It's a proxy server ...
Mainly 1) to cache web and ftp data for users and 2)restrict access to
internet services 3)spy on people

But also as an "http accelerator" to put in front of a web server, such
as apache.

Hello !!
We use the squid proxy 2.1 for our internet connection.
We have some parent caches for our intranet and a direct connection
without a parent cache. Now squid should use icmp for the communication
with the parent caches but not for the direct communication with
webservers in the internet. Is there an option, where I can disable
the icmp-communication for direct connections to servers.

Actually for the registry-wary, the Win98 CD has a pair of .inf files
that will allow you to switch between encrypted and unencrypted
passwords. I'm not in front of a Win98 machine right now, but just do a
search on the Win98 CD for ptxt_off.inf and ptxt_on.inf. Right
mouse-click ptxt_on.inf and select INSTALL. Reboot and you're using
plain text passwords.

Hello to all,
    I'm adding a second modem to complete a dialin,dialout

setting for the least amount of trouble, or better yet a
good howto page on adding a second modem. I'm using
a terminal node controller on com2 "ttys1" which can
be change if necessary. I've yet to see anything on
adding a second modem, any and all help would be
appreciated.

In addition to the 3com 905B issue, should I be concerned about what hub
I buy? Could a "hub" not be compatible with my linux network? As I
mentioned above I don't really know how hubs function, so I can't
determine if there could be something incompatible.

There's an easier way.

Go to tucows or some other file distribution site (www.tucows.com) and
download an FTP server for your Windows box and install it. Then just FTP to
the Windows box from your Linux box to get the file.

Yes, you will need a network card. If you don't use a hub, be sure to get a

And your ip address that you have been assigned by the ISP?

192.168.x.x are INTERNAL addresses only, routers won't route
them to the internet.

your 198.7.0.0 is an EXTERNAL network, your should have an
ip address either static or dynamicly assigned to you. Are you using
DHCP maybe?

2. Why is PPP connection so sluggish in Linux ??

I have Cyrix MII 300 Mhz running and a Motorola Voicesurfr external

and it didn't help at all, and i've already tried setting the MTU and

Another option is to use Linux's native X. Download an X Server from, say,
Tucows (www.tucows.com) and create an XDMCP session (I use XWin32 for this)
to your Linux box.

You get a true remote session (not a screen scrape like PC Anywhere) and
over Ethernet it runs like a hot damn. Not so spritely over dialup tho...

Note that depending on your installation of Linux, you may have to edit the
etc/hosts.allow file and add the IP address of your Windows box.

I just recieved a new Dell PowerEdge 1300 with Linux pre-installed. I'm
trying to use this as a file/web server and have set up samba and
netatalk so that everyone is able to use it. Only problem is that the
network connection is sometimes very slow and regularly hangs completely
forcing me to go to the actual terminal and restart all network
services, I usually just reboot. As of yet no one is trying to connect
(I haven't announced that it is up yet) so the traffic is very low, like
just me. When the system hangs and I go to look at the screen the
following message fills the screen:

eth0: Transmit timed out: status 0090 command 0000

The system logs show:
<date and time stuff> kernel: eth0: Transmit timed out: status
0090
command 0000
<date and time stuff> kernel: eth0: Trying to restart the
transmitter

The status number varies (0050, 0080). I also see strange things when I
run ifconfig while the system is hung. In addition to the loopback and
eth0 devices I see:
        :Unkown Device
I hae tried shutting down the Samba and atalk daemons but this seemed to
have no affect. I also have checked for any IRQ conflicts and found
none. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

New config options have appeared, old ones have disappeared or have changed
names, ...
I don't know (and haven't look for) a tool that can upgrade your .config
file, so what you have to do is

        cp old.config .config
        gmake menuconfig

and then go through the whole config steps and fix the few problems.

> that will not boot and instead loops through getting the errno 111

That might not be a problem with your .config but with something else.
A good habit is to give a lot more info when posting such a question
(like in what part of the boot it started giving you those errors).

Sorry, can't do it with Proxy Server. That's all it does is proxy...you need
a NAT (Native Address Translation) or IP Masquerading server (they're
basically the same thing). Simple as pie to do under Linux (if you read the
howto's), but NT requires a separate third-party program to do it, say, a
firewall.

Or you could wait for Windows 2000. It has NAT built-in.

Another option is to install Samba and make your Linux box look like an NT
Domain controller...

Lotus has said that it will be porting Notes to run on linux fairly
soon, but right now, there isn't really anything. I'm not sure how long
it will take, but as part of the GNOME project, we're working on
developing a messaging system. This will handle email, calendaring,
vcard(address book), and any other things that you might think of as
"messages". The coding that's going on at the moment is for the client
piece, but as soon as we have a working model of that, I'm sure that
we'll be discussing/coding the server. Any way you slice it, there
isn't a groupware solution for linux, Yet...
