It sounds like your /etc/resolv.conf file is actually a link to
another file which should be created anew each time you get a new IP
address from your provider via DHCP. I'll bet that there's a ">>"
redirection in the creation script where there really should be a ">"
one.
Just a guess, though.

Hi,
I run an ISP and have setup Redhat Linux as my mail and user pages server.
When a user logs into their home directory using their username and password
they have access to the whole linux machine. I want to stop them from being
able to leave their home directory. Any ideas?

Rick,
You can try a ISP named ntr.net. I have hda great success with them and
normally connect on a UU backbone with good throuoghput. You will have to
provided a CC to set up the acount as they like this method of billing. If you
every have problems though, their tech support is pretty good and are rated as
one the top 10 national ISP's by BoardWatch. As was previously mentioned, again
you have to watch the Linux tag. Normally, they can only provided general info,
i.e., dns#, dial#, PPP connection etc.

Even if your users are able to view the whole machine, they won't have
permissions to write to anything, and they can't execute anything via an FTP
port, so you are still fairly secure.

Hello,
I was interested in setting up IP Masq over ISDN under Linux. I'm
only interested in external serial ISDN modems. Which one should I get?
I've heard lots of good things about the Eicon DIVA T/A. Call bumping and
at least two analog ports are a must, I plan on having the ISDN line be my
only phone line. Also, which high speed serial card is recommended?
Thanks,

Check your man pages for ftpd.
man ftpd
On IRIX ( should be "similar" on Linux )
<extracted for IRIX ftpd man page>
if a user is listed in /etc/ftpusers followed by the white-space separated
keyword "restrict" , the user is allowed restricted access privs. The server
performs a chroot command to the users home dir and prints the contents of
the README file if it exists
</extracted for IRIX ftpd man page>

Not necessary. All you need is run diald on the Linux server. Also
note the the kernel must be configured for IP forwarding and
masquerading.

OK, I disabled xdm and I was then able to use shift-pgup. Here's what
isapnp says:
/etc/isapnp.conf:53: WARNING -- resource conflict allocating 8 bytes of IO at 2F8.
/etc/isapnp.conf:56: WARNING -- resource conflict allocating IRQ3
<some stuff>{Zoom Internal V90 Faxmodem}: Port 0x2F8; IRQ3 -- Enabled ok
I really wish dmesg would catch this stuff; I copied this down by hand
so some of the punctuation might be wrong.
It seems like it works in the end, but the warnings bother me. Is there
any way to find out what isapnp thinks the conflict is with?
BTW, line 53 in my isapnp.conf is:
(IO 0 (SIZE 8) (BASE 0x02f8))
and line 56 is:
(INT 0 (IRQ 3 (MODE +E)))
These are the only IO and INT lines not commented out. I'm using the
Debian package isapnptools 1.16-4.1 (the latest stuff).
I don't recall seeing this with my 2.0.36 kernel or even earlier 2.2.x
kernels (I'm at 2.2.7 right now), but I've also upgraded so maybe it
just wasn't being displayed before.

I'm running PPP with 2.2.9 with no problems. There are other packages
which may need to be upgraded when going to 2.2.x series pppd is one .
Check the file Documentation\Changes for things that need to be

Here is the deal. I have a computer already running RH 6.0. This has a
coax ethernet card and is successfully connected to a WinNT server, and
soon to a Win9x machine. I am trying to get another computer running RH
6.0. This computer has no CDROM drive, so I put a coax ethernet card in
it and configured it. The RedHat install program recognizes the coax
card and installs the driver for it. When I try to do a NFS or FTP
install (I have both running on my other RH machine), the install prog
comes back and tells me that it cannot contact the server. Anyone got
any idea why?

This is my second question for this newsgroup, hopefully it'll be as
easy as the first one.
I have a Linux box (v2.0.36 - Slackware v3.6) it has one Internet IP
address (lets say 216.26.16.1 for an example). Is it possible to use
two domain names on the same IP and have my Linux box service requests
to them both (WWW, NNTP, FTP, EMail, etc). For example, lets say my two
domain names are mydomain.teleport.com and mydomain.teleport2.com.
Requests to the second domain name should be handled exactly the same as
requests to the first domain name (obviously except for the domain
name). How could I go about doing this? Thanks in advance for any
help!

I am using red hat 6 kernel 2.2.5.

ran depmod -a
verified that conf..modules contained the line alias eth0 modulename
When the machine starts it fails when attempting to initialize eth0.
I tried using linuxconf but the module name does not appear in the list

I also tried to insmod -o eth0 modulename, but the machine responds with
