Subject: How do you set up 2 network cards?

Anybody know how to get 2 3Com Etherlink XL cards to work in the same box?
I can't seem to force Linux to put the 2 cards on different IRQ/ports.
The cards come up on IRQ 9 base 0xb800; This append does nothing:
append="ether=5,0xb800,eth0" (eth0 will still be on irq 9)

Or, if I put this into conf.modules, eth0 will never come up:
        options 3c59x irq=5

Playing around with the BIOS to force a PCI slot to a particular IRQ has
yielded nothing...

Any ideas?

Since you connect with Win95 it likely does PAP unless your 95 box is
configured for login/password instead.

This isn't very much to help us help you. There should be log(s) of
the chat chatter and pppd negotiations somewhere that can shed light

Try configuring for PAP if that's a RH configuration option.

Hi,

I use Bell sympatico hi-speed edition.
I am running RedHat5.2 with the kernel of RedHat6.0. I suggest you to
stick with RedHat5.2 (or some similar thing) because of the problems
with pump and DHCP in RedHat6.0.

Since I don't know anything about your setup I cannot be of much help
here but if you email me I can give you a hand at this.

Subject: Is there a way to send AT commands to a modem during PPP connexion ?
Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 14:08:40 GMT

Hello,

Is there a way to send AT commands to a modem
during PPP connexion ?

For the moment I've managed to do that :
- start PPP connexion
- stop pppd daemon with ##$kill -19 `cat
/var/run/ppp0.pid`##
- listen the modem with ##$cat /dev/modem##, what
is not possible without stopping pppd daemon

If I send commands to the modem, AFTER PPP
connexion, with ##$echo -ne '+++' > /dev/modem##
for example, these commands are encapsulated ! So
I can see, thanks to the ##"cat /dev/modem"##,
that the modem is recieving :
###############
)o    d    @pH?889) ccc 5 x[r   ` b  +++
?^
@pe88:
cc 5 x{%r ` a `fN_1anbbrsrockwellbcom `

$!oi x*̷S)SN@?"?m?yXVpd\-#C
\nf.Itb!*w
################

All these garbage instead of +++
So I CAN'T return in on-line command mode, to send
AT commands .....

Does anybody have an idea to achieve this ?

One more thing ! Do you know how make the pppd
daemon continue, after being stopped by ##$kill
-19 `cat /var/run/ppp0.pid`## .... I've managed to
do this too
...

Subject: Building a Virtual Comport
Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 14:08:37 GMT

Hi,
I am suppose to build an application that perform
a lot of statistics about a PPP connexion ! For
this purpose, I would be able to talk to the modem
via AT commands during the ppp connexion.
According to me, a great solution would be to
create a virtual com port, with which pppd will
talk instead of the real one. A program would
redirect all data recieved on the virtual com to
the real one, until the moment I want to talk to
my modem. Then we enable CTS to tell pppd to
resend later data and we stop redirecting data to
the real port ! We can now send +++, and AT
commands to the modem ! After this, we would
return in online data mode, redirect again the
data and disable CTS !

Does anybody know if there is already such an
application ? Does anybody find good this idea,
think it's possible, and can giving me advises to
build this application ? Does anybody have an
other (better or not) solution ?

Thanks !

Jim

Assuming you have network cards in each machine, and they are
connected :-)

Install TCP/IP on the NT box, and configure it an IP address.

One microsoft reboot later, and you should be able to ping, telent,
ftp, etc, by IP address.

If you want to connect byt name you will have to add the name/IP of
your Linux box in the /Winnt/system32/ras/drivers/etc/hosts file ?? (
I think that's right ? )

Connecting NT to Linux/Unix by TCP/IP worls really well :-()

Hi all,

I am running tcpdump under linux 2.2.1 and the output looks like that :

16.53.18.379098 ....Bla bla bla
16.53.18.399098 ....Bla bla bla
16.53.18.399098 ....Bla bla bla

It's obvious that 16 is hours, 53 minutes, 18 seconds, 379 ms and 098
microseconds. You can see that the time granularity is 10 ms. The last
four digits are always the same. To see exactly when a packetsIs it
possible to decrease this granularity from 10 ms to 1ms or less ? If
yes, How please ?

thank you

Subject: Re: DHCP/DNS Problem w RH5.2; Linux Can't Ping Itself
Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 13:08:42 -0400

I have the feeling that your problem is using DHCP with a DNS server. When
DHCP grants you an address for your linux box, how does the database in the
DNS server gets updated? I am not sure how it works, it is probably not
instantaneous.

