I am using a dialup box with SuSE 5.3 / Linux 2.0.35 Kernel, diald and
sendmail. I have configured the thing to use genericstable /
virtusertable to map the local usernames to that of my mail account
which I poll with fetchmail.
Now, sometimes the local usernames get replaced and sometimes
no. What might me the reason for this?

Subject: Re: ftp server problems- Unable to load Interpreter,
Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 00:28:20 GMT
Actually, on closer inspection, I am not (generally) running out of
memory. In fact, I often have 150MB or more of RAM free.
I am running RedHat 5.2. Is the ftp server included with it capable of
doing thousands of connections at once? I have found some info on wu-
ftp. Is this the same as what RedHat uses?
I am used to using Slackware, so I am having a little trouble setting
up and finding things on my RedHat box (d'oh) but we won't go there...
Thanks,
Will

If it's anything like the XM, it's an AMD Lance chipset, on IRQ5 DMA5. If
you select "AMD Lance and PCNet" when configuring your kernel, and make
sure nothing else is on IRQ5, you shouldn't have any problems.
Just to make sure, check your BIOS settings to verify whether you can
change the IRQ and DMA settings and, if so, what they are currently set to.

Sounds like you could have a Winmodem.

Of course, they could have bought a machine with a slightly slower
processor and saved a lot more money in the bargain, but system and/or
CPU manufacturers have less interest in emphasizing that fact.

Not to mention that the computations involved (DSP) are handled very
efficiently by inexpensive dedicated circuitry, but general purpose
CPU's are a lot less efficient handling that kind of stuff.

Subject: Named and diald problem
Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 10:12:51 GMT
Hi everyone!
I've got a little problem I can't figure out myself.
I'll explain my setup first. I've got 2 computers running Win95&98. Now I want
to set up a Linux box (RH 5) as a dial-on-demand internet router/firewall.
That works fine, except for one thing.
I have named running on the linuxbox for my local domain and want it to
connect to some root-server if it's asked for a name that it doesn't know.
Diald should make the connect then. (In other words; if _I_ type some URL
that's not on my local net, I want diald to connect to the internet so named
can look it up for me).
Well, that works too, but the problem is, named sometimes connects to the net
by itself (to do some syncing or something like that, I think). But I don't
want it to do that. It should only go to the root-servers when I want a name
looked up, not by itself.
I tried the solution in the mini-Howto (2 root-cache-files, one for on- and
one for offline lookups), but that doesn't work, because when the offline file
is in place, it just says it can't find the host, so I must do something else
first, like a ping to a host on the net or something to get diald to connect.
And it's also IMHO imperative that named runs locally, and that I not use my
ISP's DNS, because then the browsers time-out before diald gets the connection
up, and I don't want to press reload all the time.
Well, I hope I made my problem clear, and I hope someone out there can help
me.
Thanks in advance,
Tim.

I just installed Caldera OL 2.2. - naturally nothing went right with
its Lizard install so I used the older Lisa method and got a
bassically working box, except thta I can't get my network working.
Eth0 didn't initially install so I added it with ifconfig. I couldn't
ping the rest of my home LAN or my Internet gateway (I have this
machine and a RH 5.2 box connected to DSSL through a hub and then a
bridge. I was getting the mesage "SIOCADDRT: network unreachable" I
noted that nothing but the lo interface was in the routing table so I
tried to add a static route to the RH 5.2 box. I continue to get the
same SIOCADDRT: network is unreachable error whenever I try to add the
static route or a default route to the gateway address. Any
suggestions?

It looks like you're not negotiating your IP anymore, but demanding that
the ISP gives you the 192.168.53.1 IP, which is useless on the net.

I doubt it has a thing to do with your ISP's changes: if so, it was an
accident waiting to happen -- you shouldn't be requesting IP numbers you
don't want. Perhaps their old system allowed you to do that and ignored
you, but certainly the current one does the proper thing and tells you
to come up with a proper IP number.
Add 'noipdefault' to your PPP options and pppd will negotiate for an IP
instead of demanding one that it shouldn't use.

My quick guess is because 172.20.x.x is not a private network address
but a valid internet ready IP. Try something in the 172.16.x.x subnet.

You have the answer yourself. Your script must not supply the
HTTP/1.0 line. Your CGI script supplies only headers; you are
right that header order isn't significant, but the HTTP/1.0 line
is NOT a header!

Subject: "Malformed header" error: Apache/Linux
Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 18:28:00 -0500
I'm doing a simple CGI script and am getting a "Malformed header" error
if I include an "HTTP/1.0..." line. The platform is Apache 1.3.2 on
Red Hat Linux 5.2. The script looks like this:
printf("Content-type: text/html\r\n");
printf("HTTP/1.0 200 OK\r\n");
printf("MIME-version: 1.0\r\n");
printf("Server: SRVPROJ 2.0\r\n");
printf("Pragma: no-cache\r\n");
printf("\r\n");
printf("<HTML> <BODY>\n");
printf("Welcome to the big website\n");
printf("</BODY> </HTML>\n");
If I remove the line "HTTP/1.0...", no error. The sequence of the
header lines is not significant (that's consistent with the CGI spec).
If I use Perl, the results are the same.
Hope someone knows the answer.

It looks like your printcap is right. The files should get spooled under
whatever directory you set sd= to in the printcap file. Did you really
see the files right under /var/spool/lpd? If so, something's wrong.
Did you set owner and rights on the printer7 directory you made? Check
the printing HOWTO, but I think chown root:lp, chmod 770 is good.
Doesn't lpc say anything else, like "waiting for remote printer to be
ready" or something?
Remote lpd problems can be very tough to solve because there isn't much
feedback, but check the syslogd log files, and make sure the SCO system
really runs an lpd (netstat -a shows port 515/printer listening).

Hello,
yes, HiSax is it;
- go and fetch the latest kernel patches for isdn from
ftp.suse.com/pub/isdn4linux (from memory - hope address is right)
- patch the kernel by ./std2kern -d and recompile and run the new kernel
- go and fetch the latest utilities from the same place ; compile them
- have a look at README.HiSax (after having patched it can be found
in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/isdn/)
- loading the driver is like
modprobe hisax type=11 protocol=2 (???)
Oh, I don't know the protocol that is used in your area...
but 2 should do it; the number for "type" is
taken from that README.HiSax;
- setting up the interface(s) requires ifconfig, route and several
isdnctrl commands; for that have a look at
http://www.rosat.mpe-garching.mpg.de/~web/ISDN.html (some instruction
sets are in english, some are not)
or
http://sites.inka.de/picard/rh52_isdn.html
or
http://terminator.net/
- feel free to ask your questions at de.alt.comm.isdn4linux
in english language: almost everybody there understands english;
a different question is if they can resolve right your special problems...
Good luck, Juergen.
