Move the ethernet card to different slot and it will be assigned a different
interrupt.

Let's see. It looks like 18 packets were successfully sent, but you never
received any packets back (successfully). I would suspect cabling.

I originally setup a 486DX-100 as a Linux router/gateway for my home
network. I upgraded it to a Cyrix 6x86L-133MHz and this improved
throughput on my cable modem. Then I upgraded it to a Cyrix 686M-333MHz
and I am getting download speeds of a T-1. The faster processor really
does help. Before that I was getting about 30 to 60 KBytes/sec (1/3
T-1).

Ok, here's a rather unusual question, maybe some
of you will get a kick out of. I want to know if it's
possible to have netscape be a primary mail client
while at the same time I can use pine, but they both
access the same mail files/directories? Does netscape
and pine have similar mail reading/storing
functionality?
The reason for this question is that I recently got a
cable modem at home and as anyone who knows
about cable modems would know, they do not allow
remote telnet access to check mail and such. Well,
since my machines are on all the time anyway, I figured
I could just telnet into my linux box and use pine when
I'm away from home and when I'm at home i could use
netscape mail client because i prefer that in X.
However, the dilemma exists of checking mail. I keep
many of my messages for a while and I want to be able
to store them all in the same location for both mail
clients to be able to use. So is this possible? And if it
is how would I go about doing it? Would it be just a
matter of setting up pine so it points to the same mail
directory as netscape mail does? And what possible
negative effects might this cause if any?
Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks.

Silly question I know but are you sure that com1 is disabled on your
motherboard ?
I've been using the same modem for years with no problem and no special setup.
Have a look at /proc/interrupts and see if anything else is grabbing irq4
(before you do setserial)..

I am having a problem with diald. It will dial, connect, and disconnect
after a few seconds, usually several times before keeping the
connection. according to the ISP, our machine is sending termination
requests. It has done this about 400 times in the last 16 days or so.
what could be causing this?

Subject: Help setting up Transparent Proxy/Firewall
Date: 17 Jun 1999 14:30:49 GMT
I am a newbie and have a very simple question. I have read the
ipchains-how-to, firewall-how-to. I have been asked to 'experiment' with
linux as a firewall/proxy on our NT domain network. I am using Redhat 6.0
The main requirements right now is to restrict certain websites and other
outgoing requests from certain users at our company. I think I understand
how to set up rules using IP chains, but first I want the NT and 95
workstations to go through the linux box so that the rules can be applied.
Is there a way to have the linux box just be on the LAN, not a seperate
network itself? Security from the outside world is not the main
objective, rather filtering. What do I need to do to get the MS
workstations to go through the linux box. Thanks for your help in advance.

What rules do I use to let ftp out of my lan but not let anyone ftp into
my site?
I think it might be this, but I don't want to accidently leave myself
open.
ipchains -A input -p ftp -s 0.0.0.0/32 21 -d 0.0.0.0/32 1024:65535 -j
ACCEPT
As I understand it, ftp originates at port 21 but comes in on any port
above 1023. By
opening these ports up, I assume no one can ftp to my site because I
don't have any accounts set up.
Is that a correct assumption?
I have this same thing for DNS(except ftp is replaced with udp). Is that
OK?
I am using RD6.0, ipchains, ip masq and ip forwarding. All seems to work
OK, I'm just
concerned about who can get in.
Also, what rule logs all denied packets?
Thanks for your help.

Dip uses pppd for PPP, I *think* pppd is saying that setting the modem

reason why and perhaps the usual pppd option file, /etc/ppp/options,
for anything that sets the device. Dip is probably handing off the
device name to pppd and it's already set elsewhere.
The Protocol-Reject are not important, it's something that pppd
can't do, but something not fatal. The modules likely need aliases.
The tty_notlocal I haven't seen before.

It isn't that pppd is rejecting PAP, it's that the ISP isn't receiving
pppd's messages or gets them in a scrambled form. Take a look at the
modem device file with setserial and check the UART type. That type
must agree with the UART that the modem actually uses. For example,
a 16550A UART needs to be configured that way, and not as a 16550 .

Subject: Newbie--RH5.2--make--Promise UDMA/66--PPP

Reply-To: "Communications Committee" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Whoa is me. I have had some success but many failures. I have purchased a
number of brighty colored manuals from large book store chains. I am
learning but slowly.
I have RH5.2 on an Abit BX6 mobo, 64 meg, Celeron 300a stable at 450mhz.
Promise UDMA/66 card WD 41800 18gig HD udma4 on primary master, 3 gig WD
udma2 on primary slave. Matrox Mellinia G200 AGP 8 megs. CDrom and HPRW on
mobo controller.
Used the Mini Howto to enable the drives on the Promise card by passing
(ide2=0xb000,0xb402 ide3=0xb800,0xbc02) to the kernel while booting off a
floppy. Then was able to install and am running Linux now using this method.
Am using 2.0.36-7 kernel but cannot get to any config to enable or patch to
recognize Promise card, hell I don't know enough to determine exactly what I
have to do to get it working so LILO will dual boot with win98. I dnlded
2.0.37 but when I use the make program I get
"`No targets. Stop.'
The former means that you didn't provide any targets to be built on the
command line, and make couldn't find any makefiles to read in. The latter
means that some makefile was found, but it didn't contain any default target
and none was given on the command line. GNU make has nothing to do in these
situations. "
Whats next.
I have got PPP to dial and logon to my provider but I cannot access any of
the web using ping or Netscape etc. Its like no DNS servers are configured
but as far as I can tell they are.
I have had some success, I fooled around for days trying to get the Matrox
card to work with X windows, then I managed to upgrade to the latest version
of X86 and finally that is working.
I used rpm to install and configure KDE it is working fine.
Any help and suggestions will be appreciated . I am going to install Linux
on the laptop I have an extra removable 2 gig hd I am going to use. It is a
Gateway LS2300.
Help Me Rhonda or anyone.

Subject: Can't FTP in as a user
Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 11:25:43 -0400
I have user accounts set up on my Linux box, but whenever I try to FTP
in, I get a login incorrect login failed. I can Telnet in with the same
account no problem. I can also ftp in as anonymous. Everything else
network wise seems to be working fine also. Samba is acting as a domain
server. Logging in through the Win98 boxes to a domain, file sharing is
fine. Just no FTP.
Any help as to where to look would be greatly appreciated.
And no I have not added the users to the ftpusers file in /etc. :)
Thanks.

Turn diald and pppd debug logging on to find out. Make sure
/etc/syslog.conf does actually put debug messages somewhere.
Some set ups just discard debug by default.
