Having got the same problem, I tried to take a look.
Thinks - better copy the file, before risking altering it.....
how do I copy a file in Linux?
]# man copy
no entry for copy
]# man cpy
no entry for cpy
Thinks -- there used to be a move command in unix and xenix, may be a
cross reference will help
man move
no entry for move
Thinks - wasn't it spelled mve
man mve
no entry for mve
Thinks .. might it me mv
man mv
a page appears.....and tells me the documentation is no longer
being maintained. No xref to other related commands. No help at all.
Now to close MAN...
Esc - ignored
Return - ignored
Ctrl-C - (END) lights up
E - Ignored
? - No previous regular expression - Press RETURN
????? WTF
Ctrl-D - Ignored
F1 - Ignored
Ctrl-Z - [1]+ Stopped man nv
Return
Success!
Hmm - doesn't look like the "proper" way to do it though.
OK, my experience of Linux is limited to non-existant. I'm a complete
Newbie.
I used, many years ago, to rebuild xenix kernels. I used to tweak that
O/S to get it to work well on 386/16s (remember them?). 10 years before
that I was programming mainframes in assembler. With 27 years in the
industry I am not your typical computer phobic newbie. But....
... something like the above happens EVERY time I try to do ANYTHING
with Linux.
How does one get started, without having a local guru to start you off?
How does one instal a LAN card that is NE2000 compat and not recognised?
How does one copy a file
I have heard about the HOWTO pages. How does one find the HOWTO pages?
The Red hat 5.2 manual says
zless 3Dfx-HOWTO.gz (easy to guess or what).
But this says "no such file" or some such, and now I have touched
something and got that (END) in reverse up again. Ctrl-Z - Return works
here to. Hey - I'm leaning all the time :)
I guess I didn't load them on the install. How do I now load the HOWTOs
from the CD?
OH no. Here we go again.

Ian Hobson (feeling more sympathy than usual with novices)

Hi,
When I want to connect to my isp, chat complain:
chat[662]: can't get terminal parameters: Inappropriate ioctl for
device.
Now, when I use xisp or minicom all goes well, only chat can't connect.
In my ppp-on script I call pppd like
exec /usr/sbin/pppd debug lock modem asyncmap 0 crtscts /dev/cua1 38400\
noipdefault defaultroute connect $DIALER_SCRIPT
/dev/cua1 is:
crw-r----- 1 root uucp 5, 65 31 Dec 1979 /dev/cua1
I have RedHat 5.0 with ppp-2.3.3-2
Can somebody help?
Thanks

You can't use Charter Cables Pipeline service with Linux...
Unless maybe they have both way communicaton and you can get the external ver
of the USRobotics cable modem.... The 3com VSP cable modems will not work
under linux...

So you are having problems with linux. Well everyone has been there,
so now lets get down to business. Well first of all you can put the
insmod say in the /etc/rc.d/init.d/network file. Some of my friends do
that. But I don't. Instead I put a single entry for the same reltech
card in my /etc/conf.modules like so:
alias eth0 rtl8139
hopefully you system is setup and enabled to load modules. And if you
correctly configured your ethernet settings. Then everything should work
from bootup.

Cable works great with Linux. It's part of a service offered by the cable
company. See if it's available on *your* street.... You probably
shouldn't buy a cable modem (>US$500.00) and pretty much unique to each
isp/cable company. It connects to your box via an ethernet adapter.
Linux works with many ethernet adapters (aka: nic). You can have more than
one nic. You can use the second nic to connect your local network to the
computer with the cable connection and have this one route all traffic to
and from the internet via the cable connection.......

Big Brother is not really a problem right now. It works fine, it's a done deal for
the departement.
But other want to take a look at the big picture using HP openview.
I got ucd to work properly. Reports the proper values and even changed the code to
include memory percentage (includes avail swap + avail mem / total mem + total swap).
This works fine.
Now my trouble is to get traps to work properly. HOW DO I setup traps in the
snmpd.conf file and that it reports with different severity code (if possible)
depending on the status of the variable to trap
Thanks in advance....

as86 is a compiler command not a file in your system .
it means that the file that is to be compiled is an assm objet file , and
to route
bootsect.o through the assebler rather than GCC ( c compiler )
