Has anyone got connected to RCN's cable modem? I am stuck and RCN don't support
linux.
The dhdcp gets the ip address, but the link light on the cable modem lights for
only a few seconds and then goes out.

Using RH5.2
        Any suggestions?

OK -- I see I didn't explain what I wanted very well... sorry about that.

What I'm, in effect, trying to do, BGP or similar. In the old days, to
allow for a reliable network, I'd go to Internic, get my /24 (MY /24) and
get two providers. I'd then use routing protocols to handle the routing of
my /24 onto whichever provider happenned to be better at the time. More
often that not, it would stay on a given provider "A". However, if provider
"A" failed, "B" would take over. A good thing.

Problem is:

- Today, just try to get a portable /24
- Try to get two providers to route for it

So, what I'd like to do is get TWO providers, each with their own /24 space,
to handle our "C". True, I could simply switch manually, and renumber all
hosts, but that gets ugly.

So, if the Cisco has enough horsepower to handle it, I thought I might be
able to use something like "blind NAT" to do the following:

- Provider "A" provides us a route for /24 100.100.10.*
- Provider "B" provides us a route for /24 194.12.5.*
- Our Cisco has a config file active most of the time that says, "translate
100.100.10.x into 10.0.0.x -- nothing more -- a simple IP change in both
directions"
- Should we lose provider "A", either automatically, or manaully, the Cisco
is told to now translate 194.12.5.* into 10.0.0.x again, by blind NAT.

Sure, it's ugly. But it means I can switch an entire LAN between address
spaces as needed. The question is:

- I believe the Cisco can do this simple address rewrite. It's not stock
NAT -- we want both inbound and outbound connections translated, little
else.
- If it can, can it handle the workload -- assume a single T-1's bandwidth.

Does anyone know if its possible to use netscape on Linux connected to a NT
server 4.0 running IIS4 and MS Proxy 2.0 to connect to the internet.?

And if so, could you point out a source of information on how to accomplish
this.

btw, my NT server is connected to the internet via adsl and works fine with
windows 98 that are connected to the NT server to access the internet.

I'm trying to use the command "ipfw" but I am getting nowhere.
The ip_masquerading HOWTO that I have says to issue this command:

        ipfw a m all from 10.0.0.1/24 to 0.0.0.0/0

But this is of no use what so ever ! I've tried several different command
options but I keep getting error messages; either "unknown keyword" or
"illegal protocal name". I've tried reading the man page for ipfw and the
"--help" argument for ipfw. But I have gotten absolutly nowhere !

I have a dos machine which I've given the address 10.0.0.1. And it is
connected to my Linux machine(which is a host on the Internet) via plip. To
use IP_Masquerading and give my dos machine access to the Internet.
What should the command line for ipfw look like ?

Hello!

I don't know if try this already but...

Go to preferences in Netscape, --> advance --> proxies --> manual proxy
configuration --> view, and enter ip address of your proxy server in there
folowed by port (default in MS proxy is 80).

But it only works for browsing web pages.

Good luck!

It depends on ver of ipfwadm, but I think you can try this:

If you want to use other services on the Internet from your Linux box, you
should look on http://support.microsoft.com/support and search for

We've been approached by a company called "Network Plus" which is offering
connectivity to the internet using DSL (Digital Subscriber Line). The
sales literature suggests a better bang for the buck than we're currently
getting from our dedicated frame relay (56k) line. (Total charges "appear"
to be about $170/month for 160K vs total of over $300/month we're now
paying to phone company and ISP for 56K connection.)

I haven't seen much written about this of late and don't recollect seeing
any discussion about this here.

If you have any thoughts/recommendations with regard to DSL in general or
to Network Plus in specific, I'd be interesting in hearing from you.
Bleeding edge technology is fascinating, but having "been there, done
that" I'd rather ask and hear the dirt first.

Hello!

There is a file /etc/sendmail.cw

All you need to do is list domain.com as an alias in that file for machine
xyz.domain.com.

Also if you want to masquerade xyz.domain.com to domain.com (so all the mail
sent from xyz will look like sent from @domain.com not from @xyz.domain.com)
you need to add domain.com to the DM variable in sendmail.cf. Just search
for DM.

Good luck!

Linux hangs when it detected the HD, i.e.

Could someone to help me on this problem? Linux is not very useful without

I am having the same problem on both systems of Intel/Linux and
Alpha/Linux. The error message reads as

fh_verify: ///permission failure, acc=3 error=13

and something similar but related to nfs-something.

I guess that it is not related to RedHat6.0. In my case,
it appears that it is related to the recent kernels, 2.2.8 and
2.2.9. It appears that it does no harm on the system. But,
certainly, it makes me quite nervous.

Unfortunately, I don't know more than that.

Thanks. The problems was that SuSE base/ standard install does NOT install the
PCMCIA package. Once I had installed it, everything was fine -- almost. I had
to edit the routing config files make sure the correct route was being loaded at

Hi,

I'm trying to get my DNS server running, and it's giving me serious
grief.

I have named.conf set up according to the HOWTO. There is the
0.0.127.in-addr.arpa zone, and my domain (ghelbig.com) zone.

The /var/named entries seem to be correct.

The server will start (with no warnings/errors), and say the zones
are loaded.

The server also says that it's listening. On 127.0.0.1:53 (lo) and
192.168.1.254:53 (eth0).

I can ping the zone (ghelbig.com) by name, that works.

If I put 127.0.0.1 in resolv.conf (as the nameserver), it works.
But if I put 192.168.1.254 as the nameserver, it times out. I can see
it trying to hit the port (the net activity light flashes), but I get
the message:

*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.1.254: No response from
server
*** Default servers are not available

And I can't for the life of me figure out what's going wrong.

Thanks in advance,
Gary

Hello!

Setup another in-addr.arpa zone for your 192.168.1 network and everything
should work just fine!

Whe you run nslookup with 182.168.1.254 as a default DNS it's trying to
resolve IP address to the DNS name and it can not!

Good luck!

www.aa.com resolves to 151.193.131.51. Is that anywhere close to what
your internet address would be? There might be a deny/reject rule that
denies any incoming packets over your internet connection with an
source address close to you ip. Maybe you specified subnet? Hand-pick
over your ruleset to see which rules might be the culprit. Also if you
haven't already, add the -o option to all of your denies. That will
log them so you can go to your /var/log/messages file and see exactly
whats going wrong.

Hope that helps.

It appears you have a host lookup problem in the S7 box. You will need
to make sure the S7 box is using the "hosts" file by checking the nsswitch.conf
file and making sure the ip to host name for the linux box is in the host
file on the S7 box.

I use S7 her as an NFS server to both Linux and FreeBSD. The new kernel
NFS on Linux screams.

Hi,
After setting up my Linux box (Redhat 6) to use IP masq'n (via IP chains)
all of my sevices work except FTP. I can log in but can't ls, so it doesn't
work. Now I've seen posts somewhere that say to use ip_masq_ftp.o . This
is on my drive but how to I load this module? Even though the other
services work should I also load the other modules in that folder too??

I agree, the 200 bucks sounds *way* too high. I have 256K both ways for 40
bucks a month, can upgrade to 512 for only 15 dollars more a month... shop
around.
