Somehow, both of you guys skipped right over the answer to my question. Is
a hosts file of any kind REQUIRED or not? You are suggesting that I set up
a WINS server - which would require IP addresses to be assigned to each
client. B-z-z-z-z-z!!!! That is exactly what I am trying to avoid - using
a hosts or lmhosts file. All we want to do is emulate a workgroup in
windows - where all we have to do is specify a workgroup name and a machine
name.
Thanks again.

Ok, i thought i had everything right but i must have strayed from the
path somewhere.
I have 3c90x pci card that was working fine uner 2.0.36-0.7 and -3 but
then again -3 is done with rpms so its really a no brainer.
Even if i go to configure it with the network configurator in X11 it sees
that it is there, active, and all my numbers are right but nothin.
Everything appears to be working fine except for the fact that my card
doesnt work.
error is(at boot): eth0 unknown interface
hopefully this isnt too vague but then again it is 140 in the mornig.
thanks for any ideas or help

Try "rdist" if you don't have it installed you can probably find this in a
contrib somewhere. Rdist isn't really replication, but from your explanation
I think it should do.

Subject: Telnet stopped working
Date: Sun, 6 Jun 1999 03:43:17 -0400
My problem: I have an account at school. I connect to the school via
modem, then I use telnet in the command line to do stuff at my
account there. All of the sudden now, after connecting to my ISP
(school), I can't telnet to my account there - machines can't be found.
for example,
typing "telnet godzilla.acpub.duke.edu" gives
"godzilla.acpub.duke.edu: Host name lookup failure".
same for any other machine that usually could give me telnet access to
my account.
Everything remains working fine in win95 - i can telnet to all
these machines, so I assume the problem is on my Linux system (not at school).
What went wrong on my Linux system? (I'm rather new to Linux)
thanks

PS. I checked DNS addresses in Win95 and LINUX. they are the same

I am not confused with Windows 95 ... most folks think I look more like
a young Robert Redford :)
Seriously, though, yes, I have heard of a service pack. I define it as a
set of fixes available as soon as the horse has gotten completely away.
One of the things the folks at MSFT can not duplicate at the moment is
the ability the Linux community has to move quickly in response to a
security breach. This gulf becomes more critical daily as more and more
companies have the majority of their existence online. MSFT is unable to
deliver its fixes as quickly to as many people. Everyone who uses Linux
can have that patch on the same day and for the same cash outlay ...
zip. There is NO arrangement for customer prioritization. No one has to
wait until they have the money ... perhaps too late to ward off assault.
If NT is going to remain a monolith, it needs to become an order of
magnitude faster monolith. Otherwise, Linux or some other open-source OS
/ server combination is going to zip right around it. The open-source
folks are too spread out to be crushed.
So relax. You will still make a good living administering NT for quite a
while ... but teach your son some other trade.
In other matters:
have you heard that after Microsoft acquired Lycos they tried to run it
on NT servers, failed, and put it back on Solaris / Linux ? It's running
fine, now. :)

Hi
I have an interesting situation, and was wondering if anyone could help me.
We have a little network running at home, with the following machines: 1 x
NT server, which is the PDC, and runs a Webserver, FTP-server, DNS, WINS,
etc, as well as running MS Proxy server. This machine is also our dail-up
machine.
We then have 2 workstations, which are both now running RedHat 6 and NT
Workstation dual-boot.
I need to know how to configure our Linux machines to use the MS-Proxy
service. I know this might not be the right newsgroup to ask this question
to, but I really would appreciate some help. We cannot get rid of NT yet, as
we are still VERY new to Linux, and need NT for some other things as well.
Anyhelp would be appreciated.

Hi there
I recently got myself a server on the internet running linux. In the server
i got a 3c905 network card. I then recompiled my kernel to kernel 2.2.9.
Everything now works fine except that when i run this command
/sbin/ifconfig eth0:1 208.249.21.105
I get this
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such device
Is this a common problem. And how do i solve it. Is there another way to add
another ip to the card. I need this realy fast since my host needs to be set
up with 4 ip adresses as soon as possible
