I have checked the output of ifconfig and it says that my ethernet devices
eth0 are up without any errors
(on both Computers)

The output of netstat -rn gives me the lines you wrote except the line with
the default Gateway.
I have only one line beginning with "0.0.0.0" but this ends with the ippp0
device. The complete line:
0.0.0.0 193.158.138.249 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 ippp0
I do not know where this line comes from.

Sorry, but I do not really understand your line with the default Gateway. Do
I need exactly the same line you
wrote me or do I have to change it correctly for my system. Is it right that
there should appear "def_gw"??
And what is the command to add this route to the routing table?

Many Thanx: Fabian

Subject: Linux Dual Homed Firewall
Date: Thu, 03 Jun 1999 16:09:07 +0000

hi,

I am about to get a 64K leased line in to host some web sites. I
currently have two machines that I'm going to use for this task. the
first is a Compaq Proliant 1600 with all the trimmings, and the second
is a crappy old Dell P120 with 32 Mb ram and 1Gb HDD.
I have 2 network cards in the Dell, and plan to use this as a dual homed

fire wall which proxies the services on the Compaq.
I would like to have the following services on the Compaq

External availablility.
        www
mail (incoming / outgoing (imap and pop))
dns (internal and external as we are hoping to get a class C)
ssh or something similar for admin and off site users to login
to
ftp for known users (not anonymous users)
        ICMP

Internal Only
Samba (have to use some NT boxes here :( )
        NFS
        NIS

Would I be right in thinking that I can use the tisFWTK on the Dell with

RH6.0 to proxy these services? Do I than have to use IPChains to get
requests forwarded onto the internal network via eth1 (eth0 goes to the
external router from the Dell).
I'm having a little trouble getting my head around this configuration.
I have been using Linux for while know, but it's the first time I've
done anything like this. Has anyone done this before? Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

I'm using pppd 2.3.7 with kernel 2.2.6. Simply use
the demand option when starting up pppd (it
will then persist so do this at bootup) and
specify a fake address for the interface. When any
packets are sent to that interface (i.e. its the
default route) the link is started by pppd. Also
supports holdoff, idle hangup and ip-up / down
scripts.

Have a look at the ppp HOWTO. (Sorry I don't have
other links available for you right now - you
could dl ppp2.3.7 somewhere and take a look at the
documentation included).

This will work because it is same as following:

ipfwadm -F -a accept -P all -S 10.100.110.0/24 -D 0/0
ipfwadm -F -a accept -P all -S 10.100.111.0/24 -D 0/0

Deciding about the direction of the traffic is not that easy - espically
for connection less protocols like UDP. The probably simplest way to
achive our goal with the standard methods of Linux is to use
Masquerading.

ipfwadm -F -a accept -m -P all -S 10.100.111.0/24 -D 0/0 -W eth0

In RH 5.1 and probably later also, the easiest way is to enable IP
printing. I did this on my RH 5.1 system by using the program
PRINTTOOL. IIRC it was pretty self-explanatory in that you just specify
the IP of the printer and it automatically sets up the printterm file.
Then you can just share the printer queue under linux with the rest of
your network using Samba. My printer is a HP and included a JetDirect
card. Using the included JetAdmin software, the Windows boxes (I run
NT) can print directly to the IP printer without having to have a queue
on the linux box.

OK, you've got the wrong idea :)

Most likely people didn't respond to your query because it has been
answered thousands of times in the past. Doing some simple reading would
have got you the answer anyway.

Simply put: Your ppp0 link uses a different network address to your eth0
interface. It's your eth0 which has the 192.168.0.1 address. When you
connect to your ISP, they "force" a specific internet-useable address to
your machine at the end of the _ppp0_ link.

Check it out - when you're connected to your ISP, type "ifconfig" to see
your interface configurations. Then try ifconfig again with ppp not
connected.

I never reply by email as a) I don't give out my real email address freely,
and b) it stops other NG users from reading the solutions to problems
If necessary, however, I can be contacted thru linuxstart.com@geegee.
(Swap "geegee" and "linuxstart.com").

I have a machine that is behind a remaping firewall, which screws up the
ip's so when I go on the net my ip is not what it is suppose to be and when
I try to run the q3 server no one can connect to me !!

There is also an updated driver _from_Netgear_ as version 0.90 (IIRC) on
the Netgear website. I got this one and it seems to work fine, but I
have all older revisions with the DEC chipset. However, the readme
indicated that it was modified to work with the other chipset.

I get a connection refused message when I try to ftp from any PC on my
network to my linux box. I just installed RH 6.0 and I think the
service is setup. I am running IP masqerading, but I don't see how
this should affect anything. I can telnet to the box.

Subject: I CANT PING MY NETWORK RH 5.2
Date: Thu, 3 Jun 1999 11:49:03 -0300

Hi,

I installed RH 5.2 with a kingston ethernet card on my network and I was
able to make linux see my ethernet card using ne2000 pci module and I
asigned a ip address of my subnet to that card, but when i try to ping other
ip inside my network it doesnt do nothing no errors nothing. I created a
route and added the correct ip for the default gw and netmask but it still
does the same. Does anyone had this kind of trouble with it?

PLEASE HELP

Francisco
