Subject: DNS Problem
Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 23:58:51 +0200

Hi folks,
I seem to have a problem with my dns....
Since I changed the main-IP of the server, I get lots of error-messages in
my /var/log/messages - file.
the message is

server2 named [#PID]: sysquery: findns error (SERVFAIL) on *different
dns-names*

(I replaced the PID and the DNS-names at the end, as they change)

But, the nameserver is running and nslookup also works fine.
Has anybody an idea what I did wrong ?
Oh, BTW, I'm running SuSE-Linux 6.0.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA
Stephan

Here is more info:
No kernel recompile. One NIC is 3COM 3C509, the other is Intel EtherExpress.
It does not matter which card handles which network, I get the same
symptoms. One card is connected to a cable modem while the other is
connected to an internal network.

THanks,

Ron Cordell

It is really simple. Just run the program, lookup your ip number (the
accompanying program "x-utils" shows it to you), telnet to the linux
machine, defile export DISPLAY=<your ip number>:0.0, and run the x
program.
This is not the method the manual describes, but it works without any
problems.

Subject: Problem with RedHat 5.2 and Intel EtherExpress 16
Date: Sun, 13 Jun 1999 10:55:00 -0500

Hello all,

I've got a network card problem that maybe someone could help me with.
I've got an Intel EtherExpress 16 that will only work on the BNC interface.
I've set up RedHat 5.2 on an old 486/66 just to play with a bit. I've got
it installed. I've got the network card properly configured and I'm using
the eexpress driver. I've configured the card using Intel Softset to use
the 10BaseT interface. On boot, it detects the card, detects the interface
as 10baseT and all of the other parameters are correct. It refuses to work
on the 10BaseT interface. If I connect the card to my network on the BNC
connector, it works even though I've tried to tell it to use the 10BaseT
interface. There does not appear to be a supported ifconfig option for
media type with this driver as it returns an error when I issue "ifconfig
eth0 media 10baseT". I've looked in the Linux Ethernet How-To for help
already with no help there.

What am I missing? Thanks in advance to anyone that can be of assistance.

Hello:

Thanks for the input. Lights at both NIC cards are on (green). However,
during the ping attempts I do not observe any TX/RX light activity on either
card. The cards are Linux = EtherEZ (SMC), Win98 = AT-2000 PnP Series.
(10BaseT).

Thanks for the rescue attempt!

another suggestion: think about where you might want access on each floor
and run PVC pipe at least between floors, and perhaps between certain rooms.
Later, you can snake whatever you want easily....

One final alternative would be to see if there's an ntp client available
for Windows, and run either xntpd or ntpd on the linux machine. The
samba option is the only one which won't require any additional software
on the windows side, since Win9x has a "NetBIOS" time facility which
presumably samba supports.

I'm not sure, but I had some problems like this solved by changing
the way Win hands out passwords to the Linux machine. As I remember
Windows encrypts the passwords where Samba need TXT passes, or the other way
around... anyway, on your Windows cdrom should be a PTXT_ON.INF file.
After you install this the problem should be solved

Is there such a thing for Linux? Also, if I can get it done with

Exchange server runs ONLY on windows NT. As of the moment, there isn't
a single product that does everything that exchange does, but there are
a couple coming. Lotus is working on a Linux port of Notes, although
I'm not sure of a release date. You can get all of the functionality of
an exchange server from linux, it's just a bit more work to get all of
the different products working together. If you're more specific about
which services are getting used on your exchange server, we should be
able to point you in the right direction.

Is there a reason that you need to have it time out? ADSL is a full
time dedicated internet connection. You should be able to just have it
connect when you boot the linux box, and leave it running.

Two questions:

1. To which host's network file are you saying add the GATEWAY and
GATEWAYDEV entries to, the one for the gateway or the one for the host
that wants to use the gateway.

2. What are these entries? What do they do?

3. Could you please point me to a reference that explains the network

Thanks!
