It turns out that SuSE 6.0 and probably 6.1 have a 3c5x9 ethernet card
setup utility called 3c5x9setup in the /sbin directory. I only found it
after downloading the DOS version from 3com and rebooting into windows. It
looks like it is totally unnecessary. I don't know if RH has the same
utility, but it would have saved me a pile of trouble if I had noticed it
earlier. I am posting it here, since a lot of other people seem to be
having trouble with configuring this card. So, if you have a 3c509 or
3c509b and a recent distribution, you might be able to configure the card
without the bother of booting into DOS. It is too late for me, but I am
posting this in hopes of saving others some time and trouble.

I have a small network with a linux box doing masquerading. I need to
forward all incoming mail to MS Exchange running on an NT server behind
the linux. I want to use sendmail on the linux box to forward all mail
to the server, but every time I try, I get an Email back stating that
forwarding has been denied. How can I configure sendmail to forward
every thing it receives to the exchange server???

Thanks! My O'reilly Sendmail book is on order but will not get here in
time...

Yes, or modify the exsting one to handle "192.168.0.0/23" instead of
"192.168.0.0/24".

Hi,
I have noticed that some people were having trouble getting Microsoft
Age of Empires working behind a NAT, here is the ipautofw ruleset that I
use:

ipautofw -A -r udp 2300 2400 -h www.xxx.yyy.zzz
ipautofw -A -r tcp 2300 2400 -h www.xxx.yyy.zzz
ipautofw -A -r tcp 28800 28912 -h www.xxx.yyy.zzz
ipautofw -A -r udp 1410 1450 -h www.xxx.yyy.zzz
ipautofw -A -r tcp 1410 1450 -h www.xxx.yyy.zzz

(www.xxx.yyy.zzz is the IP of the machine on the network to be playing AOE)

I have tested this on a RedHat 5.2 installation with the Linux Kernel
version 2.0.36 patched with the ipport patch, and a udp "gaming" patch.

Happy Gaming,

Check the interrupt for your modem is set correctly (use setserial
/dev/modem (or /dev/ttyS?)
If not correct set by setserial /dev/whatever irq n where n is the real IRQ
for the modem.

Are you doing a direct connection from one nic to the other or through a hub? If
it's a direct connection, you may not have a "crossover cable". The package of
the cable you have bought should be clearly labled as a crossover cable. If it's
not, then it's probably not. Here is a link on how to make a crossover cable:

http://www.gcctech.com/ts/doc/crossover.html

or a little more in-depth:

http://makeitsimple.com/how-to/dyi_crossover.htm

Hope this helps.

I'm looking for a program that will monitor metwork activity on my
simple network. My network is two windows95 machines masq'd
through my RH5 box.

An exapmle of what I'm looking for:

Say one of the windows95 machines, I start downloading something big
via ftp and I leave it. I then leave the house and go to work, while
it downloads. What I would like to see is how many packets are going
through my network machine when I ssh to it from work... so I can see
how fast the download is going or if it has completed. Something that
displayed kb/sec going through my modem would be awesome!

Any known console tools that would do this for me...?

hi there.

i've been trying to install a third ethernet card but it refuses to work.
it's an isa pnp card, and things work okay but once i actually try to use
it i get errors in my /var/log/messages, referring something like "TX
error, possible interrupt problem?". there is no irq or port conflict,
i've checked that. as reported by isapnp (which enables it ok on port 320,
irq 11) the card is:

# ANSI string -->OvisLink LE-8019R PLUG&PLAY Ethernet Card^@<--

ifconfig gives me the following, with a lot of dropped RX packets
apparently.
(i've included the whole readout, in case anything else in there is
relevant).
the offending card is eth2.

eth0 also runs quite slow, and i notice here that there are a lot of
collisions. could anyone recommend some way to proceed so i could pinpoint
what the problem is, for both these issues?

Actually what you'd probably rather do is enable encryption in smb.conf. Then
use smbpasswd to set the encrypted password for samba. Read the documentation
before you do this. I'm probably leaving something out... it's been a while

Subject: dynamic IP ?!?!?
Date: Sun, 6 Jun 1999 01:07:03 +0200

hi all,

I newly updated my system from suse 5.3 to Suse 6.1.
My linux box works as a router in a smaller lan.
My ISP works with dynamic IPs.
The old system (kernel 2.0.35) handled the dynamic IPs correctly (as I far
I can say ;-)
The new system (2.2.7) drops the first 1-4 packets when the connection is
established.
Of course I applied the dynip patch. (echo 7 >
/proc/sys/net(ipv4/ip_dynaddr).

I looked in my messages files and found messages like 'kernel:
tcp_v4_rebuild_header(): shifting sk->saddr from 192.168.1.88 to
109.208.40.5'

Sounds good but when I make pings to an internetadress I have a loss of 3 or
4 packets at the beginning.
I did not had that with the older kernel. Because of this I have problems
with my other apps such as squid and sendmail. They all work but with
unpredictable delays and so on.
I checked everything (ipppd-configuration, kernelparameters....)
Im getting crazy. It worked with the old version !!!

Did I forgot something ?

Would be great if someone could help.

Please mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanx

Stephan

Subject: interpretation of nmap results
Date: Sat, 05 Jun 1999 22:15:25 GMT

I have a Linux 2.0.26 system with a firewall configured for
masquerading so my internal network can use our full-time T1
connnection. I scanned this machine from an outside address using the
latest nmap beta. nmap could not determine anything about the machine,
and in fact reported the host as not even being up. Yet I can use this
machine to access the Internet (as can my internal machines) and
everything seems to be working fine. Is this too good to be true?
Should I feel some measure of safety if a port scan returns nothing, or
is there much more to the story of guarding against break-ins?

This firewall is protecting a dozen machines, and it's my ass if it
fails to do the job. Suggestions?

Thanks..

Could be that you have your win 9.x clients NIC's setup as full duplex

Pppd is talking to itself. Note that the sent messages are identical with
the rcvd messages, including the magic numbers.

The modem can be configured this way (e.g. AT&T1) but it is much more
likely that the chat send/expect script is causing this to happen.
One possiblity is that the chat script ends improperly - maybe the
last line has a `\' at the end of it? Otherwise make sure that chat
-v is used and post both the chat script as well as the chat chatter,
including timestamps, which is usually found in one of the /var/log files.

: exec /usr/sbin/pppd debug lock modem crtscts /dev/modem 57600 \
: asyncmap 20A0000 escape FF kdebug 0 $LOCAL_IP:$REMOTE_IP \
: noipdefault netmask $NETMASK defaultroute connect $DIALER_SCRIPT

The first two lines above have a TAB following the visible `\' which also
could cause trouble if they are really in the ppp-on script. There is
nothing in the log that suggests that this is the actually the case however.

Oh yeah. Now I remember. "A line of code is worth a thousand words."

It is well to remember that. I often forget it, unfortunately. I am
always saying things like "now here is a feature that would be really

: forward all incoming mail to MS Exchange running on an NT server behind
: the linux. I want to use sendmail on the linux box to forward all mail
: to the server, but every time I try, I get an Email back stating that
: forwarding has been denied. How can I configure sendmail to forward
: every thing it receives to the exchange server???

Another way to do this is with a port forwarder on the linux box to
shunt/repeat the connections it gets in on port TCP/25 over to the
exchange box.
