True, but if you read the diald man pages, you will soon discover that
diald needs to set up a slip port through a virtual tty port. The problem
seems to be that it insists on restarting the already installed slip
connection every time diald reestablishes a real physical connection. I
have added a delroute command which kills the slip connection after startup,
but it still spits out errors to the log. diald worked last night without
crashing, although I had to restart it to send this. I noticed the
following in the log just now:
May 30 21:31:28 sheridan diald[182]: Closing down idle link.
May 30 21:31:28 sheridan diald[182]: Nonzero exit status (7) on command
'/sbin/route add 127.0.0.2 metric 1 dev sl0'
May 30 21:31:28 sheridan diald[182]: Nonzero exit status (7) on command
'/sbin/route add default metric 1 dev sl0'
May 30 21:31:28 sheridan diald[182]: Nonzero exit status (4) on command
'/sbin/route ppp0 default 137.186.208.215 137.186.0.2 0'
May 30 21:31:28 sheridan pppd[1444]: Terminating on signal 2.
May 30 21:31:28 sheridan pppd[1444]: Connection terminated.
May 30 21:31:28 sheridan pppd[1444]: Connect time 0.7 minutes.
May 30 21:31:28 sheridan pppd[1444]: Sent 3955 bytes, received 1173 bytes.
May 30 21:31:28 sheridan pppd[1444]: Exit.
I will try fiddling about a little at a time, and will post my findings if I
discover a more elegant solution this this, plus the problem listed below.
I don't think I am the only one with this issue. diald is cool once you get
it set up right. (not an easy task, but SuSE has 90% of the work done for
you) Even IE under Win95 is not this automatic. I am convinced that with
Linux you can do far more than you can under any MS product - it just takes
a little (or sometimes a lot!) longer to set up. Even so, you learn a lot
in the process.

Agreed. Annoying, but I will play with it as a background activity, and
will post my findings if I find a nice solution. If I do find a clever fix
it may only apply to SuSE users - The init scripts for Redhat and other
distros differ significantly.

Subject: W95 Internet Games -> RH 6.0 Gateway - Help!
Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 21:31:50 -0500
OK, I have been beating my brains out for the past two days trying to
figure this out. I have found quite a few tips from folks and a few web
pages that seem dreadfully out of date and no luck.
I am trying to get Half Life to go from my internal LAN on a Win95 PC
through my RH 6.0 Linux box as gateway onto the net and nothing, so far.
I have learned what I believe the port numbers are, 27015 outbound and
27005 inbound, but I can't get the ipchains setup correctly to get it to
work. As a note, I already have ipchains setup for "normal" web and mail
stuff with a simple ipchains syntax:
ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 192.168.0.0/24
where 192.168.0.x is my internal net assignments. This works for at
least Netscape. :)
This is only the tip of the iceberg, there are a host of other Internet
playable games that have the same problem and I need my multi-player
game fix or I will explode! Please help with posting and emailing the
ipchains syntax to do the job.
Thanks

When I rebooted my Solaris 2.4 box which is my web server all the cgi
counters reset. I was having problems with my utmp file because of a /var
over flow. so I removed the very large file wtmp and wtmpx knowing that it
would be re created on boot up. Does that reset all counters and is there
any way to get them back to the way they were before.

You can use a secure-su where you can configure single commands which shoule
be run as root or use some of the ppp panels which are available for kde or
gnome.

I have apache 1.3.4, and I'm trying to run a simple perl script, but it
doesn't work. I've named the webpage *.shtml and put in <!--#exec
cgi="/cgi-bin/count.pl"--> but it doesn't work. I know the script works,
because if I do perl count.pl then it returns html to me. I think the
problem is that apache isn't running the script, and I'd like to know if
anyone can help me, or at least point me in the right direction to try to
get apache to run my cgi. Thanks in Advance for any assistance.

hello everyone
My linux is a masquerading server connected to a cablemodem. Because the
datalink behind the cablenetwork is a bit overflowed, I've got average
ping replies of 200ms measured at the server.
My clients behind the linux have average ping replies of 400ms (double!)
and a LOT of timeouts (using the same addressses)...
I have the feeling I have a problem with my linux, bu I have no idea
what it could be. Any ideas? I'm using kernel 2.0.34
Thanks a lot for any advice (pref. via email)!

Any ideas?

Ok Folks,
I have now solved the "no login prompt" problem. I get a login prompt, but
now the Linux box refuses to accept any logins; I get a "incorrect login"
message.
I have tried to write a hosts.equiv file to bypass security, I have added
entries to /etc/usertty and /etc/securetty and my windows box is listed in
/etc/hosts.allow. HELP. I'm really starting to go off Linux...;)

This is not an answer -- however I am having the identical problem with the
identical Ethernet card. I can't ping to the machine (times out) and I
can't ping anything from the Linux machine (it just hangs). The network and
the card are fine because the problem machine does connect and is pingable
when booted to Windows 95. I have reinstalled, reconfigured, read several
books, etc.
Confused,
Leland.

Um, what's the question? Do you have a samba problem? If so, what is
it?
Your telnet problem (can't telnet as root) is caused by design.
Somewhere (I forget where, exactly) there is a file which lists users
who are not allowed to make telnet connections. By default, root is
in that file. If you really want to telnet in as root, you can remove
the root entry from that file, but I reccommend that you do so only
from the lan, and configure telnet to reject all connections except
those originating from your lan. The reason is that the packets which
travel on the internet are not secure. There may be quiet a few
people who would be in a position to examine packets on their way to
your machine. If some of those packets open a telnet session as root,
then that person can easily write down your root password, and log on
to your machine and do whatever she or he wants. (including hack
other machines from yours, which could land you in hot water)
I'm not sure what other problems you might be having, because I
couldn't really understand your post.
BTW, If you know all this already, I'm sorry for boring you ;-) But
there are probably some lurkers reading this anyway.
regards,
GW

avoid using upper case letters in the password. I was fighting with this with
just one user. Lo and behold, that one user had an upper case character in
its password. I changed it to all lower case and it worked. Also, don't use
samba passwords if it isnt necessary, it just adds confusion.

Your isp either has to supply that remote IP or has to give you a fixed
one. That is how ppp works.
How do you know it does not supply one?
(0.0.0.0 is NOT a valid IP address)

Does your system have Perl installed?
Have you put:
#!/usr/bin/perl
at the top of your script?
have you set up /cgi-bin to allow execution of scripts?
This should start you off.

Any info on this? I don't seem to have /usr/sbin/ndc. When looking for
