Hellow Linux-Experts !
In our company we expanded and now bought
40 extra personal computers,
we didn't buy the OS yet because we are
not sure yet to buy a M$-OS...
In 90% of this PC's, we only need a simple
terminalemulation towards an AS/400 & RS/6000.
40 times windows95 + 40 time rumba (commercial 5250 emul)
= A LOT OF MONEY.....
We are wondering..... why not :
Put Linux on the PCs, and use a 5250 terminal emulation ?
Suggestions are GREATLY appreciated !
Thanks!

ALL : ALL
I'm assuming that you're intention is to limit incoming traffic from
anywhere to the box, and then allow specific things via hosts.allow?
The above would only disallow to leafnode. Though that could be what
you want, of course.

No, but if you remove the * it should work. Or you can specify a subnet.
As in
leafnode : 192.168.0.
leafnode : 207.203.5.0/255.255.255.0

You might try to use a different interrupt, since 9 is used to redirect
interrupt for the
2nd interrupt conttroller to the 1st via IRQ 2. Try 5, 10, or 11. This
can usually
be set in the BIOS.

Don't you mean x = 0 and x = 255? The network is 0 and 255 for
broadcast. 1 is often the router.

You can make your own, as others have mentioned or buy one for $5 -
$10. Some people have created a two port "hub" from a dual RJ45 jack.
Just cross the pairs in it.

Give:
ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.0.0/16 -d 192.168.0.0/16 -j ACCEPT
ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.0.0/16 -d 0.0.0.0/0 -j MASQ
a shot. (The default policy should be DENY.)
The first rule says that if it comes in locally, and is destined
for a local network, forward it; the second says if it comes in locally
and is destined for anywhere else, masquerade it.
Not that you should configure input filters on the eth0 interface
to keep stuff from 192.168.0.0/16 from coming _in_. Those WILL be
spoofed packets as "private" network addresses should not transit the
Internet. Also, as a good neighbour, you should set up rules to keep
your system from transmitting private network address _out_ through
eth0 and block DHCP and BOOTP from leaving as well.
Cheers.

This activity just validates Linux. I'm sure this group is more about
marketing (or anti-marketing) than about truly evaluating Linux technically.
The Mindcraft episode was probably just the beginning. Unfortunately the
Linux community isn't very experienced in dealing with the market, or
marketing. I would hope in the future, the distributions or some other
group (commercial or otherwise) deals with the attacks. To have core
developers directly engage in this will only distract the future
improvements of Linux, which plays further to M$ goals.

First make SURE you have installed Ftp server ANDanonftp.x.rpm (its on
the cd) , then its more or less automatic. Normal install only gives
you ftp CLIENT service, nit the server.

Well, I do a little Web page designing and I have my network set up
as Linux server / Win98 client. I use Frontpage and Dreamweaver for
html'ing, but these sometimes leave pathing errors in links a such
that are impossibke to find (well pretty hard anyways) because after
you upload the files to the ISP and call them on browser everything
looks fine because the mis-linked files actually exist on your machine
and thus the page looks andf acts fine. Also same prob testing the
perl/cgi scripting. SOLUTION: build a mirror image of the users dirs
of the ISP on your linux box, send pages there and call them with your
browser. Voila' errors show immediately <G>

Your "control case" isn't very good because it differs in three
different ways from the case you're trying to make work -- different
client, different OS, different machine.
Try these tests on the machine on which you are trying to run XRN:
1) "telnet nntp.ix.netcom.com nntp". Do you successfully get a
connection to the NNTP server (if so, type "quit" to exit from it).
2) Configure Netscape to use nntp.ix.netcom.com as your News server,
and then try to open a News URL in Netscape (e.g.,
"news:comp.os.linux.networking") and see if it works.
Does your News server require username/password authentication? If so,
have you configured XRN to provide it? See the documentation for the
"-authenticator" command-line option / X resource in the XRN man page.

In trying to upgrade COL 1.3 Samba from 1.9.18p8 to 2.0.3 suddenly I am no
longer able to login as root. I've tried resetting the root passwd, and
can su to root, but this way, I can't even pick up root's mail....
Meanwhile, the upgrade of samba did not appear to complete. Some things
are installed, like swat, but smbd -v returns "1.9.18p8". I tried setting
"Unix Password Sync" to Yes in global swat properties and resetting the
smbpasswd and passwd but that didn't fix the root login. I also tried
removing the root: line from shadow and passwd files directly and
resetting, no dice.
Help, please, I'm at a loss to fix this, I don't know what the attempted
upgrade has changed, nor how to chage it back.
Samba upgrade went like this:
smbd stop
nmbd stop
cd ../samba-2.0.3/source/
./configure
make
make install
make clean
<no error reports>
