I have a DE528 (I think that's the right model - if not, something very
similar).

I have had no problems with using the "PCI NE2000" generic driver in the
kernel (version 2.2.x).

I also have something like this - a netgear RH348. Very easy to set up,
has 4 lan ports, can be configured to use two-channels when traffic hits
one level and drop back to one later. Can have filters set up like a
firewall. Also does dhcp + NAT. To my mind it really is plug'n'play -
you need to do almost nothing on the clients, just set the default
gateway to the router and away.

I don't work for Bay I'm a happy customer, and I'm afraid I can't offer
a comparison with say the 3com above.

standard (stated in books) maximum's length for a BNC cable should be 185
meter ...
iinm, you can go beyond there.. just get a network cable tester and make
sure there's no package lost during transaction ..

Subject: [Q] AOL Using Linux?

To Linux Netters,

Currently, I am an NT user and my access to the Internet is provided by the
NetZero (www.NetZero.net) that does not allow its member to use any other
DUN,
except its own proprietary DUN software. I also noticed from the NetZero's
web page that one can use AOL DUN to access the Netzero's Internet dialup.
Having said that, I would like to find out if it is possible to setup a
Linux
workstation to perform and Internet dialup to the AOL or the NetZero using
the
Linux software. If so, I would like to get rid off my NT OS and replace it
with RedHat 6.0 Linux distribution.

Can anyone please help?

The syntax for this version of smbmount is something like (from memory):

smbmount //BUBBA/D/ -c 'mount /mnt'

You need an up to date manual page for this version, which is quite
different to the old smbmount

Add the following lines to /etc/conf.modules

alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate

That will take care of the problems.

You may need to add "file and printer sharing for Microsoft networks".

In the control panel go to network; add; service; microsoft; File and
printer sharing for Microsoft Networks.

Isn't there a how-to on your distribution CD? WWW-HOWTO or Intranet
HOWTO? You might take a look at 'The Linux Network' I'm sorry don't have
it here to quote isbn etc. I think it covers apache and it is quite good
for getting standard networking stuff up & running, though really aimed
at a private lan rather than the internet.

Is it possible to use a linux Redhat 6.0 box that
is currently connected and accessible on our NT

are on the same LAN? We have a T1 connection to

to be pointed to router gateway and the other
workstations pointed to the linux box. What steps
do I need to follow. Thanks in advance.

Not really enough information except for wild guesses. You really need
to find the pppd debug messages, usually in a log file in /var/log but
configured in /etc/syslog.conf.

One wild guess from the timestamps would be that CHAP authentication
failed for some reason. You need the pppd "name" option, e.g.,
name YourISPusername and a /etc/ppp/chap-secrets file configured this
way

YourISPusername * YourISPpassword

I have a Linux box connected to the internet via a modem and a W95 box
connected to the Linux box via TCP/IP.

2 questions:

1. Once the Linux box is connected to my ISP , I can go to the W95 box,
Telnet into the Linux box, run LYNX and get text only access to the
Internet. Is it possible to use Netscape or Explorer on the W95 box so
that graphical browsing is available?(I have spent many nights playing
with SAMBA and trying to understand IP_Masquerade but I can not get
beyond the point I described above).

2. My Linux box shows up in Network Neighbourhood on the W95 box and I
can browse it from there with no problem. How do I access files on the
W95 box from the Linux box?I presume that this would be done by mounting
the remote system's drives in some way but I am lost with this one.

Thanks in advance.

ANother issue is the ppp options and chat scripts you are using. If they
don't search for the right thing, or don't send an extra <cr> or two,
both sides can hang assuming the other is about to send something.

Also, some ISP's can't handle LCP request, and PPP prefers them. You may
see an error message like "LCP request timeout" in your messages file.
Try opening a second window, and as root run tail -f /var/log/messages.
Then open the ppp attempt and see what gets sent to the messages file.

ciao!

Hi All,

I've got the same problems. I'm able to dial into my ISP via
Minicom(which is really slow, even with a 56K modem),it seems to resolve
the connection but after 2 minutes it hangs up!

I've noticed that under my Network Configurator settings that my ppp0
interface won't stay set to ACTIVE! It continues to defalult back to
deactive whenever I close my Netcofigurator Window.

BTW, I have read the PPP HOWTO under /DOCS and have been referencing 2
other linux books.

Let's talk about it,

A couple of questions:

1) What is /dev/st0 ? Is it a port back to the machine you issued the command
from?

2) Suppose you want to use cron to do this every night. Since cron presumably
isn't privy to your ssh-agent login (if you happen to be logged in at all), how
do you manage the passphrase in a cron job?

Sorry, *all* ISPs "handle LCP request", PPP can't do data transfer until
the PPP link is negotiated. Link negotiation requires Link Control
Protocol, aka LCP.

I am attempting to get a test Linux system hooked up to our working Novell
server.

It is a SuSE 6.1 with 2.2.5 kernel. The network card is a 3com 3c509B which
works fine from dos and windows. From a Win95 workstation on the network I
can ping, telnet and ftp to the linux box.

However as soon as I try to start the IPX interface I get a segmentation
fault. The command I am using to start the interface is :

ipx_interface add -p eth0 802.2

When I first attempted this I got a message something like socket
unavailable.
Being new to this I looked through the various howtos and it seemed that
the ipx module was not being loaded. I then edited the conf.modules file
and uncommented the line

alias net-pf-4 ipx

Which I take should allow the loading of the ipx module. But now with these
segmentation faults I'm not certain this was correct.

If anybody could give me any pointers I would be most grateful. Thanks in
advance.
