Subject: Samba with NT workstation SP5

I am running Samba 2.0.0 on RedHat Linux 5.2. The client is a NT
workstation service pack 5.0. Everything seemed to be working fine
for a few weeks. Then when I started to access the linux server it started
to recognize me as the user "nobody" which is in the log below: Here's an
oddity on top of this when a different user logs into the network from that
NT machine then logs out, and I re-log back in, the linux server seems to
recognize my account again. But If I try rebooting or logging back in
without someone else logging in before me linux recognizes me as the user
nobody.

The users here are mapped from there NT accounts to their NIS accounts when
they access the server. I haven't changed any configuration on the server.
Below is the share for the volume that the machine is accessing and the
global configuration file along with it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Do you mean NetBIOS, or NetBEUI? I thought that you bound file sharing
to protocols that were in the components list in network properties.
NetBIOS can run over NetBEUI, IPX/SPX, or TCP/IP, unless I'm forgetting
about 95 with all this NT work I'm doing. If you had it enabled for
NetBEUI, it obviousally wouldn't work because I've never seen that as an
option for Linux, let alone seen it enabled. Later,

According to the IP MASQ HOWTO there are certain options you can compile
into the kernel. Is there a way for me to check which options are
compiled into the current kernel? I am about ready to read the kernel
HOWTO for more info, perhaps that has what I'm looking for?
TIA,

I'm running a linux( 2.2.5-15 from RedHat) news server
on a network with a number of SCO5.0.4 systems. I would
like it to keep time with the other systems on this
network. When I show the time with date, it appears they
are close - within a seconds or two, but when I run:
/usr/sbin/timedc clockdiff serman
time on serman.wse.com is 25042792 ms. ahead of time on
linuxman.wse.com
The hardware clock is set to the system clock time
The time difference is approximately the difference between
GMT and PDT which is what date shows to be the TZ on both my
Linux and SCO systems ...
Is this just an incompatability between Linux and SCO or
perhaps I missed something in the setup?

Subject: Laptop and Tulip drivers... [update]
Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 03:10:31 GMT
I have a Hitachi VisionBook Pro 7755, with built-in network card, the NIC is
HITACHI HIAE-80/100 PCI.
Redhat 6.0 incorrectly detects it as DEC21040 and someone advised me to
update the driver and recompile the kernel, which was done and the kernel
was also updated to the 2.2.9 version. The eth0 is started by the kernel
"OK", the problem is that the card is broadcasting for about 3-4 minutes
then quits and during this time the network isn't accessible.
Once it's done, pinging works on the card but not sending/receiving any
pockets. The obvious choice would be a bad NIC, but it works just fine under
NT. The network is configured properly, it's a rather simple network.
Does anyone have an idea, other than using a different card?
Thanks....

I would like to disable/kill/filter out ping packets into my linux
box. I know you can crash/lock basicly any box if you ping someone
with a really large packet. so how do I go about filtering out ping
packets? do I have to setup a firewall, or something else?
btw that is a dial-up connection, not a network connect to the

I have two questions to ask...
1. I have set up Redhat 6.0 on a Gateway computer and I am now trying
to setup the networking and having no luck. I was wondering if anyone
out there has successfully made a SMC EZ 10/100 PCI nic work with Redhat
6.0? I have tried using the smc-ultra, smc-ultra32, and wd modules with
no success. Every time I start up the machine or try and restart
networking I get the message "Delaying initialization of eth0" [FAILED]
2. I am setting up linux in a multiuser environment (University
computer labs) and need to setup user home directories. Because of the
insecure envrionment of the labs we don't want to use nfs. I am
wondering if there is a way to have amd or autofs mount a samba share as
the home directory for the user. I have successfully made smbmount work
in my environment, but I have not seen a way in the documentation of
automounting a samba share.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Routing Weirdness

I'm relatively new to linux, and have an odd problem:
I have two border routers, one to another siteand one default to
internet. The reoute table entries are :
192.0.2.0 194.73.58.171 255.255.255.0 UG 1500 0 0 eth0
for the other site and
0.0.0.0 194.73.58.1 0.0.0.0 UG 1500 0 0 eth0
for default. When I ping/traceroute a system on the other lan it works
fine, I deduce my linux setup is therefore OK. When I ping for example
www.redhat.com, I get no reply, and traceroute shows me stars. All my
other system - SCO, WinNT, Solaris, work fine and see both the other
site AND internet sites.
Anyone seen similar or got any ideas??
TIA

There was a reply that the latest version of the tulip driver will work for
the NDC SOHOware cards, but I've had no luck. I just downloaded the new
driver and tried it with no luck. Others have had problems as well
Other comments made by another user warned against hub speed, the setup I
bought came with 10/100 cards, and a 10Mbps hub. The 100 Mbps hub raised
the price of the kit by almost 80%. I didn't think it was worth it on my
little 2 node network.
The cards work fine under windows95/98, but so far they're a no-show under
linux.

Hello, I am still trying to get two Intel etherexpress cards working on my
machine. I am running RH5.2. I now have the following in my conf.modules:
alias eth0 eexpress
options io=0x300,0x310 irq=5,9
alias eth1 eexpress
Now when I run ifconfig on eth0 the following is EXACTLY what I get for output:
Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr 00:AA:00:DC:00:85
inet addr: 0.0.0.0 Bcast: 0.0.0.0 Mask: 0.0.0.0
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
collisions:0
Interrupt:5 Base address: 0x300
and when I run ifconfig on eth1 I simply get uknown interface. Now
obviously something is wrong with this.(the inet addr, Bcast, and Mask
should not all be 0's for starters.) I don't know what else to do. I have
set up things in /etc/sysconfig/network, /etc/networks, /etc/hosts. There
is obviously something I am missing. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
The most frustrating thing about this is that eth0 was working until I
started trying to get eth1 to work :)
Thanks agian,

PPP has to be up because your hosts file is corrupt, and no names can be
resolved using it.
That's a guess, mind.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.0.1 omega.[your.net.name] omega
I assume that you have omega in there because you also have an
unmentioned LAN NIC installed ... otherwise, of course, pppd needs to
set the host ip address on dialin. Simple way:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost omega

Hello,
Try to use nslookup command at the prompt when you are connected to the Net.
$ nslookup <http server name>
It could be that this server does not have an entry in DNS database.
You can try the to do the same with one of the popular servers (fe.:
www.yahoo.com)
Good luck!

Hello,
By looking at your winipcfg output and output of ifconfig I can tell that
your machines are on the different subnets.
DHCP assigned address for win95 is 192.168.200.1 and Linux box has
192.168.1.4...this looks very strange!
Can you include output of ifconfig and netstat -rn commands please.
Also using web browser to test connectivity is not very good idea, try using
ping to the address vs name, or traceroute.
Good luck!
