i'm running squid on REDHAT 5.2 for my LAN and anyone on the LAN can access
internet through my linux box. I tried access lists but they can provide
only ip address restriction which is not adequate. Can anyone tell me how to
configure squid so that users should give passwords before they can access
internet through this proxy server.
I ve heard about an encrypted password file generated as in apache web
server. I've searched the official squid site.
Please help me!!

In order for one to legally use a service pack or a patch from Microsoft they
must have purchased a Windows license. So it costs me money to use those
patches, therefor one could say they are not free. Just like IE, you must
legally have Windows to use it. $$
So an opensource patch is free, a Microsoft patch is not. Its a stretch, I
know.

Hi,
I have recently added Red Hat 5.2 to an NT 4 network using tcp/ip. This
linux machine is able to ping all the machines on the LAN, except for
the NT 4 Server (which is also the gateway to the internet). The weird
thing is that the NT Server can ping the linux machine no problem!!
I have noticed that the linux machine seems to have added an entry in
the routing table of the NT Server. When this entry is removed and the
server rebooted, the linux machine will be able to ping the NT svr and
the internet no problem, but afterwards the entry reappears in the
routing table of the NT server and I am back to the same problem.
Help PLEASE!!!

Kind Regards,
Matthew Boyce.

That part right there sounds suspicious.
Just because you can plug these computers back to back does not mean
it will work this way.
You either need a hub, or a crossover cable. You mentioned
neither, but I appologise in advance if you had already
knew this but forgot to mention it.

i have a mac w/ system 7.5.1.
i have a box w/ linux 6.0
i have set up ipchains successfully on the linux box allowing other
machines ( win 95 and linux)to access the internet. i want to set up
the mac the same way.
i did get it working once, but soon netscape on the mac machine froze
up.
before i got i working this one time, i could not ping the mac box at
all. i could ping localhost, my hostname, my ip on my local network, my
local network number, and local network broadcast ip.
the bottom line is, i'm really not sure what i did, if anything, to get
the mac to work using ip chains. after the mac froze, i rebooted the
mac, and again, the linux box couldn't see the mac machine.
i did try different settings on the mac machine in mactcp, and in the
chooser; i tried w/ appletalk on and off. in mactcp, i tried the
ethernet and ethertalk settings, no luck.
anyway, if this makes any sense to someone, i sure would appreciate some
enlightenment.
thanks in advance,

No, in Under Normal Conditions you wont loose any thing. BUT there must
be a free disk partition
to install Linux. All the info on "this partition" will be lost since
the dos file system will be replaced by
ext2 file system. Other partitions will remain fat16/32.
> Is Linux installed on TOP of Windows 98?
No Linux must be installed on a different disk or partition. But you can
also install it as UMSDOS file system
which i do not recommend for stability and performance.
>
> Can I access Windows 98 from the Linux mode?
Yes it is easy. This connectivity is done within Linux setup, as well as
you can do it later.
>
> Can I access my internet browser (Netscape) if
> I'm in Linux mode?
First of all Linux is not a mode. It is an operating system 'like'
windows. ('Like' here do not refer windows's instability,
low performance, damn blue screens, and reboots for every key pressed.)
DO NOT think that Linux is like a Dos Prompt
run under windows in a window.
You can use Netscape of course. But this will be the Netscape which will
be installed during setup of Linux.
When you finished setup you will have an Operating System with full of
programs which you dont need to pay
like Linux, Corel WordPerfect, KDE, GNOME, file managers some games,
compilers etc.
When u finished installation the blue screened box will become an ftp
server, a mail server, and what ever you think
of becoming online. Ah by the way the Normat Conditions here means that
you have right hardware for Linux.
For example a real modem. Most of the PCI modems are winmodems and do
not work under linux which can easily be understood from
their name : WinModem!

With the right modem of course!

Remember that backing up your docs is HIGHLY recommended by most Linux
gurus before going into the linux installation.
And finally, Linux is not for everyone! I mean it.
It does not need any basic skills but needs some curiosity, maybe
hardwork to work a piece of harware, healty eyes to read
pages of howtos and manual pages. But you ll see that the temp.
operating system will become the windows. ;)

Do an ifconfig -a and make sure the inet addr is what the ppp protocol
allocated to you, and *not* the ip address of eth0 (or whatever).
ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
inet addr:158.86.1.89 P-t-P:158.86.1.250
Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:42 errors:1 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:1
TX packets:54 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:10
If it is the IP address of your local interface, the pass noipdefault to
pppd.
Cheers, Mark.

( win98 and winnt encrypts passwords, you have to allow

this sounds as if the user you're using under win cant access these

i use samba2.03, and there is a pretty good step by step debugging

Art,
Start here: http://metalab.unc.edu/linux/
Look for: http://metalab.unc.edu/linux/LDP/nag/nag.html
Or this: http://metalab.unc.edu/linux/HOWTO/NET-3-HOWTO.html
nag is the Network Administrators Guide. Very complete.
The NET-3-HOWTO has answers to 99.99% of all TCP/IP questions.

hey.... actually i have solved the problem!!!
my NIC had been in PnP mode... as soon as I disabled that, it worked
fine! well at least when i tested it directly to the cable modem.
but that's quite a milestone for me.

Sure... let's see -- Appletalk makes no difference here, since we're
dealing with TCP/IP traffic. You want to manually set your IP address
(in either MacTCP or the TCP/IP control panels), and then set your
gateway address to the internal ip address of your linux machine, your
subnet mask to the same as you have your win98 machines, and dns the
same as well. This is much simpler (and more reliable) with Open
Transport, which was introduced in System 7.5.3. The update is free
and available from http://www.apple.com.
Hope this helps!

Should be exactly the same, we run a Linux Gateway for both NT4 and 9x PC's.
Basically as long as the gateway is set to forward IP and it is nomiated as
the default gateway on the NT / 9x PC's there should be no problem.
Shouldn't need to use lmhosts is you are using IP addresses, and I'm
assuming that DNS will pass through the Gateway / Firewall anyway.
