I installed the HL server and am trying to start it up, but I receive
the following error:
WARNING: UDP_OpenSocket: bind: Address already in use
Error Couldn't allocate dedicated server IP port
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
All my internet apps seem to work fine. I installed Apache, and it
works fines. I killed the Apache process just in case it was
interfering. Didn't help. I know my address is unique.
Any ideas?!

Has anyone been able to get this to work, without shelling out $50? I'm
running Redhat 5.2 kernel 2.0.36. I've tried opening the ports in
Microsoft's KB articles, no luck.

Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 02:13:16 GMT
I have 3 systems all connected together through a 10mbit coax connection, 2
are running win98 and the other, redhat 5.2. What I want to do is use a
proxy server (wingate) on the win98 system that will allow the other win98
machine and the linux box to access the cable modem. The cable modem is on
connected to its own network card leaving the other network card in the same
computer to communicate with the others. Can I make the linux box use the
connection and use proxies to access the outside world? Has this been done,
or does my set-up need to be reconfigured? I know this is probably a very
lame question but I'm a newbie and I do learn quick :).

Hello!
I don't think you can setup real test with ISDN (unless you have ability to
dial another ISDN site with private IPs).
But I think you can setup one more private network with other IPs then
yours, put two cards in your Linux machine, configure one card with local
address, another one with new address from that 'fake' network. Also you can
put a couple of machines via hub on that new test network (web, mail, ftp
servers).
Then see if you can access new network from your local net.
Good luck!

Yes. A Deja News search (http://www.dejanews.com/) will cut those
4000 messages down to size, and even correlate them for you.
Otherwise, read the HOWTO documents (ISP-Hookup-HOWTO, PPP-HOWTO,
etc.) to get an idea of how to set up your connection to your ISP.

Subject: PCI ethernet card not getting the right IRQ
Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 01:16:29 -0500
I've got a Realtek 8029AS nic card that is supposed to work fine with Linux.
The problem seems to be that the card is being given IRQ 0 when the machine
boots (apparently by the bios somewhere). I've checked the card with a
dos-based diagnostic program that came with it and it reports the card as
being set to IRQ 11... which should be right from having used it before.
But when I do an 'ipconfig eth0' or any other command to check the IRQ..
there's no IRQ shown at all. 'dmesg' reports that the card was given IRQ 0
by the card bios at boot time and I should use the diagnostic program to
change that to a valid..useable.. IRQ. But if the diagnostic shows IRQ 11...
why is it getting '0' when booting to Linux?
Is there anything in an init file somewhere I can change to have the system
look for the card on IRQ 11? Is that possible?
Thanks greatly..

Hello!
Check your /etc/resolv.conf for search line, you should put in there all
domains in which you don't want to use full names.
Example:
Let's say I'm in domain somedom.com, /etc/resolv.conf
search somedom.com
nameserver 111.111.111.111
Good luck!

Also you can check out a product that allows you to run asp pages on Apache

What then, is the point of the "Chap Secrets" page in Linuxconf?
Also, I have a username & password "for the RAS server" as well as a
different username and password for the NT domain. Which is considered
the chap secret?
Thanks for the info,

I am attempting to integrate Linux 6.o in a workstation mode with
Windows NT 4.0, and wish to authenticate users from account databases
located across several NT Server domains. How is this accomplished?
Specifically, and in great detail? I have read several books on Samba
and NFS, but they're mostly pointless generalizations, or completely
irrelevant examples based on Linux server roles. Has this been
successfully accomplished on a large scale before?

Hi,
I'm attemping to get get a firewall up and running so I can IP masq
without fear. I've gone to rlz.ne.mediaone.net and used the firewall
creation tool. I'm using IP chains and pump not dhcpcd (I'm using
Redhat 6.) I went and removed the section IP address defined by dhcpc
and put a variable ipaddress="24.etc...." to get it to work for the time
being. I then went through the whole thing and hand edited the extra
spaces and other junk. When I type sh /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall (the name
and local of my firewall script) at the command shell all I get is a
bunch of error messages command not found and invalid etc.... I've
checked everything out and it all seems to be ok. What could be the
problem? Maybe I'm not creating the script correctly? Maybe sh
/etc/rc.d/rc.firewall/ isn't the command I type to run the script???

You configure for PAP authentication by editing /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
and inserting the line:
YourUserName * YourPassword
and adding the pppd option name YourUserName , with the obvious
substitutions.
You configure for CHAP the same way except using /etc/ppp/chap-secrets .
The chat login/password scripting can then almost certainly be removed,
and your CONNECT '' replaced by CONNECT '\dc\' to avoid possibly
confusing the ISP.

Hello,
Looks like you are looking for a termserver.........big
bucks new ( http://www.lantronix.com ) but you may be able to find some old
DEC servers (200, 200MC, 300, maybe a 700 if you are lucky) for a reasonable
price......but I've never used them with Linux (not sure how you could control
them; we use ours with a VAX system running VMS).
Termservers really aren't like print servers (which are really just a
parallel/serial port, CPU and ethernet card rolled into one).

Subject: Linux wont initialize nic upon bootup (sometimes)
Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 07:43:05 GMT
Hi,
I had a p166 system running linux 1.2.8 which I upgraded to linux
2.0.36. I also upgraded libc to libc5.4.46, gcc to 2.8.1, libstdc++ to
2.8.1, binutils to 2.9.1.0.19a and then installed netkit-base-0.10. It
is then that I noticed the problems.
I have 2 problems. The first one is when I reboot the computer, linux
will not initialize the network card. I can't ping to or out of the
machine. I have to shutdown linux, turn the machine off and then turn
it back on. What could be the problem?
The syslog portion about the NIC when it is working fine as:
<snip>
May 24 08:49:30 lhr kernel: smc-ultra.c:v2.02 2/3/98 Donald Becker
([EMAIL PROTECTED])
May 24 08:49:30 lhr kernel: eth0: SMC EtherEZ at 0x240, 00 00 C0 F9 5D
E2,EEPROM IRQ 3 programmed-I/O mode
<snip>
My second problem is that the NIC performance seems very slow on the
network. I did some file transefers between this computer and another.
Both running same version of linux. A 2 MB file took 10 mins to ftp
from the second machine to this one! Suprisingly, if I ftp the same
file from this machine to the second one, it transfers within a few
seconds. Where is the problem?
Thanks for help.

Confusingly, 3com make a 3c509 and 3c905! The 509 has been around for
a long time now and is a good solid card with good support. The 905 is
a 100 Mbit card and is much newer. I don't use either myself.

Jack -
I tried checking /etc/conf.modules as
Dmitry V. Ketov" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> suggested on Mon, 24 May 1999:

I looked at conf.modules and it had the module specified twice in a
funny way.
I made the changes as he specified above (my card is at IRQ 11, io
0x230) per softset,
and I also changed back to using the kernel/module combo (rather then
having the code in the kernel.)
The card was detected when I rebooted and is now working.
Must have been that something messed up conf.modules so it tried to load
the module twice,
and that hung the machine.
Good fortune,

Thanks. I did not realize that 'make bzImage' was an alternate to 'make
boot'. I was looking for a file or a command 'bzImage'.
