No, you should be able to do all configuration in text mode via a telnet
session. That's the way I have my ip masq system set up.

For Redhat see

Try this.
Telnet to port 119 again
after the response type this
mode reader
A response will appear again. Then type
group news.software.nntp
Yet another response ...
then type
xover
A message ID should be the first BOS (Bunch Of Stuff) within <>'s
There may be more that one if it is a thread. Grab one by typing
article <message_ID>
and it should spit back a message.
Best I remember there were significant difficulties with doing a
application level proxy with NNTP (which is kind of off base because
the IP masq is not application level). If the above experiment does
not yield an article it is likely an excercise in futility trying to
make it work. If it does, it would be prudent to experiment with
some different readers.
Not a tremendous amount of help but something to gander at.

Have you tried to limit MTU (Maximun Transmission Unit)
try 501 or 296
look at /etc/ppp/options and add
mtu 296
When my ISP upgraded their hardware, I had similar problems until I
changed my
mtu. Overall I got faster transfer speeds (probably fewer retransmits)

Meling Mudin scribbled manically:
: I managed to get sendmail working on my teeny-weeny home LAN.
: However, fetchmail does not work. I get this error:
: fetchmail: skipping poll of mail.excite.com, eth0/10.1.2.8 IP address
: excluded
: fetchmail: normal termination, status 0
: Here's my .fetchmailrc:
: poll mail.excite.com
: interface "eth0/10.1.2.8"
Let's stop right here. Firstly, this may be a problem simply because
10.1.2.8 is not a publically routable address (which you probably knew).
This means you can't use it when dealing with the outside world. But why
are you specifying it anyway, unless you really do have more than one route
to your ISP's mailserver? Have you tried it without that line?
: My machine (10.1.2.9) is connected to the internet via another linux
: box (10.1.2.8) which acts as a gateway.
: Another problem is that I cannot fetch any files when using ftp.
: I managed to get a connection, but whenever I typed 'ls' on the
: remote ftp server, I get '..illegal port..' error. But this does not
: happen when I ftp'ed from the gateway machine.
Do you have IP masquerading going? And/or firewalling? Sounds
to me like the gateway is not properly set up...

annoying. My Redhat 5.2 does not have this. Can anyone tell how this can
be turned off?

Just out of curiousity-- how much RAM do you have installed and is your
swap partition enabled? Did you happen to compile out support for virtual
consoles (a new option in the 2.2 kernels)?

On the 3c59x issue, that is the correct module for a 3c905x card. (At
least, it is under the Slackware I use.)
The original poster should probably be sure he has the latest version
of 3c59x.c -- but if that's the problem he should have seen an error

I doubt it's the driver for wd80x3. All of the NICs that I use show the
same behavior, including wd8013, smc-Ultra, smc-EtherEZ, and 3c509. For
each of them, ifconfig reports an i/o address higher than the one the
card actually is at, as it shows in /proc/ioports. But all work well, so
I didn't look into it. As an example, I have in the machine I'm typing
on now a 3c509 at 0x300, which shows 0x310 in ifconfig. Go figure. It's
probably the midrange of the i/o space used, i.e 0x310 for 0x300-0x31f.

Hey there...
I am a 10th grader in high school, and in my computer class i set up
a computer with RedHat 6.0. My teacher says that he will let me put it in
the computer lab if i can set it up so that it is able to print to network
printers, and log on to the school NT server (NT 4) so that users can access
their network folder and save to it.
The question:
Does anyone know how to configure Red hat so that it can use DHCP, log
onto the NT server, and use the network printers?
I have spent a lot of time searching the internet for sites that might
explain this, but haven't found much.
I would greatly appreciate any help i could get!! Thanx :)