So, when NT wants to ping linux, it goes to the DNS server to obtain its IP
address. Since you have dynamic addressing, you may get an address that is
now obsolete.

When you can successfully ping a name, it means that the DNS database is
current OR that this name is already defined in the local hosts file.

Hope this helps!

With PHP 3.0.7 this leads to an other problem later on Dlist.h (very strange
as
the code pointed by the error is correct)

With PHP 3.0.8 it worked ! Many thanx.

I've succeeded in installing apache + mysql + php on AIX 4.3.2.
The more difficult part was for Mysql, which i have ton install from binaries.
Mysql cause a problem when compiling apache. (symbol .ldopen undefined....).
A -ldd was missing.
With this addition apache compiles again. It compiles without pb without it.

Bye.

You could explicitly enter a route to each host, rather then by network.

Or

Configure your system as a bridge.

: Actually, the $200 is for equipment, which you could use with any ISP
: that uses Pac Bell (the telco) DSL. The install itself is free.

good point - didn't think of it that way. as long as I talk to the same SLAM, then
that alcatel POC should work at least as well as it does today ;-)

[btw, I now have an automated reboot loop working! its great!! if 3
successive ping attempts (configurable) go unanswered, I trigger the
logic that reboots the modem, waits 1 minute, then waits some more for
it to fully come up. at that point, it continues the polling loop.
and whenever the poller starts up or is killed, it logs a time-stamped
event to a file. similarly, when the state-changes occur, I log those
to the file. the file can then be used to create a .gif graph of all
the mgt events that occured. neat-o!] ;-)

if anyone wants the Linux code to do this, email me. obviously you
need a free serial port, the x10 rs232 controller (model cp290) and
the right cable for your serial port (db9->5pin DIN).

I have got LINUX and NT4.0 hosts on my network.
Does somebody knows if it's possible to see the NT hosts files
(NTFS) into the X file manager or thru a navigator such as KDE's on
a Linux host?

Thanks...

Subject: bizarre PPP connection
Date: 27 May 1999 15:52:13 GMT

Hi, folks:

I am running across a bizarre PPP connectio problem with my RedHat 5.2
Linux system. All configurations were made strictly as per "Linux PPP HOWTO"
instruction.

The problem is when I try to get connection to my ISP by
invoking "pppd" I have to keep moving my mouse. Otherwise, the connection
failes with a message reading "LCP: Timeout sending Config-Rquests" in
the /var/log/messages log-file. I am really grateful for your help and
suggestions.

Regards...

of course, but that's not what i want.

it all worked before knfsd.

Subject: Re: Kernel 2.2 TCP incompatible with certain Unices? (Solved)

To follow up, I received a very helpful reply from Andi Kleen, one of
the IPV4 maintainers. The following three lines made all the difference
in the world. Apparently the source of this stalling is broken VJ
compression somewhere in the chain.

Try these to fix the stalling:

echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_timestamps
echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling
echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_sack

Subject: Network topology - frame relay
Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 23:56:23 +0800

I am sort of unclear about the way in which a school network is setup - so
just out of curiousity I would like to know.

I have been told that we have a 128k frame relay connection to an education
network, and within that connection we also have a link to Netvigator - one
of the local ISP's. However, upon doing a traceroute I do notice that
packets do not go through Netvigator but straight to HKT (Hong Kong
Telecom) - which is the backbone used by Netvigatort and not the ISP itself.
I have also been told tbat because of the setup the school network has a
very slow Internet connection - which is true. From what I hear however,
frame relays are supposed to be really fast connections.

What is worrying, is that all of the routes I trace do not seem to pass
through any of the barriers which have been reported to me. Is is possible
that all of the various things running on the Frame Relay remain entirely
invisible? And what would be the actual implications of connecting a school
to a frame relay (as opposed to a leased line, which I am told is
different)?

It appears to me the I.T. administration is not being entirely truthful in
their explanations to me of the school network topology, and this is of
course worrying because we are supposedly supposed to be coming up with
proposals on developments of the school network infrastructure!!

Thanks,
Terence Parker.
