Hello!
If you are talking about running SCO desktop on your Linux workstation, then
NOP, you can't.
But you can run X apps from your SCO box and display them on Linux desktop.
Here is one of the ways you can do it:
1) Login on your linux box, startx.
2) Open xterm window and telnet to your SCO box.
3) at the SCO prompt type: export DISPLAY=X.X.X.X:0.0 (where X.X.X.X is your
linux box's IP address).
4) now you can run apps from within this telnet session (netscape, scoadmin,
xclock, etc.) and they will display on your Linux desktop.
Good luck!

I'm not the best expert on this, but - FWIW.
You can do quite a few things. One is to assign the dialin
clients "private" IP addresses (192.168.1.1 etc) and use IP masq.
The outside world wil think everything is coming from your dialin
*server*.
Another way, if you have IP addresses to spare, is to assign each
dialin client a "real" IP address and set your ipfwadm (or
ipchains) to do plain routing (no masq).
Third - when you say "internet access" maybe you mean just web
browser access. (That's not the usual meaning, but we'll not go
into that right now!) If so, you can give them all "private"
addresses, install a good cacheing proxy (like squid - I've heard
it's great!), and have all your dialin clients use this machine as
the "proxy" in their Netscape configs. No ip masq or even
forwarding to mess with. Quite restrictive, though fairly common
scenario.

Hello!
Check this URL: http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/NET-3-HOWTO.html
It may have some info about configuring several eth devices. If not, you may
follow instructions on how to configure single interface, just use eth1 name
instead of eth0.
Good luck!

other machines nor can the linux box be pinged from our nt computers. I
have disabled pnp on the nic and it is detected when autoprobe is run. I
am running Redhat 5.2 Is there any step by step suggestions I can go to?
I am not sure that my route tables have been set up correctly. We have a
gateway that is assigned an ip address in our network

Doesn't work for me. I have user level security and encrypted
passwords. I set my password with smbpasswd -a username. I now have
the same password on my nt box and linux box. How hard should this
be? I used Samba several years ago under W311 without a problem.
Samba gets harder to use as time goes on. The cute gui's don't do
much for me. Can anyone spot the problem here?

I love linux...but
There was even a recent 2.2 that had a fault in the networking that
caused the network to flood. Of course there was a fix within a week
where MS would take a couple of months.
If your company's problem is truly a flooding issue then they aren't
that bright. With any network management software you can tell the MAC
address of the computer causing problems. They should sniff some
packets before they go around harassing nice linux users

Reply-To: "Tess" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
I am thinking of installing SuSEv6.0 with the 2.2.4 kernel (thanks to an
article in PC Pro) on a PC that is connected to the internet and an Ethernet
LAN. But I have a few questions.
If the net work is set up like
_______ _______
| PC | | PC |
| | | |
|_win 9x | |_win 9x |
\ /
\ /
\_____/
| HUB|
|____|
|
__|___
linux PC
|______|------|modem|---phone line
Can I set up the linux machine to dial when instructed to do so from one of
the win 9x machines? If so can the linux machine keep a cache/proxy so that
pages already accessed will not need to be downloaded again.
Can Linux keep a log of who asked it to dial and the time of connection (as
we all pay our own part of the itemised phone bill) or better still keep a
log of the cost incurred.
Can both PCs surf the web at the same time, sharing the bandwidth of the one
modem?
How does IE5 tell Linux to make a connection / close a connection?
Can IE5 view files on a proxy with out issuing a dial command?
Can Outlook Express 5 send email to be left on the Linux machine and sent
next time a connection is made?
Can it tell the Linux machine to connect to send receive mail?
Can it do the same with requesting news / sending news?
Can the system be configured to down load different peoples mail, store it
on the Linux system and send it to the relevant machine next time they
switch
on. ie if person 1 connects, downloads mail for persons 1 & 2 can the linux
machine be configured to send person 2 their mail if they are live on the
LAN or if they are not switched on send it when the next boot up?
Can it be set up so that each user only gets sent their mail (more a matter
or privacy than security).
Can linux store requested news articles to be sent to Outlook Express so
that if both users subscribe to the same news group it only gets downloaded
once? If so can it be set up so that all users get to see all downloaded
news for the groups they are subscribed too. ie if one requests a post that
the other has they can both view it.
Can Outlook express cope with mail / news feed stored on a linux box across
an Ethernet?
The Linux machine will also have a CD writer. Can this be configured to
stop all other activities so as to prevent buffer under run.
Can whole sites be downloaded and stored on the proxy?
Should I run a GUI on the 'server', if so which?
Is all the software needed to do this likely to be on the SuSE CD, or can it
be found free on the net? (poor student - can afford to buy software).
The prime candidate for the linux machine is a Cyrix P200 mmx, 64MB ram (and
a few not too big hard drives). will this be up to the job?
Is Linux suitable for writing CDs intended for windows users, or should I
make the machine dual boot to win 98? If the dual boot option is better how
much hard disk space will the above Linux activities take (so as to maximise
the space available for burning in windows)?
It is possible to add a 486 DX2-50 to the network (no monitor, mouse or kbd
except when borrowed from another machine) would this cope with the above
internet activities? Could it handle the modem?
Thanks for any help on this long post.

Try this in your exports
/ *(insecure,rw)
I noticed the addition of the "*" in RedHat 6.0 exports. Maybe it's
always been there, but I have never used it before. I believe it has to
do with the new way that NFS is handled on Linux. RedHat 6.0 uses the
kernel NFS capability, istead of a user space application. I guess Linux
is trying to get the speed that FreeBSD and others have. Anyhow, it
means a slight change in exports syntax.

Subject: Diald, 2.2.x, and "Nonzero Exit Status..."
Date: Tue, 08 Jun 1999 15:18:38 GMT
Since I see lots of questions and few answers, let me offer what I
think I found in 2.1.x discussion threads:
2.2.x *disallows* references to 127.* IP#s on anything *other*
than "lo" loopback device.
It seems many diald configurations (I use S.u.S.E., but I see similar
questions in RedHat and Debian fora) use something like 127.0.0.2 and
127.0.0.3 for "local" and "remote" IP#s required by diald even when
IP#s are dynamically assigned during the ppp connection. *Some* of my
diald v. 2.2.x problems disappeared when I switched to IP#s in the
reserved-for-private-networks range (192.168.254.253 and
192.168.254.254 respectively).
Diald 0.99 comments (http://diald.unix.ch/download/CHANGES) suggest
that these entries have been made optional ... but I think that
requires a kernel with the 2.2.x "ethertap" device compiled into it.
Curiously, that option disappeared from my kernel options when I
upgraded my S.u.S.E. 6.1 with their 2.2.7 kernel RPM?!?
Please feel free to confirm *or* refute my understanding! In the
meantime, I hope it helps someone...BJ

Subject: Re: 3C509B NIC Problem...try this ....

Perhaps not quite _perfectly_
I have two linux boxes with identical 3c509b TP ISA cards
and the same vanilla (RH 4.2) kernel;
one (a 486) detects the NIC just fine and loads the 3c509 drivers.
On the other i've done the usual stuff, disabling PnP, using an
unused irq and i/o address and changing the bios
irq setting to "Legacy ISA". Windows 95 networking
works OK, but the NIC is not detected in linux.
I'd guess it's a BIOS difference.
So if I'd stopped at the first machine, I'd be in the
"works _perfectly_" camp. Anyone seen this and found a
solution ?
