Doesn't "-chap" mean the same as "refuse-chap"? In any case, I'd guess
you've got some options here that you don't need and should get rid of.
I suggest you work through Bill Unruh's "How to hook up PPP", an easy

Good luck.

Is it possible that the mother was used to command lines years ago,
and simply can't get the hang of GUIs (particularly the frequently
non-intuitive GUI of Windows)? That's how I read "pines for a
command-line interface".

GUIs are not automatically non-confusing, even to experienced users.

Hello,
I am using Samba to print from my Linux box to a shared WinNT printer.
When I tried to print something from KEdit to this printer using
'enscript -2rG',
the printing is very slow. It takes ages to print a page (more than one
minute per page to start printing)
As I observed the printer queue details on the NT machine, I saw the data
transfered from the Linux box to the printer on NT is at a very very slow
rate.
What could be the reason? Is there any way to speed up things?

Thanks.
Joshy.

I also have the 905B and I believe that there is a known problem with
the card getting detected. Are you sure that linux is getting the right
MAC address? When you reboot, are you seeing the address or are you
seeing FF:FF:FF:FF..? When I first gor my card, it seemed that
everything was working right up to the time I tried to get on the
network. The fix I use is to do a cold reboot (complete powerdown).
When it comes back, the card is detected correctly.

Just something to try.

True, though sendmail is a MTA, and quite common in commercial

read and write email or something to transport it from A to B ?

What were the "obvious" settings you used? Did they include

Yes. I used the IP address of our Proxy server, along with the port number

The process was equally simple for me when setting up my printer. Just
select the printer from a list, print a test page, and away we go.

> What about establish home network, configure Iomega drive, configure sound

My sound card setup was equally simple- a wizard-like program probed for
my card, found it, asked me to confirm settings for it, played a test, and
updated everything on its own.

> Take your example, X-win and MS win: why still over 90% users use MS win?

How about this answer- in the end user market, only 10% of the end users
are aware of the existence of X. It's called X, by the way. Not X-win or
Xwindows.

I work for a company that provides webmail software. I deal with users
all day long. Rougly 85% of the users that contact me are companies
running Linux. 10% run a different flavour of UNIX, generally Solaris. 5%
use NT. At my University, the entire shool is a heterogenous mess of
Netware, NT, and various Unices including IRIX, Solaris, Digital UNIX, and
Linux. According to your logic, the small companies buying our webmail
software (which is available for all Unices and for NT) should be
predominately NT users and my University (with the deep pockets) should be
predominately HP-UX of Solaris.

> Companies which cannot be afford for both cannot survive. Simple as this.

*stifling laughter* Right. Go tell that to my ISP. Go tell that to every
little business using Linux- there's a LOT of them. Go tell that to the
26% of NT admins in a recent poll that said they're looking at possible
Linux migration the next year.

*shrug* Say what you want. It's the small businesses that power the show.
My father's office is getting ready to experiment with Linux as a way to
use a non-Windows workstation capable of running around on the Internet
while also being able to plug into the local office network. It'll be a
mix of Linux and SCO over there soon.

The manager over there, my mother, is actually begging for Linux because
she pines for a command line interface. Windows is too confusing for her.

and the 'DOS Support' menu (under 'Propriety') says :

Hi,
I have had the same problem with kernel 2.2.9. My solution I already
posted before was:
I compiled the kernel with a sub-option for allowing NFS server. This
option is shown only with the "xconfig" of the kernel. For some reason,
with the menuconfig you will not see it.
Then after installation, I had to put a link entry in /etc/rc.d/rc6.d
for nfsd because it does not start in rc3.d.
This solved my problem.

Shells support a 'short form' for your home directory (as recorded
in /etc/passwd, I guess). This short form is the tilde character ('~').

If the shell sees ~/some.file, it will substitute your home directory
for the tilde, and look for /home/directory/some.file

It's analogous to $HOME

I am surprised that you have decided that 'su' is
not sufficient for your needs (for all intents and
purposes 'su -' places you as if you've telnetted
in as root... off hand I can't think of anything
that is different that matters. In any case - if
I remember correctly, if you delete the file
'shells' (this file specifies allowed shells for
root to login on) then access is permitted on any
shell. If you don't have a file 'shells' then it
may well be the file 'securettys' you need to
remove - it's a step away from looking up the
details - if you look at the man page for 'agetty'
or 'login' I think one of them has the information
you need.

Check out http://www.linuxtr.net

You need kernel 2.2.9 / pcmcia 3.0.10 to run token ring with the 2.2.x
kernels.

Subject: ISP - Dialup: Static IP Addr
Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 21:47:58 -0400

I'm looking for a recommendation for an ISP in the RTP, NC area that
will do dial up with a static ip address.

I'm currently using erols internet with RH5.2.
This has been reliable but erols does not have access #'s in NC.

Any advise is appreciated.
