Hi everyone,

I just read the man pages, FAQs and unfortunately I didn't see
anything that could solve my problem.

I have Redhat 6.0 installed at home and I intend to run a script on
my computer at work. My ~/.rhosts file is ok since I can do an rsh
without specifying a command without getting prompted for my password.
Now as I understand this, rsh without any command calls rlogin. So, of
course, the rlogin command also works without asking me for a password.

When I try to do an "rsh REMOTE_HOST ls", the rsh just sits there
and does nothing. I tried (it seems) all the possible agnuments of rsh
specified in the man pages without beeing able to solve my problem.

Another clue is that the reverse connection works. When I run on
the REMOTE_HOST the command "rsh MY_COMPUTER ls", it works!?!?!?

Any idea is welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Carl

I don't know about the timing out part but promiscuous mode means that
your ethernet card will receive ALL the packets on the local network.
Normally they only acknowledge packets addressed to the card. The most
obvious uses for this are packet-sniffing where you can sit and watch
all the lan traffic - watching for passwords sent as plain text perhaps?
Its what a network analyser does, to assist in diagnosing lan traffic
problems. With the right application you can filter the packets received
so that you maybe only see packets to or from a particular address.

I don't think it should do this by itself and perhaps this has something
to do with the major problem. I'm no expert on this and so the above is
not gospel, just a rough idea.

Ahhh, I *never* grant root access to users on my boxes. And I only have
root access on boxes where I am a trusted sysadmin. su exists on my
machine to provide a quick, easy way for me to get root access from a term
without having to switch to a vc.

Humm, I don't seem to have such a system on my boxen here. I can see how
an su system like this could be useful, but in situations where this could
prove useful I generally prefer to use ssh, but I'm paranoid like that ;)

Hi, If you can answer any of these questions, please do so. Thanks a
lot! Sorry if it's a lot. I have HPdj 697C, GS version 5.50,
printtool-3.29-3, printfilters-1.46-3, RH5.1

1) in the printtool I can have only 300x300 resolution with cdj550
filter. Is it possible to have 600dpi as my printer's spec supposedly
have for black&white? (I was told providing -r600x600 in gs command when
printing doesn't really do it!?)

2) what is the difference between cdj670 and cdj550 and why cdj670 is
not available with this latest (?)5.50 distribution of gs?

3) does having higher resolution mean spending more ink? if yes, than
is it 4 times more ink for 600x600 than for 300x300 resolutions?

4) at school on Unix I have in my .cshrc file:
alias lpe0 "/usr/local/bin/enscript -2r -fCourier8 -L58 -h -G -g
-pscriptfile.ps \!:1"
alias lpe "/usr/local/bin/enscript -fCourier8 -L75 -h -G -g
-pscriptfile.ps \!:1"
that help me to transfer _plain_ text to ps format with some convinient
details. Is anything like that available in Linux for plain text?
(printtool doesn't do it for the plain text)

5) What is CMY? CMY+K? CMYK?
Thanks! (in your reply add a copy to my [EMAIL PROTECTED], please if you
can.)

I've got RH6.0 Linux, kernel v. 2.2.9 on 486-33MHz EISA board.
It works as X-Terminal.

NIC starts as a module
3c507.c:v1.10 9/23/94 <cut>
eth0: 3c507 at 0x300, <cut>, IRQ 10, external xcvr, memory
0xd0000-0xd3fff.

and after some time (randomly) produces:

eth0: Rx unit stopped, status 5220, restarting.
eth0: Command unit stopped, status a000, restarting.
eth0: Rx unit stopped, status a000, restarting.
eth0: Rx unit stopped, status d220, restarting.

1. Is it a latest driver??
2. Is it a hardware problem? Works in DOS+Netware ;-).
3. Is it a RH6.0 problem? It worked with RH5.2! It is, now compiled
with egcs-2.91.66.
4. On cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov there is no info on 3c507.

Dear,

I am using pppd to acces my ISP and the Internet. It works fine.

Recently, I meet a problem as my company implements dial back policy to
every employees; everytime I initiate a connection at home, a dial back call
will be made from my company and form a connection with my PC at home.

Windows95's dialup networking is fine. However, my pppd at Linux can't
make a connection with my company access server, I believe no dial back can
be received by my Linux based on my current configuration of pppd. Does
anyone try it before, please let me know how to do that.

   Thanks a lot!

Hey guys,

Hope you can help on this one.... I have a Poweredge 1300/400 server
running RH6.0 Samba is configured mostly correctly... I say mostly
because of the error... I have it set up as share security. I am
networked to three Win 98 boxes. When I try to delete or rename a file
or directory from the client it gives me the "File services
error(1024)". When I try to create a directory it does make it but it
is named new folder... It doesn't give me dialog box to name it.
Finally any existing folders that are in the directory on the linux box
windows says they don't exist. on all shares the permissions are read
write to all. What should the masks be? 755 on both? Could this be my
problem??

Thanks in advance --Ron

Subject: linux and squid without caching
Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 16:20:20 GMT

Hi, Im looking for a good solution to bandwidth management in linux. I
am using 2.0.36 and traffic shaper seems to have problems when you are
talking about traffic over 200k/s. (this can possibly be addressed with
an exponential increase in system interrupts, anyone know?) Also,
upgrading kernels isnt an option.

