Hi

I'm new to Linux. Just installed Redhat Linux and cannot get the
network cards to work correctly. I have 2 cards and i want to get a t
least one working. Linux recognizes the PCI card which is Linksys
card. The card is recognized as Tulip but on startup, it does not load
correctly. It says that it failed. I really don't know my way around
Linux and i have gnome and kde installed. This means that I need as
much help as i can get. :)

I've been looking for information all day today and yesterday on the web
and cannot find anything. I say something about configuring rc... but
i don't know how to do that. I have also been on irc without any
success. I would appreciate ANY help :)

Subject: have to run LISA every time - newbie
Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 07:13:11 GMT

I'm new to Linux, and just starting running OpenLinux 2.2 on my
notebook. I have pretty much gotten networking up and running, but I
have a silly problem:

Every time I boot my machine, I have to run LISA and specify all of my
basic networking info in order to get the network up and running.. and
then bam! everything works fine.

I have an NT machine which acts as a proxy server/gateway so that I can
share a net connection. The NT machine is setup as 192.168.0.1. On the
Linux box, the interface address for the configured network card is
192.168.0.3, but the "localhost" is 127.0.0.0. Could this be the root
of the problem? If so, how do I change the localhost to make it
192.168.0.3?

thanks in advance.

Subject: Using procmailrc to bounce back messages
Date: 17 May 1999 13:58:31 +0800

Hi.

I have a shell account on a linux ISP, and I'd like to use it to be able to
bounce back messages to their source, for testing other network/computer
installations.

I would like to configure a rule in my .procmailrc file to do this.

What I have currently is this :

:0 : bouncelockfile
* ^Subject: BOUNCE_BACK
| cat - >tmp_bounce ; cat tmp_bounce | (/usr/bin/formail -r | \
   /usr/bin/gawk '{print }\
   /^/ && !HEADER \
     { system("/bin/cat bouncebackfile tmp_bounce") }' ) |\
     /usr/bin/sendmail -t ; rm tmp_bounce

So, whenever a message is received with BOUNCE_BACK as the subject, the message
including all headers gets sent back to the sender. The problem with the above
is that in the bounced back message, it has the original message (and the
contents of the bouncebackfile file) five times, rather than just once. I know
this looks like a bit of a hack, and I'd like a better way to do this. Does
anyone know of one ?

Also, I'd also like the option of changing the username of the sender of the
rebound message. Currently, the rebound message sender information is from the
/etc/passwd file. How do I overide this to use an alternate sender name and
sender username ?

Thanks.

Chris Severn.

Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 05:33:53 GMT

I am running Linux 5.1 through a cox@home cable
modem using IP Masq and it works great with only
one problem(so far).

I cannot send or receive e-mail from my WIN95 box
using the mail settings provided by Cox. I can use
netmail.home.com to download e-mail but am still
unable to send e-mail. It appears that I am unable
to get to the COX@home SMTP server through my
linux server. I am able to send and receive e-mail
from the Linux box however.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, you need to download apache from http://www.apache.org/ and read
the install and readme file. That's the first step. Then if you have
problems, read the apache faq:

http://www.apache.org/docs/misc/FAQ.html

These two steps are mandatory before asking help.

>Which files do I need to edit and what lines need to be added?

Again, RTFM first.

That's a DNS issue, probably. Make sure the name you are referencing
exists in dns, or whatever mapping system you may be using on that
machine.

>Other errors I have had are that Netscape can not execute the POST method
>for a certain CGI that I am trying reference.

Sounds like you need to read the faqs and docs first, then maybe these
issues will be a bit clearer to you, and when/if you do ask for help
you can be more specific. The above paragraph tells me nothing.

I suggest in the future, you post to comp.infosystems.www.servers.unix
as that's the apache unix newsgroup.

Hi,

I am trying to set up a web server using Apache on RedHat 5.2. The purpose
of this is so I can use and improve CGI's (written in Perl).

Does anybody know where there is some kind of how-to page for setting up an
Apache web server to execute CGI scripts locally?

Which files do I need to edit and what lines need to be added?

Currently when I use Netscape and point it to
        http://localhost.localdomain/
An error dialogue appears saying that Netscape can not find
localhost.localdomain.

Other errors I have had are that Netscape can not execute the POST method
for a certain CGI that I am trying reference.

And, of course, it's always so nice to present that big bill for

Which, furthermore, raises the question: why does MICROS~1 even

You specify what dns servers your winblowz machine uses via the
network control panel. Look for tcp/ip, and go to dns configuration.
Enable it, and set the ips and search domains and so on in there.

If you know the name of the "share" you want to mount,
you can use the smbmount command to make a shared volume on an
NT box appear in your Web space.

I have not figured out how to find out what "shares" are available.

If you want to "share" directories (and printers) on the network, you need a
program called SAMBA. See www.samba.org

As far as I know no one has made a driver for winmodems or PnP. I just
recently bought a new modem for my linux box after mistakenimgly buying
a USR modem that wasn't declared a _winmodem_ but was close as you can
get to it. Most stores if you don't live in a huge city are only going
to carry USR modems that are winmodems. My suggestion is to take it
back and get your money back (or sell it). Look for a modem that is
has an ISA interface (or external) as opposed to PCI and make sure it
has plently of jumpers to turn PnP off and set the com port along with
IRQ. If you can, try to look directly at the modem to verify that or
verify those features at least in writing on the box. Many modems have
slight differences but sell as the same name so be carefull. Make sure
its v.90 compliant for 56k :-) As soon as I got my new modem, changed
the jumpers, put it in, and declared the com port it worked
immeditately.

Hope that helps.

I think you're SOL... IIRC, MS Proxy Server requires a "client" to be
installed on each machine behind it.

Dump Proxy Server, and use the Linux box and IP Masquerading to share
Internet access. It's far more secure than leaving that NT box
hanging out on the 'Net, too.

Interesting. If you have something like this on SERVER's
/etc/exports:

/ some.ip.or.domain(with_options_if_any)

Then you should be able to mount the root partition from SERVER to
some.ip.or.domain on /mnt with something like:

mount -t nfs SERVER:/ /mnt

If you have something like:

/home some.ip.or.domain(with_options_if_any)

in SERVER's /etc/exports, Then you should only be able to mount /home
from SERVER to some.ip.or.domain on /mnt with something like this:

mount -t nfs SERVER:/home /mnt

You did all this and it only works if both lines:

/ some.ip.or.domain(with_options_if_any)
/home some.ip.or.domain(with_options_if_any)

are in /etc/exports on the SERVER? If so, I'd check to make sure you
are running the newest NFS server suite.

Why do you want one? The default route tells the system where to send
stuff if it does not know where to send it. Since you connection to the
ISP is down, nothing can be sent there. So the default route is useless

I presume this is on an nfs mounted ssytem. Remember that file
ownerships are by number, not name. Thus if your users have different
uid numbers of the two machines, they will not own the files across teh
two machines. It is the same numbered user that owns the files, not the
