: Chances are. you don't need a really full vpn. Take a look at running ssh
: on either end. You can then transport X sessions and replace rlogin. Ftp
: and rcp are replaced by scp. Its really messy to transport other connections
: though.

However, if you ARE looking for a full VPN, try out FreeS/WAN, which uses IPSec
as the transmission protocol and is transparent to all applications.

I'm afraid I don't have a URL for frees/wan, but try looking on slashdot.org
or google -- it has a fair amount of press.

No!

This is for the DFE-530TX. The poster asked for a driver
for DFE-500TX.

I'm having a real pain getting my printer to work
under Samba. I have the other shares working and

watch the files in /var/spool/samba, the request gets
there but the printer never gets active. I've included
the relevant parts of my smb.conf. Any help appreciated.

I have a dual-boot computer with win3.11 and linux.
During bootup with slackware 3.3 (linux kernel 2.0.30), the driver correctly
finds the ISA NIC. But the machine is not reachable and cannot ping other
machines on the network, although it can ping it's own assigned IP address
but nothing else. The computer works well under win3.11.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.....

Rey,

Your motherboard is probably PCI-1.0. PCI 2.0 came out about the
time 90MHz pentiums did.

Your NIC card is probably PCI-2.1. It's probably real new.

There are known problems trying to use a bus mastering PCI-2 card in
a PCI-1 system. Basic problem is that it doesn't work reliably. This
kind of why they went to PCI-2.

Don't toss the motherboard if it's still useful; put the ISA NIC
back in, or get a 100MBit ISA NIC.

    Gary.

Yes dd will copy the entire image. Or sections of an image. If that's
what you want to do. But I think that implies that the 15 workstations
all have the same model disk drives doesn't it? What your getting with
dd is raw disc. No magic translations. If you go from a 2 head drive to
a four head drive things (could?) get wierd when they start looking for
files on cylinder boundaries and such.

Last time I looked at linux autofs, it's config file format was
different from autofs on other UNIX operating systems. Not handy when
managing a network with multiple OS's. So we opted for amd, which can
nicely be administred through NIS. I think that amd is a bit more
powerful then autofs, in terms of configurability. I also like it's
ability to mount replicated disks (if a server gives up). All in all I
can say that our network became more stable after making all machines
use amd.

On the other hand if you have a network of linux machines, autofs
maybe the way to go.

You betcha it's possible! Check out the O'Reilly & Associates book "DNS and
Bind", and check out www.isc.org for more specific info on Bind. What you'd
do (generally) is install bind 8 and setup the named.conf for multiple
domains, and create separate zone files (1 for each domain you wish to host,
or each resource you want to serve).

IP masquerading would not be the way to go....unless you wanted to have more
than one machine sharing your bandwidth.

Subject: Newbie question - Modem share

Hi,
Ive been working with M$ products for 11 yrs so I can accept techie
answers, but kinda new at linux.

My Q is this.. Is there a util that will work similar to a proxy server
under NT?

I wish to share an internet connection (DU. Floating IP) across a
network with all ports available without *too* much setting up. I
currently run 1 linux box (play machine) 1 W98 and 1 W95 box.

Im currently using Ishare for win with disappointing results and think
Linux can do much better.

The contents of your .fetchmailrc would be most helpful here (edited of
course). Does it work from the gateway machine (10.1.2.8)?
