Hello,
I want to share an internet-connection between two PCs, one under linux
(PC1), and the other under Win98 (PC2). I have a HUB, and plenty of RJ45
cable.

PC2(Win98) ------- HUB ------- PC1(linux) -------- Modem
                                           |
                                           |
                                       Printer

So, PC2 is connected to PC1 via the HUB, and PC1 is connected to the
internet directly via the modem.
My goal is to connect PC2 to the internet via PC1 (with linux, and
IPMasq stuff on PC1).

WILL THIS WORK ?

Thank you for helping .

Frontpage is designed to work on MS NT servers. There are pathing
conflicts when used on Apache. Check out www.hal-pc.org the
administrator Marilyn Gore has a pretty good explanation about the
problem on the site.

: Dave,

Just to add to what Jim said, just in case your @Home connection is
managed by a DHCP server, then you'll need to setup either a dhcpcd, the
client, or pump. I haven't upgraded to 6.0 yet, but I understand that the
former has been supplanted by the latter. As for the HOWTO, there is a
miniHOWTO for dhcp, but not sure about pump.

Dave,

A couple of suggestions. Check www.deja.com and search on cable modem.
I'm sure you will find multiple answers and sites that will give directions.

Basicly you need to get your NIC recognized by the OS first. Then you will
need the hostname, domainname, IP address, netmask, gateway, DNS servers
given by your ISP.

The FQD and IP goes in the hosts file, the domainname and DNS servers go in

Try using the right init string for that modem, and not the generic string

Do you have a routable IPs on your internal net?
You'll need to used IP masquerading if not.
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/IP-Masquerade.html

If you've already done that, please post the results of 'netstat -nr' and
maybe 'ifconfig'.

Before you dialed out, could you ping and telnet to the linux bAx from
win98?
bAx !? (must be from Massachusetts)
Ping win98 from linux?

AFAIK, win9x can't share a com port like that. It might be possible to
share a com port from an NT server machine but I don't think samba (the unix

Date: 27 May 1999 22:03:14 GMT

The reason I ask is because I'm about to do a new install of RH6.0 cuz I
got a new HD. I am running 5.2 w/kernel v2.2.2 and I'm using dhcpcd to
manage my IP for me with @Home and it's working flawlessly.

But I have read, especially over on this ng, how pump, even with the
updated version, is giving many people a hard time to get it to work,
usually having to resort to starting dhcpcd manually.

When I install RH6.0, should I not bother to install pump altogether and
just use dhcpcd or is there really a way to get it to work w/ my @Home
connection and people just don't know it? If someone could shed some
light into this, I'd greatly appreciate it.

You need to implement IP masquarading on your 192.0.0.129 machine. This
allows the one 'live' IP address to be used by all other users on your
network. I recently set this up for our 25-user network.

Here are 2 URL's to documents that tell you how to do it.

http://www.atlantic2000.com/ip-masq/index.html

http://bucket.ualr.edu/echo/howtoset.htm

Good luck! It took me an evening of fiddling (I use Redhat 5.2) but not
real tears.

Subject: Can't get both channels on ext. ISDN modem
Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 02:50:56 -0400

I read somewhere that you should be able to just type in the two phone
numbers separated with an ampersand to get both channels to connect on
your ISDN modem. So it would look like this:

555-1234 & 555-5678

When I connect though, no matter what I try, it only connects one
channel. My modem is 3com Impact IQ hooked up to serial port. I have
RedHat 5.2, MaximumCDE and Accelerated-X.

I am using the Network Configurator in control-panel to set up my ppp
interfaces. Then I can type ifup ppp2 or just activate it from the
Network Configurator.

Note that if I move the Modem to my Windoze 98 machine, just typing in
the one phone number connects both channels to my ISP. Or if I want to
connect to NT servers at the office, I type in the two phone numbers
like I mentioned above, and both channels connect.

Is there something extra I must do? Or will I need to download some kind
of a special dial-up application? Please Help! I am in desparate ways,
as I need to X window into my Unix workstations at the office and get
some work done. A single channel is just too gosh darn slow for what I
need to do.

Thanks if you can help,

Marc,

I had similar problems after upgrading to RH6.0. As
someone else already pointed out, RH replaced the
dhcpcd call in /etc/sysconf/network-scripts/ifup
with pump which doesn't seem to work. Try issuing
the dhcpcd command manually. If this gets you connected
replace the pump calls in ifup and ifdown with the
appropriate dhcpcd commands. My files look like this:

/etc/sysconf/network-scripts/ifup:
  ...

  if [ -n "$PUMP" ]; then
echo -n "Determining IP information for $DEVICE..."
  #    if /sbin/pump -i $DEVICE ; then
      if /sbin/dhcpcd -D -H ; then
          echo " done."
      else
          echo " failed."
          exit 1
      fi
  else
  ...

/etc/sysconf/network-scripts/ifup:
  ...
  if [ "$BOOTPROTO" = bootp -o "$BOOTPROTO" = dhcp ]; then
  #       pump -r -i ${DEVICE}
          kill dhcpcd
  fi
  ...

This worked for me.

Luck,

Mike Bird

I have a Cyrix M300 running Caldera 1.1, with kernel 2.0.33, and I get
very similar errors too. I think it's a driver problem. It only happens

According to the ipchains setup:

- Copy the masquerade script to /sbin.
- If using a ppp connection, place a call to masquerade
   in the /etc/ppp/ip-up script.
- The ip-up script looks for ip-up.local and ip-down.local
   files.
- I placed the script call after the [-x ...] test.
- Ran /etc/ppp/ppp-on.
- Did not see any output from the masquerade script.
- Could not ping the outside.
- Ran /sbin/masquerade.
- Saw the script setup output.
- Here the system c r a w l e d . . . . .
- ps aux showed _TONS_ of ipchain processes.
What is going on?

For whatever reason, redhat created pump (apears to a joke named after bootp
[puimp being a womens shoe]) instead of using the functioning DHCPCD client.
Seems to be a bootp variant.

Mabe the two users that login have the same Username/Password authentication
