Subject: ppp problems
Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 17:41:45 GMT

I'm trying to get ppp going to an ISP that is
running an NT 3.5 server. it looks like everything
is connecting however I can not ping the server or
anything other than my local machine. looking at
the modem lights I see them flicker when trying to
ping but I never get anything back. the only
obvious error is a CCP time out (I tried to fix
this with the noccp option but then I get unknown
protocol errors). attached are the results form
ifconfig, netstat and the relevant part of
/var/log/messages. any insights would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks to all for responses.

Culprit: An rpm had inserted in services.
ftp-data 20 - above the ftp 21 line.

All connections in and out were using port 20 to attempt connections. Each
time I checked the services file I ignored this because the ftp line was
accurate - not realizing the system was grabbing the first "ftp" starting
string it found.

Hi All,

I am looking into starting a small ISP and having users dial up my
machine and accessing the Internet via Proxy Server (so I can assign IP
numbers on my private network and not have to pay for them)
Is there any information available to get me started?

Thanks in advance.

ALright I give it try

Many thanks

But does it have be 2.2.7 from SuSE ? 14.5 MB on 33.6 DUN Line
is gonna be mighty slooooowwwwww.
Surely it should work with standard kernel from kernel.org.

and no thanks to SuSE Support

Subject: multi-smtp + multi-pop email client?
Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 17:47:18 GMT

I'm wondering if anyone knows of an email client available for Linux
that will allow me both multiple POP accounts (for checking) and
multiple SMTP accounts (for sending). IE5's Outlook Express will do it,
but I want to move away from windows..

Obviously by my question, I have several different accounts that I must
send and receive from....having a different app for each account would
be (is) a pain, and I'm not proficient enough with email in general to
go through the process of setting up an MTA and MDA....much less how to
tie an MUA to all of that.

links, tips, & suggestions greatly appreciated!

You probably haven't specified your isp's domain name servers.

the syntax might be wrong but get the ip addresses of their dns -
usually two - primary and secondary but one will do.
then add these to resolv.conf

nameserver xxx.yyy.zzz.aaa

Hi ppls

I'm having major hassles getting to the net to play Quake3 test.

I have a P133 running RH 5.2 with IP-masquerading setup. All the
ipchains rules are right. The modules are loaded (inc. ip_masq_quake)
etc.

When trying to play Quake 3 outside the LAN on a server eg. 196.7.0.142
it doesn't connect. The packets seem to travel to the server, but when
it's returned it's not accepted. All other services work fine eg. ftp /
dns / irc / http.

Heeellppp....
Thanx
Pieter

Subject: 3Com Unknown Adaptor

I have a 3Com PCI Fast Ethernet adaptor that I have been unable to
identify. The diagnostic programs for the 3c590 and 3c900 cards at
http://cesdis1.csfc.nasa.gov/linux/diag fail to recognize it.

/proc/pci reports it as:
Ethernet controller: 3Com Unknown device (rev 48).
      Vendor id=10b7. Device id=7646.
Medium devsel. IRQ 10. Master Capable. Latency=64. Min
Gnt=10.Max Lat=10.
      I/O at 0xe400.
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xea000000.

The box says 3Com OfficeConnect Fast Ethernet Network Interface Card
model no. 3CSOHO100-TX

Any assistance identifying this card is appreciated.
