at boot up and before you login press
SHFT pgUp and scroll back to top, see if you can find a reference
there to 3c509 or some such (should give IRQ and mem address info).
If so then the kernel sees it and the prob lies in your
configuration(s).

do your netconf and make sure eth0 is set up

in the hosts section there should be at least one line
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain

in the interface section these two lines
lo 127.0.0.1 none yes active
eth0 <your IP address> none yes active ---your IP is
something like 192.168.0.1 or whatever you decide.

these are the line as they appear in xwindows network configurator

in the command line netconf program you basic host information should
be something along these lines.

Hostname <the name of your computer such as LinuxBox>
x Enabled
config mode (o) Manual
Primary name plus domain <LinuxBox or whatever>
IP address 192.1668.0.1 or whatever
netmask 255.255.255.0
Net device eth0
kernel module 3c509 <your NIC model>

This site has a step by step howto for complete setup of samba. steps
for both linux and the win machine. (and they really work <G>)
http://www.sfu.ca/~yzhang/linux/samba/index.html

g'Luk

if that is properly set you should be able to ping yourself 127.0.0.1

I figured out the problem. According to the man
page for "route", one needs to manually specify a
path to a gateway before specifying it as the
default gateway. I entered the following:

route add -net 144.91.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
dev eth0

and then the following command worked:

route add default gw 144.91.1.5

You might want to take particular note of the recent posting regarding
smbfs 'bug'. Seems that RH compiled the kernel with the '95 bugfix
enabled. Howwever they forgot to test that on NT/98 machines. if you
smbmount a NT/98 drive you trash the time stamp, and maybe other nasty
things. To correct this you must recompile kernel and NOT enable 95
bugfix, course that screws up 95 stuff. Can we all say Catch-22!

Yes ... Linux can do wonders but this is a tough one even for it 8)

Now I guess you received a message regarding duplicate packages ? If so,
nothing to worry here. Ping's ICMP packages are not sent using the TCP
protocol, so duplicates a./o. lost packages can occur, no problem though
if it happens always and on different days, say it is systematic I'd
like to know too.

It doesn't work under dos ... only with a dos program running in windows. If
you double click my computer>control panel>system then click the device
manager tab you will see your modem but above that you will see a device
called a modem enumerator. that takes your modem and steers the com/irq
settings to one that older dos programs can use. If windows isn't running
the system won't even see the modem.

This HOWTO is out of date. At least from 2.0.33 forward, this stuff has
been compiled into my RedHat (5.2) system image. The only thing that
*wasn't* fixed for masquerading is that IP forwarding wasn't turned on by
default. To make the stuff work, this must be ON, regardless of what some
of the other HOWTOs will tell you. To check that,
   # cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
should return 1, not 0.
You will need to alter the script /etc/rc.d/init.d/network (probably) to
make this happen every time you boot. This is also a good place to
put in a line invoking a script that sets up your firewalling and
masquerading
rules.

I would recommend a visit to http://ipmasq.cjb.net/ the IP Masquerade for
Linux site. There is a revised HOWTO that should show you how to do this
safely (ie, without creating some *other* security hole big enough to drive
a semi through).

Geez Bob is sounds like you have been around the block a couple times....

After reading your comment, I decided I better tag onto this post and maybe
get some help. I am getting frustrated as I have a brand new 256 DSL line
and I cant use it. You seem so knowledgable I am hoping you can point me in
the right direction so I can get this thing going :)

I am running the same Netgear cards you are talking about. I have a server
setup for a internet gateway. It is running Mandrake 5.3. I had a dial up
account and have been using it for the gateway with IP Masquerading, and it
worked great.

The new DSL line is in, and I have the router connected to USWest. When I
inserted NIC #2 the LAN went away. I removed the card and it came back. I
tried a 3 COM card and it still didn't work.

I am really not that knowledgable and am having a tuff time.

Any ideas why the second NIC stops the LAN. Even when it is not activated ?

Where can I go to find step by step info on how to get my Cisco 675 router
to run ?

Thanks

Rich

Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 17:15:14 GMT

Here the phone co. changes the tone if the line has some special
services to something that sounds like the busy tone, and as such is
recognized by the modem. I found that my modem uses X3 in the init
string to stop waiting for dial tone (X4 in normal conditions). You
can find out in window$ if you have it with dual boot using it's
drivers: in the advanced item of the modem properties activate
logging. This writes all the commands sent to the modem to a text file
in c:\windows\ (i don't remember the name, look in the help). Then
dial. Uncheck the "wait for dial tone" box, an redial. Then read the
log and compare the two init strings. You'll find the one for it.

Now, if you don't have the big bad os and the modem's manual don't
tell you how to do it, call the makers of the modem. Maybe they help
you out.

Hope this helps

I also am unable to access machines on the internet from my
Linux (RH 6.0) box.

The gateway is a Win98 box running WinProxy from Ositis. All
of the other WinDoze machines are able to access the net via
the proxy server and its connection to the internet. The Linux
box will talk to any of the machines on my LAN, via ping, telnet,
Samba shares, etc., but it just can't "see" anything on the
internet.

I've set the WinProxy box as the default gateway and the primary
DNS (it does that for the other WinDoze machines, too), but no
action ....

Any ideas? I can't get Netscape or any other app to talk to
anything outside my LAN.

Thanks in advance for any help ...
