I have three computers behind a linux firewall (RedHat 6.0) on a cable
modem. I have tried to play with IPCHAINS, but with no luck. I am
wondering if I have to use a special mod or what. Everytime I try to
connect to battlenet, I say that I am not processing UDP packets. If I
straight connect one of the Win 98 boxes to the cable modem, the game works
fine. Could someone please tell me how I can do this.

                Thanks, Sachiel

Can anybody reccomend a good PCI modem for Linux? I've been to fry's twice this

returned with a win modem. I'm looking for a 56K, any ideas or suggestions
would be helpful. I've looked at the compatability list at
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/19990613a.html, but i'm not sure if there are ones
that are easier to setup than others. BTW i'm running rh6

Hi. I am attempting to connect to my ISP by using the chat command, and I am
having no luck. Could someone offer me any suggestions?

I am using the command as follows:

chat '' ATZ OK ATDT5640322

Of course, if in the near future I get this much working, I will be adding
more to the command to do the logon, etc.

Now, when I execute the above command, the ATZ echos on my screen. Is this
normal? Then it just hangs. The modem does not attempt to dial.

Strange thing is I can connect to my ISP with no problems by using the
Minicom program.

I have a Motorola 56K VoiceSurfer modem.

Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,
I have Samba running on RH5.1 connecting to an NT server.
smbclient and smbmount work fine from Linux. I can print to the NT box

Any help would be appreciated with this problem:

chat dials fine, pppd connects. LCP Times out on the Config-Requests.

When I run pppstat a few times, I see that I am both sending and
recieving packets.

on the pppd options in my script, I tried setting the config-request
restart from the default 3 to 6 seconds, I tried passive and silent
modes. I don't know what to do.

When I dial from Windows, it connects fine with PPP with PAP and
TCP/IP. Also if I dial the same number from a terminal emulator, it
detects the terminal and drops me to shell. Could this be what is
happening? Does it think I am dialing in from a terminal? And why?

Thanks,

Justin

The Linux box has to participate in domain browsing to be visible to NT.
Check your configuration to make sure that Linux is browsable and in the
same domain as NT. Make sure that Linux is not setup as the domain master.
The man page gives details. It also helps to put the Linux box's IP in the
lmhost file. Look in c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc for it. There are
details in the lmhost file that tells you what you need.

that?

How do you suggest I mount the drive? Samba? smbclient?

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Bind 8 & Dial-on-Demand
Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 23:01:54 GMT

I am using a Linux box to provide dial-on-demand access
for my home network. I recently upgraded from RH51 to RH6
and have run into a small problem. I am running Bind on
the box so that my Win9X machines won't receive a timeout
while the link is coming up. In order to flush bind's name
cache, I do a restart on bind in the ip-down script. I have
to do the restart because if I ask for a cached name while the
link is down it will reply before the link comes up and the
client machine will be routed into never-never land.

With the old version of bind I just set it up as a forwarding
only nameserver. When I did the restart everthing worked
great. However, with Bind 8, it queries something on the
internet (root name servers?) whenever I do a restart, even
though it is configured as a forwarding only nameserver. This
causes my link to stay up (it gets restarted in ip-down and
brings the link back up).

I have patched it up by deleting all root server entries
in the named.ca file except one, and changing it
to 127.0.0.1. This way it just looks at itself and doesn't
bring the link up. Everything works fine this way, except I
get a good deal of complaining in the syslog.

Any ideas about a better way to do this? I basically need
a forwarding only nameserver that won't try to hit the net
when it is restarted.... or some other way of clearing bind's
cache... which I don't think can be done any other way.

They do, they just aren't in most user's PATH. Try using
'su - root' to pick up root's environment. Or set PATH in
your own .profile or .bashrc to to include /sbin and /usr/sbin.

Let me offer an alternative; stick your firewall into the wedge point.
Use a cross-over cable from the router to the firewall. Make the firewall
multihomed and put eth1 on the LAN side. The firewall then becomes the
default gateway for the LAN and you can use IP masquareding to get the
packet to the proper machine.

What???!!! That means you have to _give_root's_password_to_users_?!
You're kidding, right? Then what exaxtly stops your users to login
as root directly, since they already know root's password? Nah, this
can't be right ... my su asks the user's password, which makes more
sense IMHO. Giving out root's password (just _thinking_ of this gives
me the creeps! ;-) to change to root via su sort of invalidates the
purpose of su, doesn't it?

Here's what _my_ 'man suauth' says about this:

[ ... ]

The file is formatted like this, with lines starting with a # being
treated as comment lines and ignored;

    to-id:from-id:ACTION

[ ... ]

Action can be one only of the following currently supported options.

DENY The attempt to su is stopped before a password is
                        even asked for.

NOPASS The attempt to su is automatically successful; no
                        password is asked for.

OWNPASS For the su command to be successful, the user
must enter his or her own password. They are told
                        this.

[ ... ]

Again, think of it: you're giving root's password to a user (!) so
that the user can 'su' to root? 'su' is superfluous in this case,
as the user can already login as root directly anytime he likes,
without ever touching 'su'.
