.3)

on win9x, start exceed (just so you have the x-window-server ready)
in the telnet window, type 'xterm -display 192.168.1.3'

You can add a paramenter to your lilo.conf file to prompt
for a password before allowing "linux single" to work, but
this may not stop somebody from bringing in their own boot
floppy and bypassing your protected lilo. If you can't
physically secure the machine so the floppy device can't be
used you will need to enable a BIOS password or at least
change the boot order so that the machine always tries to
boot off the HD before looking for a bootable floppy.

I guess I did not provide enough information.
I have a linux server.
Additionally to that server, I have a printer that is an ethernet
printer directly connected to the network. It is a HP 4M Plus that is a
postscript printer, then it is standalone. It has it own IP number.
I setup a printer queue on the server in the /etc/printcap with the line
"rm=<IP number>"
When I log on the server as root, I am able to print to it. When I log
as a user without special rights, I cannot and I get the message
"lpr: connect: permission denied.
Jobs queued, but cannot start daemon."
The explaination I had in the printing howto is that my network connect
is badly configured, but it is then paradoxal that I would be able to
print when being root. I wondered if anyone had a hint. I changed the
file permissions, but it is maybe not sufficient.

All you should have to do is:
route add -net x.x.x.0 dev eth0 (packets for x.x.x.- network go
through ethernet)
route add default gw x.x.x.y metric 1 (where x.x.x.y is the ip of your
gateway -- the Mac)
--lastly--
edit /etc/resolv.conf and insert your ISP DNS servers. It would like:
search
nameserver 100.200.200.200 (of course, place your primary
and second DNS here)
nameserver 100.200.200.201

By default it assumes that it's on some network...You need only edit the

Hi,
I'm accessing the net through a homebuild firewall.
Now I have the problem that the realaudio client seems to get through
(it says connecting to <host>) and after that it starts buffering data.
So far so good.
Problem is that it doesn't play anything.
The firewall seems to be accepting the data, and buffering it (disk activity).
But the client just ends when the ra file ends, playing nothing.
I've set up ipfwadm to accept realaudio packages by:
ipfwadm -I -a accept -P tcp -W eth1 \
-S 0.0.0.0/0 554 7070 7071 \
-D <firewall_ip> 554 7070 7071
ipfwadm -O -a accept -P tcp -W eth1 \
-S <firewall_ip> 554 7070 7071 \
-D 0.0.0.0/0 554 7070 7071
ipfwadm -I -a accept -P udp -W eth1 \
-S 0.0.0.0/0 6970:7170 \
-D <firewall_ip> 6970:7170
And to masquerade the internal network with:
ipfwadm -F -a masquerade -W eth1 \
-S <local_network_ip_range> \
-D 0.0.0.0/0
I even inserted the module ip_masq_raudio, but that also doesn't seem to do
anything.
Is there anyone who has an idea what mistake I made?
Thanx,

Hi Roger,
In the smb.conf file are a few parameters that control case
preservation/sensitivity on the Linux box. You can, in fact, preserve the
case that the filename is in by:
preserve case = yes
For windows clients you should leave
case sensitive = no
or leave it default (which is no).

Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 16:20:34 -0400
Hello:
I've recently gotten a hold of RH6, and I noticed that there isn't an
easy way to get dial-on-demand PPP working. There's diald, but that
seems difficult to incorporate into the way that RH has things setup.
There was a MiniHOWTO about using the request route features of kerneld
to do demand dialing, but that also seems difficult to setup.
I'm coming from a FreeBSD background where the PPP daemon itself (with
the help of a kernel device) accomplishes demand dialing. It's a simple
addition to the PPP daemon's config file to turn it on.
What's the consensus on the easiest way to get a demand dial setup with
Linux?

On the client machines, set up your modem machine as the gateway, and put
your ISP's nameserver in the client machines /etc/resolv.conf. This way the
client machines go straight to your ISPs name server and just use your modem
machine as a router.
Depending on your setup (if your ISP doesn't give you static IPs for all
your clients) you will need to set up IP_MASQ on the modem machine, and if
you only want to connect to your ISP when needed the you will need to set up
dial on demand (diald or something like it).
Of course, your modem machine will need some routing rules for firewalling,
etc, but thats all discussed here fairly often and is part of the IP_MASQ
stuff anyway.

Hello!
I think you need to give your Linux host a name other then name of your PDC.
As far as accessing this server for your WIndows clients two ways:
1) assign static IP address to the Linux box and add this box to your DNS.
2) use DHCP client on the Linux box, but also configure (smb.conf) it to be
a Wins client.
In tha second scenario Windows clients will be able to resolve Linux box's
name via WINS.
Good luck

Did you install the network card's drivers (either by making a new
kernel or loading the module for it)?
Having the hardware plugged in is only half of it: if you don't tell
Linux you want to -use- the hardware, it will gladly ignore it.

Please see the following link to read our latest press release regarding the
forthcoming launch of OMNIS Studio on the LINUX operating system platform.
http://www.omnis-software.com/whatsnew/press/linux.html
The beta version will be available from July 1999, with full release in
September this year.
We believe we have a real first here, as OMNIS Studio represents a true
4GL Rapid application development system that is binary compatible with
both Windows and Macintosh machines, and soon LINUX.
This means that developers are totally free to choose their preferred
development platform, and then deploy applications without alteration in
all of the above environments.
If you require any more information about OMNIS Studio, or would like to
know about some of the many commercial applications written in OMNIS
that will soon be available for the LINUX environment please don't
