Hi

I have been experiencing bandwith problems on my dialup connection
lately. I am running RH5.2 with 2.2.9 upgrade and ppp 2.3.8.

My problem is i can only do one thing at a time like say download ,ftp
etc. Anything else like say a telnet ,netscape  else gets slow. I have
been using linux for a year now. this happened when i reinstalled redhat
5.2 after a small mishap partitioning (long story). So this current
install with the latest kernel and ppp version doesn't seem to help.

I checked the /var/log/messages file previously I would have only the
pppd started local ip and stuff. But now i get tons of innd, identd and
named messages. I don't think i got those before. I'm not sure whether
those are routine messages. I read news, telnet and browse the web.

I connect at 28800 -45333 bps most of the times.

I'm not sure if it is my system or the isp. How do i check if my system
has a misconfiguration problem.

All help would be appreciated.

Hello,

I have the following setup:

* Linux Samba/NFS server holding all source code for a development
  project.
* Linux laptop NFS-mounting a home directory on the server and editing
  the source files.
* W95 machine mounting same home directory over Samba.  This machine
  runs an embedded compiler, emulator, etc. 

I also run NTP to sync time between the Linux machines, and I use "net
time \\server /set /yes" to set the time on the Windows machine.

My problem is that files edited on the server from the laptop do not
update properly when accessed from the Windows machine.  When I type
"make", make determines that the file has changed, and so invokes the
compiler properly to recompile the file.  Unfortunately, the file
contents appears not to have updated, because I get the same compile
errors.  The best way I've found to get around this is to use the DOS
"type" command to type the file to the screen.  Only then does the
file completely update and compile properly (or at least with
different errors).

This continues for many minutes - at least 5 - until I finally relent
and "type" the file.

The problem goes away if I log in to the server and edit it there.
(But this solution is undesirable.)  This led me to believe that the
problem was with NFS.  However, remounting with the "noac" option (no
attribute caching) has no effect.  Nor does explicity sync'ing the
file systems on either the NFS client or server ("sync" from shell).

Any suggestions?  I'm at my wit's end.

Just for the archives I had to specify the block size as Solaris apparently uses a 
different default to linux, ie. "restore tbf 1024 hostname:/dev/rmt/0n"

Hi,

I think I'm a pretty experienced Linux user but I seem to be completely
missing this Samba thing.
I followed the instructions for installation and setup but I have no
clue how to even test it.

For instance, under 95 I go to Tools->Map Network Drives
Then what? What do I enter for the path?

Then I go Add Printer->Network Printer
Then what? What's the Path.
If I do Browse, I get Network Neighborhood... Entire network but nothing
under there.

Can any one please give me a jump start? (The main thing I'm interested
in is sharing linux hardware with windows.)


My setup is this.
A linux box with 2 interfaces. eth1 is the local network. The IP address
is 146.125.4.98
The box is (very successfully) running IP Masquerading. In has an lp:
printer configured. That woks fine, too.

The windows box is connected with a cross-over cable directly to eth1.
Like I said, all basic stuff is working. I can use the web (ip masq),
ftp, telnet, etc the linux box.

Can anyone help? I am certain that this has a simple, easy solution.

I have two machines:
   dev2  (192.168.1.3)
   main  (192.168.1.1 and 158.152.71.154)

"main" has a dialup connection to the 'net.
"dev2" is connected to "main" via ethernet.

"main" and "dev2" can talk to each other (ping, telnet, etc).
"main" can access the net "and it being used for this posting).
"dev2" can't access the 'net via "main".

Obviously, I want it to!

I want "main" to actroute add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask as the router for
the 192.168.1.* network (eth0).
All these machines should be able to use "main" to hope onto the 'net.

Main's eth0 config looks like this:

  route add -host 158.152.71.154 dev lo
  ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1  netmask 255.255.255.255
  route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
  route add default gw 158.152.71.154 dev eth0

Dev2's config is as follows:
  ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.3 netmask 255.255.255.255
  route add -host main dev eth0
  route add default gw main dev eth0

Main's output from "route" when it is dialled up is the following:

I have made some progress, but got stuck at the diagnosis test #8.

