Subject: Howto get External ISDN TA working with PPP
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 16:29:51 +0200
Hello,
I bought an external ISDN TA because the word was(is) this works like a
modem and Linux should be able to cope with that.
I tried connecting using Kppp and Wvdial as frontends (easy setup). A normal
modem isn't a problem at all with any of these frontends.
But ....
When i try to connect using the ISDN TA the dial-up is started but times out
after about <=1 minute.
I configured the TA with some AT commands which work fine in Windows.
It looks like pppd has problems (authentication ??)
At this point i really don't have a clue where to look for.
Any help will be welcome !

Hi all,
I have a performance problem between a Linux PC with a PCI RTL8139 10/100 MB
Ethernet card and a IBM RS/6000 with a 10MB Ethernet card. Both connected by
a UTP-cross cable.
The PC detects the 10MBit max speed and half-duplex, nevertheless I have a
network speed of max 30kByte measured with ftp.
Any tips welcome

http://www.irc.org or your closest mirror ... the latest version needs some
adjustments to compile with glibc-2.1.1pre(#) but the older one, 8.1.2 is fine.

Your chat script needs fixing. Here you send things, ogin: and assword:,
that need to be "expects" in the chat expect/sends. Actually you
can also remove the scripted login/password and configure for PAP as
suggest by another reply. In fact you may well _have_ to do PAP or
CHAP authentication.

I have a problem with my PPP connection. I only can go online as root.
I have made other users and I have set that other users can activate
the ppp connection. But this doesn't work.
Where must I modify something to change this so that other users than
root can go online too.

Hi there. I am trying to run a little network with my two computers (peer to

I am using SuSE Linux 6.0 on both mashines. The network cards are recognized
by the kernel (I think so). I am using the tulip driver with the "options=0"
parameter. My problem is that I cant even ping the other mashine. I already
read the net-howto but that didn't solve my problem either. Please help!!!!

I used RH6 to do a complete install and during initialisation I set it to
configure dhcp for RoadRunner. It worked first time and all I needed
to add was a default gateway route to the routing table. Use linux-conf
for this.

If you want to change Adapter mac Address you must configure a Local
Administered Address (LAA) instead of Universal Administered Address (UAA)
that is the address that are burned-in the NIC. To put LAA you must
configure in the NIC driver. According whit IEEE valid range of LAA are from
4000.0000.0000 to 7FFF.FFFF.FFFF (MAC are in IEEE notation, not Ethernet
II). I am not sure about upper level range, but I am sure that all address
begining by 4xxx.xxxx.xxxx are good, and probably this is enough for you.
You can put two card whit the same MAC address using one of the range
reserved for LAA. Consult your driver documentation configuration in order
to make this change. Be sure to connect NICs whit same MAC in differents
logical (no bridging between two segments, only Level 3 routing) and
physical segments. Be sure that your black box is realy a hub and not an
ethernet switch (then this is probably an Ethernet bridge).
What kind of router are you using? Several routers like CISCO can manipulate
ARP aging. You can low this age to severa seconds.

Make sure the interrupt and io address for the NIC are correct under 98.
Since it works
under Linux, just do an 'ifconfig eth0' to see what it is, then go to
control panel->network->adpator->properties->resources to make sure 98 is
the same.
Especially if you turned of PnP to get Linux to work.

Sounds like the admin must work at being obtuse. If he's worried about
security then he should take direct measures to close breaches rather
than try to hide them. You can *try* this with each subnet you need:
/sbin/route add X.Y.Z.0 eth0
Or better:
/sbin/route add default eth0
which should send everything not local to the eth0 interface too.

any packet. i have configured the ip forwarding, and inserted an "1"

Hi.
Picked this up through goverment surplus. Very cheap.
Just for "playing around". I do know about networking (house wired
with ethernet, 6 pcs connected through house and internet gateway
...bla...bla...) I work as a electronics tech and have a ham radio
license...I am looking for manuals, info or software that go with
these...if you can tell me it's worth it...
All units "light up" and seem to pass "self-test" and look
functionnal...
1- Synoptics Communications Lattisnet (Hub?) model 2530 Concentrator
Looks like a "standard" ethernet hub with 8 rj-45 connectors. Nothing
fancy. Can somebody confirm this....Does anybody know more about this?
2-BICC DATA NETWORKS ISOLAN FAN-OUT...
Looks like something to connect ethernet to RS-232??? Drawing on front
of box shows the setup that this box is connect between a transceiver
and then to some dte equipement...several DB15 connectors in back
3-DATACO Scandinavian Data Corporation Local ISO 8473 Router
I imagine this is a router. Unit has 2 DB15 ports in back and a db23
port....db15 ports have written : ethernet phy add. 000080b2aa00
and other 000080b3aa00...I imagine the db23 is for communicating
with the box...???
Thanks a lot for reading!!!

1. You cannot setup a MS-CHAP (or CHAP) PPP account using Linuxconf
(which uses the redhatppp module).
2. If your NT RAS server is a PDC, you can just enter the username,
password, DNS server(s), and phonenumber in kppp, and choose "CHAP
authentication".
3. If your NT RAS server is not a PDC, then you must edit
/etc/ppp/chap-secrets and /etc/ppp/options manually.
4. If you are using chat to dial, the script is nothing more than:
chat "" ATDT5551212 CONNECT
since it only needs to dial the Windows NT server and get the
telephone to return a connected status.

We would need the output of 'ifconfig ' and either route -n or netstat -nr
to really answer your question.
Ifconfig will tell you if the interface (NIC) is setup. Route or netstat
will tell you if there is a route to the other box.

You need a route between the two subnets. ie:
on helena - route add -net 195.112.nn.0 dev eth0
and a return route on homer - route add -net 128.178.nn.0 eth0
man route is your friend.
