You will want to look at ipchains. The stock RH 6.0 supports it (i.e.
no kernel recompile required). Look at this part of the IP Masquerade

XFree86 is an implementation of XWindows for Intel processors. If you

I have a small LAN at home witht he primary file server running Windows
NT, 4 client W98 machines and 2 linux servers, one running RH 5.1 the
other i've just installed RH 6.0. I have a WYSE 150 terminal laying
around that i'd like to get hooked up. My question is, do I need to be
running some type of terminal server software on one of the linux
machines?? and if so if i could get a location, or at least a name to
get me headed in the right direction. Also another question. Right now
my NT box is running Proxy 2.0. I'd like to use Linux as my proxy
server. I've heard alot of talk about IP Masquerade, but haven't been
able to actually locate the source. Can anyone point me in the right
direction. I"ve heard 6.0 comes with it, but i can't seem to find it.

Well, I'm not sure if they are available. I am using a Windows box to
create
the web site with HotMetal Pro. I don't know if a WYSIWYG editor in Linux.
As for Internet Explorer, I don't know if there is one for Linux, but there
is one
for Solaris. I use Netscape on Linux, but this web site (like most out
there)
will be accessed from Windows machines, as well as UNIX-based
machines. I need to make sure it works for all systems and browsers.

MS has a history of releasing new versions of dos and windows that breaks
the current release of their main competitors. It was especially bad with

In my mind, yes. They created a 'feature' that has brought IS departments
using Office to their knees. This started with the tame but annoying word
macro virus and has now gotten quite dangerous.

Unix certainly has had its troubles, especially with sendmail. But at
this point, most of the issues have been resolved. Open source code and
20 years of release time have been helpful. Meanwhile, Windows and NT
have been used for networking for but a few years and it's pretty clear
that this is going to continue for quite some time. MS won't get sued
over it, they'll make a killing selling fixes instead. Or perhaps people
will start to realize the costs and move on.

Hi,
I have a situation which I haven't been able to find in the
newsgroups listings, so if this is a repeat, please excuse.
I have two computers with generic (cheap) networking cards in them.
One is my primary machine running Win95, and the other I am trying to
configure as a Linux server. I am using a "cross" cable to link allow
the computers to talk, which works great with my primary Win95 machine
and any other Win95 machine.
However, when I connect my Linux machine to my Win95 machine, they do
not see each other via PING.
I suspect my eth0 configuration on the Linux machine is bad, because
I've had one heck of a time getting it to recognize the card. The card
is NE2000 compatible, and at least appears to be working.
I have assigned eth0 the ip address of 10.1.1.100(255.0.0.0), and can
ping that address from a linux prompt.
My Win95 machine has an ip of 10.1.1.1(255.0.0.0).
Ping times out when I try to ping from either machine. When I try to
traceroute from the Linux machine, I immediately get back:
traceroute to 10.1.1.1 (10.1.1.1), 30 hops max, 40 bytes packets
1 host (10.1.1.100) 0.414 ms !H 0.315 ms !H 0.275 ms !H
My Linux routing table looks like:
DEST GATEWAY GENMASK FLAGS METRIC REF USE IFACE
127.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 4 lo
10.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 5 eth0

I accidently removed the original "default" route, but it didn't work
anyway.
If anyone has any ideas, I would sure appreciate hearing them.

I am using RedHat 6.0, I found a annoying samba problem:
in samba faq, I found a problem that Windows machine can not see
changes
on linux samba file, but I have an opposite problem: samba client can
not see
changes on files in NT box:
- use smbmount mounts NT directroy on Linux box.
- create a file on a NT box
- view the file on a Linux box
- change the file on the NT box
- look at the file again on the Linux via Samba and the changes are not
visible
did anyone encounter this problem and how to resolve the problem?
Any help will be apprecicated,

There is one more thing, but I'm not sure if it is important.
I am using the VirtualHost directive in httpd.conf. It seems
that all of the web sites on the server are not happy with
Netscape, or vice-versa.

told a upgrade to the 2.2.5 kernel dont need the 'movepci'

As I dont know what model you use, i dont know what a F10 during

You're correct. I'm running SuSE 6.1 with Kernel 2.2.10. There is indeed
support for the card there. However, I'll be damned if I can get the network
running. Using Yast I can config the card, but within the network section
DHCP is disabled. Andara (my cable modem supplier) runs a DHCP server. I
also have an error the eth0eth0 (yep, there twice in the error message) is
unsupported by this card. I've checked rc.config and there is only on eth0
entry within it. I'm doing something wrong, I just don't quite know what.

Me, too. Apparently what happens is that the remote end is attempting
to authenticate your user further. But according to the governing RFCs, no
one is supposed to accept the data from such a query-response pair as
gospel,
so this is actually idle chit-chat between the remote server and your
machine;
the returned info identifies the user (on your machine) of the TCP socket.
Most
of us have this configured so that no useful info is given out. So, to make
a
long story short, ignore the messages until you get so tired of them that
you
figure out how to configure syslog to put them somewhere else (like
/dev/null).

Is your firewall denying the output back to the ident requestor? You might
do the trick I do here, to add a line at the end of your input and output
rules
that allows everything TCP flavored, but logs it in syslog; then run xchat,
or
whatever, see if it works, and then remove the logging rule, to get the
security back.
Perusal of the log afterwards will tell you what was needed but not handled
by
your "normal" firewall rules.