When I do
C:\> net view \\146.125.4.98      (where 146.125.4.98 is the IP of the
server)

I get

Error 86: The specified network password is not correct. Type the
correct password, or contact you network adnimistrator for more
information.

Interestingly, if I mention a bogus IP address (e.g. 146.125.4.97 does
not exist on my subnet) *I get the exact same error*!!!

Further, the server does not appear under Network Neighborhood or Entire
Network.

Please help! Just suggest something I could test/try....

Well first of all Steve, thanks for the kind offer of assistance. I think I
MAY have most of it licked, but I'm a little confused as to how I got here!
Using LinuxConf didn't work, editing the files by hand didn't work ~ but
then I enabled SWAT (suggest you edit the package description in the manual.
It seems to imply tha SWAT is enabled by the RPM inprocess) and found the
buttons for 'start smbd' and 'start nmbd'. I had previously verified my
/etc/services file for the netbios-ssn and netbios-ns entries and added
entries to inetd.conf to start these services - but that didn't seem to work
--- any thoughts?

Starting these service manually makes the exported share 'connectable', but
not 'browseable' at this point. At least I can use smbclient on the RHL box
or 'net use' on the Win98 box to verify that SOMETHING is 'there'.

I still have some work to do figuring out why my passwords don't seem to
'take', but that's likely 'pilot error' at this point. My biggest issues are
getting the smbd and nmbd services to start automatically and to get
browsing working. You can assume that other than what I've documented so
far, that this is a RHL 6.0 'workstation' with SAMBA installed using RPM.

Hi!

I'm very inexperienced when it comes to Linux/Unix. However I managed to
install Linux and have the installation program recognize my ethernet
adapter. I could even use it to telnet another server. All of a sudden it
has stopped working. When I use netcfg I can see that the device is inactive
and it can't be activated. When linux shuts down it tries to stop the eth0
service, but it gives me an error saying that the device is unknown.

The only thing I can think of that might have caused problems is that I've
configured sound after the installation. I think the sound card is
configured correctly, but...?

What is the logical next step to try and solve this problem?

But those were all failed. What should I do?

Well, what I've done is simply make an account for the person but
disable their password.  Why not?  You own the box, right?

Pick whatever username you want their email name to be.  Then you
probably want to activate the POP server (or IMAP - depends on the
email client program and your preference) so they can pick up their
mail from some other computer.

Actually, RedHat has a program called userconf which allows you to set
up POP accounts.  Start it up and click on the "special accounts"
tab.  I've never used it, but I'm sure it works fine.

If you're using NTP, then you'll want to run "ntpdate" to set the date
prior to starting the ntpd daemon.

Not really. You can have several YP servers in the same NIS domain,
and they share account info (one master, the rest slaves), so it
wouldn't matter which one you connect to. You can have several
YP servers in different NIS domains, too. Your client then binds
to one (see man ypbind) in its NIS domain. In theory you could
probably switch your NIS domain and have ypbind find a new server,
in that domain, but I wouldn't recommend it. It really isn't intended
for that kind of dynamic domain-switching.

Hi,

I have now connected NT to linux.

The problem was my Edimax card on my linux box
although being a DEC chip and detected by the 
kernel it failed to navigate the TCP/IP.

When I replaced the card with a 3C905B-Tx 10/100
it worked fine no problems.

I did'nt change any networking settings just removed
the old card and replaced it with the 3Com card.

All those edimax users Windows to Windows apps
work fine its just that linux to windows fails
to work.

I would like to thank all that helped me and assisted
me in my attemps to get the old card working.
Dispite the problems I have learned a great deal from
the problems encounted, that I would have otherwise have
missed out on.

Check your mtu (maximum Transmission Unit) in your PPP setup.  The
smaller it is, the more responsive it will be, but the slower your
downloads will be.

Subject: Installing Networking and NIC

When I originally installed RedHat Linux 5.2, I was not connected to a
network, nor did I have a NIC.

In the installation program, therefore, I opted out of networking
installation.

How can I get back to that particular section of networking installation
from the install routine. I am using an Intel NIC, and I recall that the
installation had these drivers. I downloaded Becker drivers and compiled
them successfully, but I'd like to get the full networking package
installed.

In other words, I'm kind of lazy and as long as Linux install procedure
would set up certain parameters, I prefer to go this route.