I am looking at possibly using the latest squid because of its bandwidth
limiting abilties. However, i ONLY want it for its bandwidth limiting
abilities. I do not want to do any caching at all what so ever. Does
anyone have any thoughts on how to accomplish this? I want to make sure
and keep the overhead of running squid as low as possible and keep
things as transparent to the end users as possible. This is a machine
acting as a nat proxy, and i need to throttle certain ips/subnets behind
it.

Thanks!

I just wanted to chime in and agree, here. Run conduit...whatever you
run today will be old-hat in the future, so instead of having to settle
on one technology you just pull new wires whenever necessary.

Subject: ipchains or masquerade problem
Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 06:54:17 -0400

I am trying to set up Linux to act as a firewall for a network of
Windows95 & OS/2 machines. I have tried a number of configurations,
however, I am always getting the same result: I can log onto my ISP, get
the first web site and ping from the client machines and from the Linux
server. However, after moving to the 2nd or 3rd web site, the ppp
connection seems to freeze. I can not longer ping from any machine. The
LEDs on the modem usually indicate that messages are going out and
coming in.

I am not sure if my problem is with ipchains or masquerade. I have the
2.2.5-22 kernal and ipchains 1.3.9

Try reading
axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html
for how toset up and debug your ppp connection.

You can try 'netconf' and set the properties.

I just installed Red Hat 6.0 and am having trouble installing my
ethernet card. I have a unicom FEP-4206-EP 10/100 PCI ethernet card and
none of the drivers that the kernel supports works with autoprobe and my
computer will not detect the PCI card.I have a manufacture disk though,
that has a driver source file and and object file for linux red hat
5.2(Fe4206.c,Fe4206.o).I can not figure out for the life of me how to
install these drivers.Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I think in redhat (haven't tried it in about a year) you can do a netconf
@ the terminal. Or if you want, DNS = /etc/resolv.conf
Gateway (routing info) route.conf
IP = check your /etc/rc scripts.

Just to let you know, I am a SuSE user so RedHat may do somethings
differently.

Just to support my favorite distribution, this is not a SuSE problem, the
problem with with SMC and it's share memory address. Here is a link
http://www.linux-howto.com/LDP/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO-5.html#ss5.35
to give you info.

Some things to double check, disable all plug-n-pray in bios and card, and
if it as module, check your /etc/conf.modules to make sure you have the
correct settings.

Subject: PPP and looped back serial line
Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 16:23:03 +1000

G'day,

This is the output from /var/log/messages after I started up pppd (to connect
to my ISP):

Jun 15 11:05:45 vincent chat[371]: timeout set to 5 seconds
Jun 15 11:05:45 vincent chat[371]: send (AT&FM1^M)
Jun 15 11:05:45 vincent chat[371]: expect (OK)
Jun 15 11:05:45 vincent chat[371]: AT&FM1^M^M
Jun 15 11:05:45 vincent chat[371]: OK
Jun 15 11:05:45 vincent chat[371]: -- got it
Jun 15 11:05:45 vincent chat[371]: send (ATDT84250056^M)
Jun 15 11:05:45 vincent chat[371]: abort on (NO CARRIER)
Jun 15 11:05:45 vincent pppd[370]: Serial connection established.
Jun 15 11:05:45 vincent chat[371]: abort on (BUSY)
Jun 15 11:05:45 vincent chat[371]: abort on (NO DIALTONE)
Jun 15 11:05:45 vincent chat[371]: abort on (WAITING)
Jun 15 11:05:45 vincent chat[371]: timeout set to 45 seconds
Jun 15 11:05:46 vincent pppd[370]: Using interface ppp0
Jun 15 11:05:46 vincent pppd[370]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cua0
Jun 15 11:05:50 vincent pppd[370]: Serial line is looped back.
Jun 15 11:05:50 vincent pppd[370]: Connection terminated.
Jun 15 11:05:51 vincent pppd[370]: Exit.

It's a bit lengthy I know, but as you can see it says "Serial connection
established" before the number has been dialed! It then tells me that the
"serial line is looped back" after connecting ppp0 to /dev/cua0 (somehow). I
changed /dev/cua0 to ttyS0 after gpm produced an error message saying that the
"cua*" devices were obsolete, but no change.

I searched the PPP-Howto, the Serial-Howto, both sets of man pages, the far
left hand corner of my brain (which I never usually use) but I still couldn't
find anything...there are options (like lcp-max-something and -mn) for pppd,
but they are not relevant because I haven't connected to anything remotely as
yet...the "Off-hook" light flashes on for a second, then goes off - at the same
time as "Serial Connection established" appears in the log file.
I checked the serial ports using setserial against another machine which
currently does PPP to the same ISP - both the same. I am using the 2.2.9 kernel
on Redhat 5.2, on a 486 dx2/66, 16Mb Ram, 400 MB HD. I can't seem to find
anything that will tell me why it is "looped back", save to say that I'm
re-compiling the kernel with some "loop back" options turned off...

I have very little space left on the HD (about 10MB)...but nothing else is
being put on there, so I'm expecting the log files to chew that up slowly. I'm
in the process of upgrading to a larger HD, so that problem will go soon. Is
there anything that I really don't need, but RH5.2 installs as default??

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
-Spud.
