Subject: Get my Linux box on Net!!!!!!! - PPP problems
Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 21:06:36 +0100
Help,
please help me to further my 11 month love affair with Linux by getting my
box on the Net. I have just finished University for the year and would
really like to use linux to get upto speed in such things as Oracle 8, C++
and Java. All this is being hampered because when I need Net info, I have to
reboot in WINDOZE.
I have a Diamond 56i ISA modem (NOT a winmodem). It will dial out O.K.
(tested under minicom) but using the scripts I have knocked together the
line just drops after 1-2 mins. HELP ME. I am desperate. Below is a sample
of my /var/log/message file.
P.S. Does anyone understand the expressions:-
Not eight bit clean
All 7th bit set to zero

Reboot? For a change so trivial? Just run /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart
(Or if you want to know how things really work,
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward)

Here's what happens.
I restart the inet daemon and everything runs fine for a little while.
Maybe ten minutes. Then wu.ftpd, which is started by inetd, crashes. It
gives me the following error.
May 25 12:55:29 ftp inetd[60]: ftp/tcp server failing (looping), service
terminated
Inetd continues to run fine because I can telnet on. The box has been
running fine for months without any problems or changes and then today it
started this. Any thoughts or advice?

Try the following entry below the one above in /etc/hosts:
166.84.197.169 terrier
and see what happens next time you boot.

For cross-platform work like this, try VNC -
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc
As far as I know, there's nothing under Linux that works directly with
PCAnywhere on a Micros~1 box, but with VNC you can accomplish basically
the same thing.

Hmmm... turns out POP and IMAP are already there. But not doing their
job. ( How can you configure them-- where is documentation for them?)
They were installed by default when Linux (RH5.1) was first installed.
>From the client I tried to read the mail that's on the server 3
different ways:
1) Outlook Express under windows98 (tries to talk to POP)
2) fetchmail under linux (tries IMAP, then tries POP)
3) Pine under linux (tries to talk to IMAP)
All the conversations fail (the last 4 packets exchanged follow just
the same pattern) and the mail client software reports some error,
citing a timeout, socket, or other error.
The details (packet capture using tcpdump, plus error message info)
from all 3 attempts is below.
Can anybody see more here than I can? Who has done this before--
succeeded in reading the mail that's on a linux machine, from another
workstation on the LAN? If anybody has, how did you do it?
========================================================================
DETAIL PACKET DUMPS AND ERROR MESSAGES
1) WITH OUTLOOK EXPRESS AS CLIENT
tcpdump log recorded by my-mailserver-machine
when Outlook Express under Windows 98, running on
my-mailclient-machine, tries to receive user david's mail
useraccouts "david" exists on the server, Outlook is configured for an
account david at the server's IP address, told to find server on the
LAN
When Outlook is told to get david's mail, the packet ecxhange at
09:35:58 below occurs. After the 5-second pause, the 09:36:03 packet
exchange occurs and Outlook prints the following error message:
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible
causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long
period of inactivity. Account "david mail account at 192.168.3.1',

2) WITH FETCHMAIL AS CLIENT
tcpdump log recorded by my-mailserver-machine
when fetchmail, running on my-mailclient-machine, tries to fetch user
david's mail
useraccouts "david" exist on both machines and david is the logged-in
user who is running fetchmail on my-mailclient-machine
Upon launching fetchmail and answering its query for the password of
david@my-mailserver-machine, the packets below at 08:19:56 appear,
then there's a brief pause, after which the packets at 08:20:01 appear
and fetchmail displays:
fetchmail: socket error while fetching from my-mailserver machine
Another pause, followed by that error message again and the 08:20:07
packets. Fetchmail displays the additional message:
fetchmail: Query status=2
and quits.

3) WITH PINE AS CLIENT
tcpdump log recorded by my-mailserver-machine
