Please post an extremely easy to understand manual that describes how to
make my ISDN adapter work in Linux Red Hat 5.2,
I have a ITK Columbus Card ISDN adapter.
I will gladly pay $50 to the first who can make it work.

Subject: Bandwidth friendly mail notifier
Date: 5 Jun 1999 14:29:25 +0800
I'm chasing a client/server which can do mail notification with minimum use of
bandwidth.
I would like a mail client to access a mail server over a wireless link which doesn't
like lots of packets being sent over the link. The client would have to be
Windows95/98/NT, and the server preferably Linux (Windows NT if absolutely necessary).
I'd like to open a connection from the client to a port on the server, tell the server
with a single block of data which email accounts and passwords I'd like to have
checked, leave the connection open and not send anything else over the connection
until I have new mail. The information would be in the form of the "From:",
"Subject:", "Date:" and size fields only (and the account). Mail accounts will
probably be on the same machine as the server, but the ability to check remote
accounts via pop would also be useful.
I can write some or all of the client/server, but I'd prefer if some or all of it was
already written.
I'm flexible on some of the things. If it could be integrated into the client, it
would be even better. Speaking of which- I've noticed MS exchange gives mail
notification when used with Outlook. Is this an efficent use of bandwidth ? Is there
a port of that server for Linux ?
I've also noticed that the IMAP spec. indicates it can give mail notifications, but my
tests with a Linux server and Outlook Express client indicate that they're not event
driven, but still need to be actively checked. Is this the fault of the server
settings, the server implementation, the client, or my misreading of the IMAP spec
that makes me think it is possible ? (I'm running RH 5.2, no major mods.)
The number of packets that POP sends/receives when checking mail every 5 minutes is
too much for my radio link. I don't mind downloading the mail when comes in
(preferably optionally, given just the headers), but the wasted number of packets from
a POP style checking is too much.
I hope someone can help me.
Thanks.

I need to set up a box to nat for my lan, but not just
send the data out as 1 ip, but to send it to another
proxy sever:port.
[lan/win95]--hub-[linux/ipwad]---[proxyserver:port]--[data]
[lan2]-[router]/
If I set up the win95 workstations to use the proxy server,
then I can get to the data just fine.
But I can't get to anything in lan2.
If I remove the proxy setting I can get to lan2, but not to
data.
I want to set up the linux box to accept, masq,
AND send data on as proxied requests.
As a start is there even a way to have a linux box make
proxy requests for its self?
(not just netscap but ping, telnet...)
Any help, hints, rtfm of a faq/howto I missed,...
will be appreciated!

Had a similiar problem with a poweredge 2300, same config.
The 2.0.36 kernel really really doesn't like the intel etherexpress proo
10/100 card that dell installs. upgrade your kernel to 2.2.5 (at least)
and it should be fine.
I also noticed that networking ran fine at first, but over a period of
about a week just totally died. Ran fine for about 10 minutes or so...
then a wall of errors shut it down. check netstat -a -s every bit to see
if that's what happening...

Subject: Routing not working between eth0 and tr0: Help!
I have a Slackware Linux 2.0.34 box with:
- an IBM 16/4 ISA Token-Ring card, (10.7.7.25)
- a PCI NE2000 compatible ethernet card, (10.7.8.25)
with each card defined on a different subnet. Each card works well on
its own subnet (i.e.I can ping other computers), however I cannot get
packets routed between the two subnets (i.e. I can't ping an ethernet PC
from a token-ring PC). Although I'm fairly new to Linux, I believe my
rc.inet1 is correct, based on what I've read in the how-to.
I'd really appreciate any hints with this.

Hi,
After insmod parport you also have to insert parport_pc
and issue the following :
echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq
After that do "insmod plip" and it should work!

At work, I administer a small ethernet network (using addresses
in the 192.168.1.xxx range). We use diald and ipfwadm to get
to the Internet and this works really well.
My boss now wants to spend more time out of the office (hurrah)
but needs to dial in to our network from a Windows 95/98 machine.
I have to make this happen.
I had a hunt round the Internet and it looked as if mgetty was the
answer. I compiled and installed it and was sitting smugly when
the modem answered on the first attempt. BUT diald kicked in and
tried to call out- which of course it couldn't do.
The user (given in the Windows 95 dial up connection) had logged in
but pppd was complaining that the address of the dialup (which I
had set to 192.168.2.1) was unknown. There is an entry in /etc/hosts
for this machine.
The only change to the ppp set up was to add a '*' entry in the
pap-secrets file. I configured mgetty to use AUTO-PPP and this
seems to have worked. I think I'm just missing something on the
pppd setup.
The Linux box is running a (reasonably) standard RedHat 5.2 setup
with Kernel version 2.0.34. diald, mgetty and ipfwadm are all
at the latest (stable) versions.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

You should download and "make" the source package
- the "easy" binary installation hasn't worked for me (and neither for you
by the sound of it).
Any problems you may have could be that you have not installed
kernal-source.
I have the madge driver installed on a RH5.2 (with the card you name), so
it is possible to get it to work.
IF you can't compile, I'll make a compiled version avaliable (but it's
always best to roll your own, then you know what's in it)
http://www.linuxtr.net is also a source of general tr info.

Check out KBiff. I found it on the RH6.0 CD. In the configuration you
have the option of running any command you want when a new mail arrives.
Set it up to run a script or whatever you want (page the recipient or

Unless they've changed the kit since I got it a couple of months ago,
that's NOT what you just bought. I thought I'd gotten that too, but
that's not what was in the box, and, with *very* careful reading of
the box, it's not what they said was in the box either.
If you got the same package I did, what you *actually* got was 2
10/100BaseT interface cards and a 10BaseT 5 port hub. The hub is NOT
100BaseT capable...though at first, second and third glance, the box
will *appear* to indicate that it is. The cards work just fine at
either speed though.
Rather than get upset and return it, I just got myself a D-Link hub
that *is* 10/100BaseT capable, and now I've got plenty of ports...for
an extra $100. Since I've got three machines that can't do 100BaseT I
can use a 10BaseT hub, and since the D-Link does both, the 10 hub goes
into the 10/100 hub and *everybody* talks together just fine.
I like the Linksys cards...but I'm not so sure I like the sneaky
marketting guys who designed the box layout to stress "10/100BaseT
Networking" in big letters, next to pictures of the cards and hub,
then put a 10BaseT only hub in the box...makes no sense to put a 10
hub with a pair of 10/100 cards and stress the high speed when you
won't get it with what they are selling you...but that's exactly what
they did! It wasn't a mistake either...the instruction book spells it
out clearly...once you've paid for the kit and opened it up that is.

You are using the wrong version of dhcpd. It's for 2.2 kernels.

This should be "alias net-pf-17 af_packet". But this is only available
in kernels since 2.1.xx.
