Hi. I am trying to network via CSLIP (I think that is the best protocol
to use) two linux systems. One runs Redhat 5.2 , the other uses SuSE
5.3.
I have a null modem cable hooked to the parallel port on the redhat
box, and a serial port on the SuSE machine. I want to have both
computers just talk/ aka. ping as a first priority. Eventually I would
like both to be able to print via a printer on the SuSE box, and
connect to the internet via the modem on the Redhat box. I would also
like both systems to be able to share files. Right now I have nothing,
not even a ping gettings through. I am totally lost. I think I can
figure out everything if I just get them to talk. Could someone tell me
how to get them taking? Thanks.

In order to setup Kppp to see your modem device on ttyS1...you need to open
Kppp, then click on the SETUP button, next click on the Device tab and in
the first box (labeled as Modem Device) you need to enter /dev/ttyS1
...this will point Kppp to the correct device, since Kpppp defaults to
/dev/modem (a standard only supported in older Kernels and is being phased
out in favor of ttySx)...

You may also have to do this for each individual user...though I have not
checked this feature...

Hope this helps...

There are a number of them.

I have a list of some in my bookshelf page at...

http://www.its.stmarys-ca.edu/dedick

scroll down the the web email client section.

Another place to look is www.freshmeat.net. Just enter "web mail" in the
search box.

Not that I'd recommend it (we're working on replacing it at work), but
Netscape Messaging Server and Messenger Express are available for Linux
now.

The best place to find IMP users is the IMP mailing list.

I was about to jump in jubilation last night when
my Epson Stylus 600 started printing over Samba
in my Linux box. Tried to print the apache test page
of my linux box in my WIn95 client via Netscape.
It was succesful.
I tried to increase the resolution and again it
performed the job as I wanted it to and didn't
fail. I tried to print from MS word and I started to
believe this must be it. It was truly wonderful.
I don't know what have I done when the next time
I rebooted the WIN 95 and tried to print again,
Epson 600's spooler panel now complains:

"Failed to open file"

I tried to print from the command line in my linux
box with say, " $ cal 2000 |lpr " and I can see from
the Epson spooler that the standard input printing
has been queued and it sure prints.
I just can't think of anything wrong with my smb.conf
file because I was able to print earlier.
I checked the printer and it seems to be fine.
Anyone has had similar experience before?

I finally got my modem working and am currently trying to configure my
dial-up connection... I've played a little with the commands and have
dialed the isp but then nothing... is there a way to find out what the
script should say/do to establish and maintain the connection or is it a
matter of trial and error for different isp's.

any help would be greatly appreciated...tcn.

Hi! Thanks for reading this. I am trying to setup a Redhat 5.2 box
for an ISP. It supports several domain names and their accompanying
web sites on the same box. However, I also need to be able to make
accounts for the ISP customers, but keep the accounts from each domain
separate. The idea is to allow the same user ID to occur in each
domain without a conflict. I am assured that this can be done, but I
have no idea how.

Could some kind person please point me to a HOWTO or FAQ or other
article on this subject? Or even tell me what keyword I am searching
for.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Subject: Linux Win98 Networking Problems!! - Part2
Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 02:58:17 GMT

Hi guys,

I have a similiar problem :

I have 486 machine and pentium machine connected on LAN with hub.
When I use both machine as Win95 machines - no problem I have network.
When I use both machines as Linux boxes - I can ping to each other.

But problems come when I have 486 as Linux machine and Pentium as Win95
machine.
I can't ping to each other ( I can ping to itself on each of machines)

On Linux 486 machine in file /etc/hosts I have these 2 lines :

192.168.1.4 sarsoft.arnautovic.com sarsoft
192.168.1.6 sarsoft1.arnautovic.com sarsoft1

In file /etc/resolv.conf I have :

domain arnautovic.com
search arnautovic.com

In file /etc/rc/rc.inet1 I have :

IPADDR="192.168.1.4"
NETMASK="255.255.255.0"
NETWORK="192.168.1.0"
BROADCAST="192.168.1.255"

GATEWAY="192.168.1.4"

On win95 machine I have :

NetworkNeigboorhood / TCP/IP->network card

for : IP address : 192.168.1.6

Host : sarsoft1 Domain : arnautovic.com

DNS Server Search : 192.168.1.6
                                 192.168.1.4

Problem is Win95 setup but I don't where.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

for ftp-ing through a firewall, you have to use passive mode, as far as I know.
I am not sure if these modules do something to correct this or not.

Hope this helps,

Bottom line: it should work. But in reality, it depends on your local
service.

Most have DHCP that can be hard to get to work w/ RedHat 6.0 (even after
the pump fix). However, I am running RedHat 6.0 just fine with @home,
so I re-iterate it depends on where you are.

We have DHCP here, that assigns the same IP everytime. Therefore, I
fixed this by just configuring the eth device like it had a static
address and works perfectly.

Hope this helps.

I had a problem with diald when I was using it to serve a home
network. Every 15 minutes, to the second, my ms-windows machine would
send out some kind of DNS packet that would bring the link up. I
never did resolve the situation satisfactorily. Is this what you
have?

I was able to stop the packets by unbinding microsoft networking
services and clients from the tcp/ip protocol, but if you do that you
can't use samba to communicate with the windows machines...

Eventually I got an adsl connection, and now I bound microsoft
networking back to tcp/ip. I use samba now. I'm sure that the
packets are coming still, but now I don't care because I have a
full-time connection to the internet.

good luck.

I already was read some messages in this forum about the diald and the
dials "problem" (it isn't properly a problem...).

I have the same problem and I don't know how can I find the solution.

I already test without named, smb and sendmail and with the net cable
disconected but diald still dials every time.

I read that I can filter some net messages to solve the problem, but I
don't know how (I'm new in linux). How can I know what message I need
to filter and where I'll put these filters?

Thanks in advance!

I recompiled the SuSE Kernel from the CD ROM, to get modules
for the sound blaster installed.
I use my Win95 Partition / Turnpike software
to download ppp-2.3.8 tarball amd recompiled it, and installed it.

I can't if I did `make kernel', I think I probably followed
the INSTALL text file to letter, adn did it! But then again
not since I already recompiled the kernel when I did the sound.

Ok I will have a bash recompiling pppd again to
see if it make anydifference.
