RH6 uses PUMP, which is hosed. Log in as root, run dhcpcd manually, and you
should be in business. Worked for me.

Are you running the script from a subdirectory only 1 deep (script file is

i have problem on implementing named-based virtual web hosting
i have followed the tutorial
http://www.apache.org/docs/vhosts/name-based.html
here is my httpd.conf:

NameVirtualHost 192.168.0.1

ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DocumentRoot /www/domain1

ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DocumentRoot /www/domain2

ErrorLog logs/domain2-error_log

i just edited the lines stated above,
others are not changed....
do i need to comment the directive DocumentRoot?
cuz whenever i visit www.domain1.com or www.domain2.com,
it just show me the index.html in the directory specified by
DocumentRoot directive

They only have to be 'registered' by the authority for 'somedom.com'. The
authority for 'somedom.com' (ie the individual running the 'somedom.com'
nameserver) is either the original poster, his ISP, or some third-party
organisation which provided the name registration sevice to him. That
individual is the only one who needs to 'register' 'www2'. Then the whole
world will be able to find it.
Check out the DNS howto for a reasonable explanation of the (approximate)
workings of DNS.

I don't think that's mandatory. I've run a Samba server on our
network of WinNT machines for quite some time without DNS server
of lmhosts files. I did have hosts files on all machines though.
If somebody out there is a Netbios/SMB expert: does it use

Please check the FCC registration number of the modem at this site:
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html
If your modem is not approved for import into the U.S., it won't have an
FCC ID-- in which case, please follow up with the number on the largest of
the Rockwell chips on the modem (e.g., RCVDL56ACF/SVD). This will help
identify the type of modem it is...
Also mention if is ISA or PCI, whether it has jumpers, etc.

Hi,
During PPP connexion, is ther a way to stop PPPD,
to send AT commands to the modem with ## echo -ne
'+++' > /dev/modem ##, get response with ## cat
/dev/modem ##, and then resume PPPD ?
I want to perform this for statistics purpose !
I've haven't manage to do this for the moment
because :
- I can't watch modem responses without stopping
PPPD with ## kill -19/20 `cat /var/run/ppp0.pid`
##, and then I can't resume this process ...
- If I send commands to the modem with ## echo -ne
'+++' > /dev/modem ##, they are encapsulated ! So
for example the modem recieve ## pH?889) ccc 5
x[r ` b  +++ ?^@pe88: ## instead of ##
+++ ## ! So I can't return in on-line command mode
!
Does anybody know how to do this ?

Hmm. Redhat 5.2 definitely has kernel support for ppp as a module. It is
kerneld that loads the module. Perhaps the module does not exist?
You tried to just run
/usr/sbin/pppd
and did not get the line of garbage but rather got the "no kernel
support" message I assume. Then it is possible that you did not load the
ppp.o module when you installed (although it is a standard part of the
kernel rpm so am not sure how you could not have loaded it.)
Try
locate ppp.o
to see where it is.
The other thing is to look in /var/log/messages for some message from
kerneld about not being able to find the module or not being able to
load the module.
I would like more info, like a copy of your log files so I could add
something to the page if necessary.

IRQ 0 is definitely wrong. Either your present setting is "PNP OS yes"
or your BIOS is broken. I came across at least 2 different board/BIOS
mixtures where "PNP OS = no" would result in the BIOS _not_ assigning
any IRQs at all. I'd at least give it a try.

that IP address is dynamic (using DTTCP???), port 80 is proxied using

Under windows using winipcfg my IP and gateway show up as 0.0.0.0, but I
do have the dns numbers. Any help would be appreciated.

Running RH5.2. Problem with pppd.
Modem works, can dial through minicom. Kernald running. When I try to

It tells me that if kernal d is running, and I still can't get the pppd

have recompiled several times, trying to
add ppp support in the network section. I have tried modular ppp, and
built in, to no avail. I have followed the axion how to right to the

side the PC. I deleted all routing that I put in,
but it does not fix the problem. I am new to
Linux and am really unsure of where to look for a
fix. Is there something I am missing?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Ken R.

Subject: SQUID won't start...
Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 14:53:14 GMT
Hello,
Try as I may, I cannot get Squid (2.2 Stable) to start. The error
message is as follows"
Executing: /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S90squid start
> Starting squid: squid
* 1999/05/19 20:25:14| Squid is not safe to run as root!
If you must start Squid as root, then you must configure
it to run as a non-priveledged user with the
'cache_effective_user' option in the config file.
* FATAL: Don't run Squid as root, set
cache_effective_user'!
* Squid Cache (Version 2.2.STABLE2): Terminated
abnormally.
* CPU Usage: 0.030 seconds
* Maximum Resident Size: 0 KB
* Page faults with physical i/o: 198
I have set "cache_effective_user" to user "squid" group "squid"
per the default installation parameters.
I am using RH 5.2, kernel 2.0.36. Any suggestions welcomed!
Thanks,
Bob
