If you're using IP Masquerading, then it's recommended that you leave
mtu and mru at 1500.

Does dmesg report any problems with eth1?

Why don't you try and get connection with your LAN through eth1?
Copy /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 to a temporary file, and
copy /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 to
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1.
Type "#ifup eth1" and try to acces your lan.
Succes? -> your NIC is working properly on Linux.

Shouldn't "GATEWAY" be the gateway of your ISP?

Both cards are assigned to the same subnet (255.255.255.0), is this
correct?
 
I don't know how @home or your cable modem works or should be
configured, but I do know I had about the same problems when I tried to
hook up my (com21) modem to the cable network using 2 NIC's.
Turned out to be an interrupt problem :-)

HOWTO surfaced (the choice between ease of maintenance and
performance).  Has anyone measured the speed of various ipchain
styles?

It looks like jumps are pretty cheap in small quantities but
could get expensive in volume, and logging pretty expensive in
general, so I was thinking of benchmarking variations, which
led to wondering if anyone else already has . . .

Nearly all of them do. But they dont let u retrieve te info from the dial-in
server, but the dial-in router asks the radius for permission to let a user
dial in.

I think Squid will do what you need.  It's an http proxy server, and
you should be able to configure it to disallow certain sites, or only
allow certain sites, etc. and probably monitor what's actually
visited.  The URL is squid.nlanr.net

i am puzzled over ip aliasing.
i set up another ip on eth0 as follows:

ifconfig ifconfig eth0:0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
route add -host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx dev eth0:0

ok, i can ping new ip address locally and from outside and it works.
only... it does not show up in ifconfig list. there is just eth0 but not
the alias i just created. that somewhat troubles me. i am using rh52,
2.2.2. am i missing here something or just doing something plain wrong?

I read the /usr/doc/HOWTO/mini/Cable-Modem mini howto, and there are a few
different ways
that cable modem systems are designed.
You might want to read that mini howto.
You might want to tell us which cable system you are using.

Hi ! I just installed RH6.0 and cannot get networking to work. I am
experiencing the same problem with two different ethernet cards, but I
don't know how to lacte it. Here is the deal:

1) both cards (Intel Ether Express Pro/10+ and 3Com 3C900 Boomerang) are
detected at boot time

2) If I do ifconfig eth0 this is what I get (with the 3Com card)

(the last line takes several minutes to appear on the screen)

4) ping localhost works, but ping XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX does not; telnet

5) Host names are not resolved, even though the file /etc/resolv.conf
contains all the info needed).

Any hint as to where the problem may lie ? The same system with RH5.2
worked without any problem...

I've recently got Diamond SupraExpress 336V modem which has this annoying
feature of hanging up if theres nothing happening in the line for about 20
seconds. I know this is a feature but havent found a way to disable it. So
could someone give me the AT command to kill this feature?

I'm trying to use the lance drivers to get Linux running on an HP425SX
diskless workstation made by HP. It's based on a 486 processor, and
includes
a 79C960 on-board network adapter. It's *not* a Vectra.

The LANCE drivers (drivers/net/lance.c) assume that anything:
- with an HP BIOS
- and on-board ethernet hardware
must be a Vectra. So, instead of probing for the base, IRQ, etc it
just pull the values out of the BIOS (and gets garbage, in my case)
and uses those.

Ideally, a better solution would be to use these values to test for the
hardware and if it doesn't initialize properly then fallback to 
probing.

But I wanted to ask for feedback here before approaching the maintainers
in case I've completely mis-read the source.

The key section appears around line 568:
    } else if (hpJ2405A) {

If I break lance.c at this point (so that it fails to see my hardware as
a
hpJ2405A) it will instead initialize the card through probing, and
everything
will run properly.

Of course, my fix breaks the driver for everyone else (maybe?), so
perhaps
there is something better?

ok here's the deal...

i can play cd's in X without even mounting the cdrom. i just put a cd in and
and hit play and it works fine. but here's the problem. the first time i
mounted my cdrom using, "mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom", it worked
great! and then when i was done and wanted to put i different cd in i just
typed, "umount /dev/cdrom" or i guess "umount /dev/hdc" would work too. but
anyway, after i unmounted that cd i couldn't mount another one! i've try'd
mounting it every way i've read to, with no luck. so i just gave up and
completely reinstalled linux.

BTW: i'm using redhat 6.0 if it matters... and i don't know exactly what
kernel no. at the moment. (sorry)

so anyway, i reinstalled linux and sure enough... it mounted and unmounted
fine but after that i couldn't get it to mount anything!! not even after
rebooting!! ANY IDEAS?? i'd greatly appreciate ANY help!! i'm new to this
and i'm trying to lrean this crap the hard way. THANX

When I try to query my modem or connect to my ISP with KPPP I get an
error message saying 'sorry, the modem is busy' I am running suse6.1
with KDE 1.1. I have a supra express ISAPNP modem. It is set in pnp mode
and works fine under Windows and BeOS.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you.  I'm new to this and wanted to make sure I wasn't screwing
up.  My use of 192.168.0.1 falls within those parameters.

Hi there,

This question will probably reveal my vast ignorance about all things
networked - but here goes!  I've setup my pppd connection to my ISP and
everything appears great - www, news,email etc.  However the connection
frequently stalls whilst pulling web pages / file transfers - is this
something I have any control over or is it totally the 'fault' of my
ISP?  It always comes back and resumes downloading a few seconds later -
its just a little annoying.

Try to ping your nameserver or cbs.com, if it does not check your
nameserver. Then you have a DNS problem.

The version of pump supplied with 6.0 does not work with roadrunner. At
least I have found this to be so. The updated version does work. You can
either get the updated version of pump or edit '/etc/resolv.conf'. I bet
if you look at /etc/resolv.conf you won't see your nameservers, only the
word search. Hope this helps.

DENY just ignore the packet, REJECT sends a icmp telling that the host is
unreacheable.
I prefer REJECT , it's more "friendly"
Depends how much you hate other hosts!!!!
I don't hate anyone, so prefer to tell them I'm unreacheable.
